P2P & File Sharing Technology is completely legal. There are an countless number of legal uses for content found on P2P networks (such as to comment upon, criticize or parody a copyrighted work.). However, many of the files traded via P2P are copyrighted to their original owners and their rights need to be respected. Check your local laws to find out when file sharing is considered piracy in your country.

Latest news about Demonoid

Demonoid.com mysteriously disappeared earlier this week, but there is hope. The website is still down but the trackers are now fully operational again, perhaps a sign that Demonoid is crawling back up?

demonoidThe demonoid downtime caused quite some controversy, especially after the popular Dutch news site nu.nl reported that the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) was responsible for the downtime.

We contacted both the CRIA and Demonoid抯 ISP in an attempt to confirm the story, but they didn抰 want to respond to these allegations. Both parties confirmed nor denied their involvement. In addition, we tried to get an official response from Deimos, the founder and the head admin of Demonoid, unfortunately without any result.

The general consensus in the Demonoid IRC channel now is that the downtime is caused by hardware issues, and that the site will probably return within a few days.

Others still think that the Canadian ISP took Demonoid offline after they received legal threats (from the CRIA), but this is just speculation at this point. Demonoid抯 ISP said earlier that it would not hesitate to pull the plug on Demonoid if they had to, however, this explanation is less plausible now because the trackers still run on the same IP. This indicates that the servers are still hosted by their Canadian ISP.

It is great to see that the second largest BitTorrent tracker is back in action. Thousands of torrents stopped responding when the tracker went down, frustrating over a million BitTorrent users. I guess it抯 time to finish these torrents.

tracker dah ok..cuma site masih down

well just want to give some update about demonoid

[quote]The popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid is back online after nearly a week of downtime. The website and the tracker are hosted on the same ISP, but Canadian traffic is blocked thanks to pressure from the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA).

On the Demonoid frontpage we now read:

We received a letter from a lawyer representing the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and we need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience.

Demonoid.com ReturnsThis confirms our earlier reports this week, and show that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime. It抯 been a controversial week and at times emotions were running really high. In the absence of any official announcement it was really hard to separate fact from fiction, with rumor and counter-rumor.

The bad news of course is that Demonoid is now unavailable to Canadians. Unfortunately it is not the fist time an anti-piracy organization effectively shuts down access to a part of the BitTorrent community. Earlier this week Isohunt had to ban US users from its trackers, and last month TorrentSpy blocked access to US users, both by pressure from the MPAA.

At the time we write this article, the forums are still offline, but it probably wont take long before these are back online too. The first sign of Demonoid抯 return came yesterday when the trackers started responding again.

When an avalanche of upset Demonoid users came to TorrentFreak this week, the mood was grim when not only their site disappeared but also doubts were cast on our report. We aim to be a credible news source and understand the responsibility we have in the BitTorrent community. While understanding how Demonoid抯 Canadian users must be feeling right now, it抯 great that we now get the chance to share in the relief of the majority of Demonoid抯 dedicated userbase.

The second most popular BitTorrent tracker on planet earth has returned, that抯 the most important thing.

Update: Demonoid is having some problems again, this message now appears: 揟he latest changes to the site are giving us some problems - We抣l be back soon

Demonoid Shut Down. This Time It's Serious!

- The BitTorrent page closed again

Demonoidis one of the most popular BitTorrent websites on the Internet but theauthorities always tried to close it, accusing it of distribution ofillegal material. The Register reported today that Demonoid wentoffline and this time it might be a serious matter. It appears that theCanadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) blocked the serviceafter it made legal pressure over the company which hosts the Demonoidservers. At the time of writing this article, Demonoid is still available and, as the same source reports, a messageposted on its page states that CRIA took the website down.

"The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and becauseof this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for theinconvenience and thanks for your understanding."

Obviously, everybody expects to see Demonoid available again as this isnot the first time when the service encountered legal problems but itmanaged to deal with them and got back online. Some time ago, Demonoidwent offline but nobody knew for sure the reason for the outage. It wassaid that Demonoid was affected by the same legal pressure which closedother BitTorrent pages such as TorrentSpy.

But TorrentSpy was involved into a more serious matter as it was sentto the judge being accused of pirated software distribution. Moreover, the court demanded TorrentSpy to provide private details about theusers accessing the page but the BitTorrent service refused to do soand restricted the access of the US members. TorrentSpy's officialssustained their internal privacy guidelines protect the users from suchdemands.

Soon after the TorrentSpy trouble, IsoHunt, another BitTorrent popularservice, became unavailable, all the users talking about a similaraction launched by the authorities. Now, we're just waiting to see ifDemonoid manages to face the legal pressure and come back online.
