Penembak Czech menang emas pertama
09/08/2008

- AP

Uchishiba defends title, gives Japan 1st gold

BEIJING--Masato Uchishiba knew his opponent well, having been to his house in France and having had drinks together.

On Sunday night, he became the toast of Japan.

Uchishiba capped the rejuvenation of his career by capturing Japan's first gold medal of the Beijing Olympics by defending his title in the men's judo 66-kilogram class.

Uchishiba defeated Benjamin Darbelet by ippon in the final at the Beijing University of Science and Technology Gymnasium.

"In today's final, I don't really know how I won," Uchishiba said. "When I get home I'll look at the video and figure it out."

Japan also got a bronze medal from 19-year-old Misato Nakamura in the women's 52-kilogram class, giving the birthplace of judo three medals out of four events after two days of competition.

Uchishiba needed less than a minute to roll Darbelet onto his back and apply a firm chokehold that caused the Frenchman to concede, ending the match after just 1 minute 8 seconds.

"Japan often goes to France for training so I know him well," Uchishiba said of Darbelet. "I've gone out drinking with him. I've researched him, and not just about judo."

Darbelet, a three-time medalist at the European championships, said he felt strong going into the final after a sluggish morning session.

"I can't explain what happened," Darbelet said. "I put myself in a defensive position because it hurt. He tried to hold me down and do the joint lock, but I thought I could get out.

"I thought, 'He's been to my house, I've offered him drinks.'"

The victory made Uchishiba the third Japanese and seventh man overall to win two judo golds in Olympic history. He joins Tadahiro Nomura, the only three-time champion, and Hitoshi Saito as a multiple gold medalist.

The 30-year-old Uchishiba's triumph was as much a surprise as Ryoko Tani's inability to strike gold the previous night. Tani, attempting to win a third straight Olympic gold, had to settle for a bronze instead.

Uchishiba's career had apparently bottomed out after winning the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. He finished second at the 2005 world championships but failed to make a national team after that.

"I didn't win for a long time after Rio in 2005," he said. "But I didn't stop my career. Even though I was losing, I still believed I could win the gold at the Beijing Olympics."

Inspired by growing son Hikaru, who born just prior the Athens Games and was with family among a sizeable Japanese crowd at Beijing, he managed to put his career back on track in time to make the Olympic team.

"At the beginning of this year, little by little, it became a dream to make the Olympics," Uchishiba said.

Showing he could be competitive globally by finishing second at this year's Paris Super World Cup, he clinched his ticket to Beijing with a victory at the All-Japan weight class championships.

Uchishiba's toughest moment came in the semifinals, where he trailed late in the match against Cuba's Yordanis Arencibia, the 2007 world silver medalist. Trailing by a caution, he managed in the final 10 seconds to push Arencibia to receive a match-tying caution, then trip him up for a winning yuko.

Arencibia and North Korea's Pak Choi Min won the third-place playoffs to earn the bronze medals.

In the women's competition, Xian Dongmei preceded Uchishiba in winning a second straight Olympic gold by beating North Korea's An Kum Ae by yuko.

"It is really special because I won it in front of my home [crowd]," said Xian, who had a baby since the Athens Games. "I came back to the Olympics because it is held in Beijing."

Nakamura, who graduated from high school in March, lost by caution to An in the semifinals, but came back in the bronze-medal match to trip up South Korea's Kim Kyung Ok and hold her down for an ippon victory at 3:47.

"I was going for the gold medal and ended up with the bronze, so I'm disappointed," Nakamura said.

"My opponent [in the semifinal] was stronger. I tried to use my techniques but she resisted them all. From now I have to think of finding ways to use her power against her."

Nakamura has been considered somewhat of a prodigy since 2005, when she became the first high schooler to win at the Fukuoka International tournament since Tani competed as Ryoko Tamura.

This year, Nakamura won her first All-Japan weight class title after finishing third and second the previous two years.

Bindra lakar sejarah baru India

- AFP

Kvirkelia wins Georgia's first wrestling gold

BEIJING (AP): Manuchar Kvirkelia turned two strong moves into a two-period victory Wednesday over China's Chang Yongxiang in the Greco-Roman 74-kilogram weight class and Georgia's first Olympic wrestling gold medal.

Kvirkelia's decisive victory by 6-0 and 3-0 in the best-of-three format came less than a week after Russia and Georgia fought battles in the Caucasus mountains nation -- a gold that gave his homeland a brief bit of joy amid the turmoil and anxiety.

The gold also was Georgia's first -- and second medal overall -- in Beijing.

Kvirkelia, at 30 one of the most experienced wrestlers in any Greco weight class, used a 5-point throw to prematurely end the first period. Any period is halted when a wrestler takes a 6-0 lead.

Kvirkelia added a 2-point throw on a gut wrench in the second to clearly frustrate Chang, who has had little success previously on the world level and was attempting to win China's first wrestling gold.

The 23-year-old Chang's lack of experience -- he was 36th and 26th in the last two world championships -- showed as he had no moves to counter Kvirkelia's throws, constant pressure and aggressiveness.

Kvirkelia was the 2003 world champion and was third in 2006 and has been wrestling on the world level since Chang was barely into his teens.

Kvirkelia also didn't let the pro-Chang crowd become a factor, quickly silencing thousands of raucous, plastic stick-thumping rooters in the bout's early moments.

The bronze medalists were Christophe Guenot, whose brother Steeve won France's first wrestling gold in 84 years at 66 kg minutes before, and 2007 world champion Yavor Yanakiev of Bulgaria.

Yanakiev, last year's surprise world champion, lost any chance for the gold when he was upset by Chang 3-2, 1-1 in the opening round.

Italian Minguzzi surprises at Greco 84 kg

BEIJING (AP) - Andrea Minguzzi did a backflip, hoisted his coach and hauled him to the middle of the mat, wrapped himself in the Italian flag and ran a victory lap around the arena.

A happy winner, obviously, after coming from nowhere to steal wrestling's most coveted prize when he defeated Zoltan Fodor of Hungary in the 84-kilogram finals Thursday. The win makes him Italy's first Olympic wrestling champion in 20 years.

Fodor, also an unlikely finalist, was eighth in the world last year and, only three years ago, was 30th in the world juniors. But not as unlikely as Minguzzi, who had finished 45th, 18th, 17th, 28th and 27th in his previous five world championship tournaments.

The bronze medals were won by Nazmi Avluca of Turkey and Sweden's Ara Abrahamian, the silver medalist in Athens.

Fodor won the first period of the gold-medal match 1-1 on tiebreaker, but Minguzzi won the second by the same score before throwing Fodor in the third to win 4-0 and finish off the day of his life.

In order, the 26-year-old Italian policeman:

-Upset 2004 gold medalist Aleksey Mishin, last year's world champion, in what may go down as one of the biggest shockers in Olympic wrestling. Mishin is a four-time European champion who was in control after winning the second period 3-0, only to lose 2-1 in the third.

-Turned a disputed point into a semifinals surprise _ that word keeps coming up with him _ against Abrahamian. Sweden coach Leo Myllar used words much stronger than disputed.

"It's all politics, and it's all corrupt,'' he said.

In the oft-mysterious world of international wrestling, in which the rules are quirky and can be interpreted in widely varying ways, sometimes it's all in the game.

After he took the bronze, two-time former world champion Abrahamian said, "I don't care about this medal. I wanted gold. This will be my last match. I wanted to take gold, so I consider this Olympics a failure.''

Abrahamian's unhappiness doesn't take away from Minguzzi's accomplishment.

Minguzzi's golden day proved that even a relatively obscure wrestler _ despite his third-place finish in this year's European championships _ can get hot and win the Olympics, especially with all matches in a weight class now wrestled in one day.

Minguzzi certainly couldn't hide his delight, hugging and kissing the flower girls on the medal stand, biting into his gold medal and playing to the crowd, which reveled in his enthusiasm.

Before Minguzzi, the last Italian to win an Olympic wrestling gold was Vincenzo Maenza, who won at 48 kg in 1984 and 1988.

Brad Vering, last year's world silver medalist from the United States, lost to Denis Forov of Armenia in the round of 16 and did not medal. He plans to retire.

"It doesn't end up the way I wanted it to end up, but I'm not going to let my whole career just ride on one loss in the Olympic Games,'' said Vering, a former NCAA champion at Nebraska. - AP

Olimpik Beijing: Federer, Serena terkandas

- AFP
