Nobuta. O Produce
(credit to: wikipedia.org)
Nobuta. O Produce (野ブタ。をプロデュース Nobuta. O Purodyūsu?) is a Japanese drama series (dorama), produced and aired in 2005 by NTV. The television show is based on the book of the same name by Gen Shiraiwa (ISBN 4-309-01683-9).The story follows the high school lives of Shuji and Akira as theyattempt to make a shy Nobuko into the most popular girl in school.
Plot Overview
Introducing Nobuta
Shuji Kiritani (Kazuya Kamenashi) is a very popular high school boy whose girlfriend is Mariko Uehara (Erika Toda), the most popular girl in school. Despite his popularity among other students, he is relatively alone with Akira Kusano (Tomohisa Yama$hita) as the only person he hangs out with, despite constantly claiming thathe can't stand the other boy. One day, a very shy girl, Nobuko Kotani (Maki Horikita) comes to school and she instantly gets picked on by a few other girlsfor her shyness. Shuji and Akira then decide to "produce" her, or make her popular. They nickname her "Nobuta".
Production of Nobuta
The various episodes deal with Shuji and Akira's attempts including making Nobuta dress more fashionable, setting up a haunted house, an attempt at dating and selling Nobuta good luck charms. In the middle of all this a mysterious person insidiously attempts to waylay all of Shuji and Akira's efforts, but the trio always pull through. In the end, the person turns out to be Aoi, Nobuta's "friend", who later on attempts suicide in a dream shared by Aoi, Nobuta, Akira, and Shuji.
Finale
Shuji has to cope with his loss of popularity after he is caught outlying about Mariko and does not assist when a classmate is beaten up. In the final episode Shuji discovers that he and his family must move out of Tokyo because of his father's job and leave Nobuta to cope by herself with Akira. Shuji is given the option of staying in Tokyo until school ends. However he decides to move with his family as he does not want his brother alone in a new place. Akira follows Shuji to his new home town and surprises him by showing up at his new school. Nobuta is left alone in Tokyo, but she is not shy anymore, and is able to smile, and she also becomes somewhat popular among the other students. The end of the drama sees all three characters able to "live wherever we are" having learnt the meaning of friendship and love.
Main Characters
The drama centres around 3 main characters namely Shuji, Akira and Nobuko.
Shuji Kiritani
Shuji treats high school like a game where popularity is the main reward. Unfortunately he acts "cool" rather than himself and he is secretly very lonely. Although he does not like Mariko romantically, hehas lunch with her everyday in an effort to boost his popularity and make her happy. After he tells her the truth, he does repay Mariko by organizing a special "seaside" lunch before moving to Tokyo. He is only truly open to Akira and Nobuko, and gives them friendship charms thathis mother sent him from Chile. The antagonist of the story finds outthat the two of them (Akira and Nobuko) are his weaknesses, because he only wants their happiness, and uses it to their advantage. His dad is sent to Tokyo because of work, and gives Shuji the choice to stay in anapartment by himself until the end of high school, but Shuji would rather move with them because he is worried about his little brother.
Akira Kusano
Unlike Shuji, Akira is just plain annoying. Akira loves his soy milk so much, he gets drunk from it. He acts strangely and always finds ways to get on Shuji's nerves, though they appreciate each other's company and become very good friends in the end. Akira's father is the president of a company and wants his son to follow in his footsteps, but he would rather be a "dime in the street" and enjoy his youth. Although Akira secretly likes Nobuta (so much as to spy on her when she is on a doubledate), he does not pursue his feelings knowing that he could not make her happy. He demonstrates a high prowess in karate easily beating up a bully and smashing through a set of tiles. At the end of the series, he surprises Shuji by arriving at his new school the day before Shuji.
Nobuko Kotani
Nobuko is painfully shy after initially being rejected by her stepfather at a young age. She has been continuously bullied through her school life and finds it very difficult to talk and relate to other students. Through Shuji and Akira's help she manages to be more open with other people. Nobuta considers Shuji and Akira her two most important people, for she cannot choose one of them to give a charm (which will prevent bad things from happening to the person), and would rather have bad things happen to all three of them as to not make the two of them arguing on which one of them should have it. She is finally able to smile at the end of the series and has the confidence to continue even without Akira and Shuji.
Minor Characters
Mariko Uehara
She is in love with Shuji, though one-sided, and plays basketball. Mariko brings lunch for Shuji everyday, which shows her determination to have him love her back the same way she does. After an upperclassman asks her if she and Shuji are really going out, Mariko asks the same question to Shuji, and he is unable to answer. After Shuji tells Mariko the truth, she tries to accept it. She becomes good friends with Nobuko in the end of the series.
Aoi
The main antagonist of the story, though it is found out later in the series. She meddles and causes trouble in the main character's lives, such as destroying their class's haunted house and destroying the tape Nobuko worked hard on. Because Nobuko considers Aoi to be her first friend, nobody would suspect her, until Shuji finds out later. She stops causing trouble to them when all four of them share the same dream, and learn an important lesson.

Nobuta wo Produce
(credit to: wiki.theppn.org)
野ブタ。をプロデュース (Romaji: Nobuta wo Produce; English: Producing Nobuta) is a Japanese dorama based on a book of the same name by Shiraiwa Gen ( 文藝賞 ). It aired in the fall/winter season of 2005.
It begins with the introduction of the main character, Kiritani Shuuji, (also seen as Kiritani Shuji; Kamenashi Kazuya), a popular high schooler who uses lies and manipulation to create acomfortable life for himself in the close knit 2-B high school class. He is friendly with almost all of the other children in his school andhas convinced the school's beauty Uehara Mariko (Toda Erika)that she is his girlfriend, despite the fact that he has no desire toactually date her. He has a natural enemy, however, in the mildlyexistentialist and mostly weird Kusano Akira (Yama$hita Tomohisa).
One day a new girl comes to their school, Kotani Nobuko (Horikita Maki). She is a loner with long stringy hair who stumbles and stutters throughlife, drawing the anger and mocking of several of the class' moreviolent girls. After Shuuji and Akira witness a particularly nastyevent they decide to "produce" Nobuko, who they nickname Nobuta andmake her the most popular girl in school. Slowly Shuuji, Akira, andNobuta become close friends and face the strange happenings of the townand the doings of someone hoping to expose their plot for what itreally is.
While the story is superficially about the two boys makingNobuta popular, the true plot lies in the changes that Shuuji goesthrough as the lies and manipulations he has lived with and made use ofbreak down leaving him with only the option of changing himself. Throughout the dorama, Shuuji recognizes the changes he has alreadyundergone through befriending Nobuko and Akira and realizes the changeshe must make in order to become a good person.
Novel
The Dorama and the novel hold several key differences. The firstbeing the absence of an Akira character and the second being the factthat Nobuta is a chubby, greasy boy. Shuuji begins to produce Nobutaout of boredom, which leads to essentially the same effect as the dramaonly the consequences are much more negative. In fact the tone of thenovel itself is more negative and serious than the drama. There is alsoromantic compitition between Nobuta and Shuuji for Mariko's affections. While the drama and the novel are different in many aspects, however, they both explore essentially the same themes.
Dorama
The dorama version of Nobuta wo Produce was broadcast from October 15th, 2005 toDecember 17th, 2005. While it did not have astounding viewership, itwas immensely popular and became a landmark in the careers of all ofthe main actors. The theme song is Seishun Amigo by Shuuji to Akira which was the number 1 single of the year on the Oricon charts. The series consists of 10 episodes.
