Just hours after Ford’s public announcement of the facts and figures on the new 2013 Ford Shelby GT 500 Mustang – a staggering 650 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, and a top speed of 200 miles per hour, Chevrolet has countered with numbers of its own for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

The previously-announced 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft produced by the Camaro ZL1’s LSA supercharged V-8 helps the boosted pony to deliver 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, the quarter-mile in 12 seconds flat, and a top speed of 184 miles per hour. This, for the bargain price of $54,995, including a $900 delivery fee. Pricing has not yet been announced for the GT 500.

Chevrolet is quick to point out that the ZL1 compares favorably to exotics costing more than double or triple the price, including the Audi R8 GT, Maserati GranTurismo, and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

Among some of the hardware and technology enabling the ZL1 to deliver those formidable numbers are the third-generation of the Magnetic Ride suspension technology, which employs valveless damping and Magneto-Rheological fluid technology to quickly vary the damping firmness to match driving conditions. Performance Traction Management, which debuted on the Corvette ZR1, also makes an encore appearance on the ZL1, integrating Magnetic Ride, launch control, electronic stability control and electric power steering response to enhance overall performance. Launch control is available only on manual-transmission models. A six-speed automatic transmission is a $1,185 option.

Similar to the Cadillac CTS-V, the automatic model is slightly quicker than the manual, clocking a 0-60 run a tenth under the magic four second mark. Maximum lateral acceleration for both models is claimed at 1.0 g.

The ZL1 will be equipped standard with front heated, power-adjustable leather seats with suede microfiber inserts, a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system, and USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and rear-park assist with a rear-view camera integrated into the center rear-view mirror. A suede package that also applies the material to the steering wheel, shift knob, and shift boot, is a $500 option.

The ZL1 coupe will go on sale in spring 2012 as a 2012 model, with the convertible going on sale in summer 2012 as a 2013 model.
