from me as a beginner understanding;
1) reducing the effect of camera movement
--> higher shutter speed, at low light, higher ISO do increase shutter speed. rules of thumb : shutter speed = 1/focal length. i.e : focal length 200mm should used 1/200 to reduce bluring
2) stopping action
high shutter speed to freeze moment such as 1/5000
3) blurring action
of course slower shutter will do.. on day light. ND filter will help. i.e: shooting a waterfall
4) controlling depth of field
aperture setting determine the DOP.. example use of small aperture such as f/22 for landscape shoot.. big aperture such as f/1.8 for shallow DOP and bokeh..
do correct if i'm wrong.. terima sarkis
