Coming soon to a theater near you (ifa judge agrees): afull-length motion picture filled with footage ofMichael Jackson'slast rehearsals.
The movie would comewith all theelements of a major studio release: product tie-ins,merchandising andeven a director's cut and special editions.
Butthat's only if a Los Angeles probate judge approves the deal byMonday. The judge has scheduled a hearing for Monday to see ifJackson'smother, Katherine, has any objections.
Aredactedagreement filed on Friday and released on Tuesday details thefilmproject. The agreement is between concert promoter AEG Live, oneofJackson's companies, Columbia Pictures and others.
Itwas part of more than 500 pages of documents related toJackson'sestate case filed since Friday that were made publiclyavailable onTuesday.
Last month, AEG President and CEORandyPhillips revealed that the company had more than 100 hours offootageof preparations for Jackson's series of 50 comeback concertsscheduledfor London's O2 Arena.
He predicted the dealcouldgenerate much-needed money for Jackson's debt-ridden estate.Theproposed contract offers a glimpse at the possible film. Some ofthefootage that could be used would be clips meant to be broadcastduringJackson's shows.
"If we all do our jobs right, wecould probably raise hundreds of millions of dollars just on thestuffwe have worldwide and then the estate could eradicate itsdebt,"Phillips said in early July.
The contract states Columbia Pictures paid $60 million for rights to the project.
Thedeal was negotiated by two men who are administeringJackson's estate, longtime attorney John Branca and music executive andJackson familyfriend John McClain.
It calls forJackson's companyto receive 90 percent of the film's profits, with theremainder goingto AEG Live. Jackson's stake would move into a privatetrust the singerordered established, of which his mother and threechildren are slatedto receive a combined 80 percent share. Theremainder is designated forunspecified charities.
Thecontract notes thatBranca and McClain may produce one or more tributeconcerts to the Kingof Pop, and sets out terms so that its broadcastdoesn't conflict withthe film. The contract doesn't state whichnetwork, if any, has beenselected to air the tribute. A possible datefor the concert's airinghas been redacted.
If itscreation is approved, themovie will have to meet the standards for a PGrating and not run anylonger than 150 minutes, the contract states.
Italso states that the movie can't include any footage thatis consideredto paint Jackson in a bad light. The contract also allowsColumbia towork with companies on promotional tie-ins for the films, but even thathas limits. Prohibited tie-in products include "alcohol, cleaningproducts, firearms, gambling, personal hygieneproducts, pharmaceuticals," as well as those with religious, politicalor tobaccoties.
Jackson's company would be also be abletoblock the creation of a new product marketing the film - the exampleofa "happy meal toy" is given - according to the contract.
Thedeadline for the judge's approval isn't the only tight timelinetheproject faces. According to the contract, Columbia must screenthemovie for Jackson's representatives no later than Oct. 2.
