SEA Games great Ballang Lasung dies
By : Sulok Tawie
KUCHING, Tues:
Former javelin SEA Games gold medalist Ballang Lasung died about 8.45am yesterday at the Sarawak General Hospital after suffering from Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a disorder in which parts of the nervous system degenerate. He was 57.
His wife Susanna Lasung said Ballang developed high fever on Monday and when his conditions deteriorated, he was rushed to the SGH.
A funeral service will be held at the Kuching Evangelical Church on Friday morning, after which he will be buried at the Sidang Injil Borneo cemetery at Km17 Kuching-Serian Road.
Ballang had displayed symptoms of the disease in 2001.
Another great Malaysian sports personality who suffered the same ailment was the late Mokhtar Dahari. It is estimated that MSA occurs in two to 15 people per 100,000 around the globe.
Many individuals with multiple system atrophy first notice urinary incontinence among women, or erectile dysfunction among men.
Ballang started his javelin career in 1968 while studying at Lawas.
Ten years later, he created javelin history in the state with a 72.44-metre throw at the national athletics championship in Terengganu.
He won silvers at the Sea Games in Singapore in 1973 and Bangkok in 1975.
Ballang bettered his rivals by winning gold medals in the Sea Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1977, Jakarta in 1979, Manila in 1981 and Singapore in 1983.
He retired from competition soon after, but remained active in social golf and tennis, until the disease struck.
