IPOH: A former security guard has been sentenced to death for killing a Perak Veterinary Services Department deputy director here. Syahmie Hassan, 24, appeared calm when High Court Judicial Commissioner Datuk Che Mohd Ruziman Ghazali announced the judgement and ordered the accused to be hanged to death. Justice Che Mohd Ruziman said the deputy public prosecutor had proved a prima facie case that the accused had killed Dr Rohani Kasim, 38, at her apartment in August 2011. Justice Che Mohd Ruziman said Syahmie had first broken into Dr Rohani's apartment to with the intention to burgle her. "Failing to find any valuables, the accused waited for Dr Rohani to return home. "After a brief struggle, Dr Rohani bit the accused's finger. He then pushed her, causing the deceased to knock her head on a table," he said. "Finding that she was still alive, the accused proceeded to strangle the deceased until she stopped breathing," he added. Dr Rohani was found murdered at the Permai Lake View Apartment on August 3, 2011 between 6pm and 7.30pm. The accused and several others wrapped her body in a comforter and carrying her to the ground floor when they were spotted by security guards.
