Perhaps not many of you have heard of charitable organisation Karisma Humanitarian Outreach Mission (KHOM) run by Pusat Tuisyen Akademik Karisma (Karisma) and Karisma Alumni Club (KAC), that is situated at Jalan Temenggong, Kota Bharu. It was founded by veteran commando, Captain Ariffin Abd Rani (Rtd) and his wife, Nik Marina Datuk Hussin in 2000, and started with only 20 students.

In addition to conducting educational classes and career guidance talks, Karisma students known as "Karismans" as well as its alumni, often conduct charitable and humanitarian projects, to make the world a better place. Karisma has long encouraged its students to be involved in various projects and initiatives to raise funds since 2004 – with its proceeds used to help locals in need, while also providing international aid through local NGOs like MERCY.

"My father was the one who taught my siblings and I. Although we grew up in a very strict environment as if we were students in the Royal Military College (RMC), we all looked up to him because he taught us a lesson that was worthwhile,” Nik Marina, beamingly shared.

Her father, Brigadier General Datuk Hussin Yusoff (Rtd), 74, was a former commandant of the RMC in 1989 to 1993, as well as a former student in 1960 to 1962. Always an educator at heart, immediately after his retirement in the military service, he opened up Institut Latihan Cemerlang in Jalan Kuala Krai, Kota Bharu.

Clearly, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree as Nik Marina has grown up to inherit her father’s penchant for teaching.

And speaking of teaching, Nik Marina’s husband who served in Somalia under the banner of the United Nations (UN) for UNOSOM (United Nations Operation in Somalia), as his final task, was also subjected to giving commando training at the Special Warfare Training Centre (PULPAK).

But as a retired commando, Nik Marina shared, one of her husband’s greatest challenge while setting up their tuition centre together, were the discouraging words that were hurled at him, such as: “What do soldiers know about teaching?”.

These challenges however, did not deter the couple. They were set to not only nurture individuals to excel in their academics, but also equip them with human values, so they would grow up to become a person of importance and give back a piece of themselves to the people and nation. In other words, they aim to produce national heroes and strive to do as much as possible, by starting small.

What started out with a charitable and humanitarian mission in 2013, soon flourished with a flood relief project in early 2015. And now, Karisma has taken further strides by sending its own volunteers, Dr Hariz Hazwan Zarir, 27, and Wan Nur Faeizah Wan Bunyamin, 25, to Syria.
