My indulgence of the month.
1.Tamerlane: Sword of Islam, Conqueror of the World by Justin Marozzi.
Tamerlane (1336-1405)-the tartar successor to Genghis Khan-ranks with Alexander the Great as one of the world抯 greatest conquerors. His armies were ferocious, feared throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe. They blazed through Asia like a firestorm, razing cities, torturing captives, and massacring enemies. Anyone who dared defy Tamerlane was likely decapitated, and towers of bloody heads soon became chilling monuments to his power throughout Central Asia. By the end of his life, Tamerlane had imposed his iron rule, as well as a refined culture, over a vast territory-from Syria to India, from Siberia to the Mediterranean. Justin Marozzi traveled in the footsteps of this infamous and enigmatic emperor of Samarkand (in modern Uzbekistan) to tell the story of this cruel, cultivated, and powerful warrior.
2.Abraham Lincoln: Life, Speeches and Letters (Wordsworth Classics of World Literature) by Henry Ketchem.
To celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, Wordsworth are releasing a new edition, which combines two classic works. Henry Ketcham's "The Life of Abraham Lincoln" was written in 1901. Ketcham's brothers served under Lincoln in the Union army, and the book draws heavily no the personal accounts of people associated with Lincoln, resulting in a perceptive and entertaining biography that gives an insight into Lincoln the man, as well as Lincoln the political figure. The majesty of Lincoln's rhetoric continues to resonate down the years, and is captured in "The Speeches and Letters of Abraham Lincoln 1832-1865", edited by Merwin Roe. This title is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest Americans that has ever lived.
3.Existentialism For Dummies(r) by Christoper Panza.

Kinross's is more of a historian rather then a writer, Yet his style could be more readable but his treatment of this remarkable leader is very thorough and, so far as I can tell, remarkably balanced. Despite a full account of Kemal's darker side, I came away with even greater conviction that he was arguably the greatest leader of the 20th Century. Secular he may be but he is the man of the occasion to salvage the rotten Ottoman empire. |
