Celebrity fashion mistakes - and how to avoid them
January 31, 2002
by SUSANNAH CONWAY, femail.co.uk
Fame and money do not always equal style as our picture gallery of celebrity fashion hits and misses shows.
We look at famous women who have got it wrong in the past but who are now getting it right. Click on the link below to see the pictures.
From fashion disaster to fashionista
Don't wear a trendy item just because it's fashionable - Kate looks better when she dresses to flatter her figure.
Kate Winslet
A few years ago Kate wore fussy outfits but now she's in the Hollywood big league - and having slimmed down her curves - she prefers a sleek, slimming way of dressing.
:dia:Fashion Lesson: Simple lines and colours flatter curvaceous figures. Don't wear a trendy item just because it's in fashion.
Denise Van Outen
Working on the Big Breakfast gave Denise, left, the opportunity to indulge her penchant for kitsch clothes and barely-there mini skirts. However, since appearing on the stage in the musical Chicago she has thankfully thrown out her PVC dresses.
:dia:Fashion Lesson: 'Fun' accessories should be avoided at all costs.
Michelle Collins
As brassy Cindy on Eastenders Michelle wore brightly coloured outfits and piled on the accessories, a look which spilled over into real life too. But in recent times she's pared down her look and now wears beautifully cut dresses and minimal accessories.
:dia:Fashion Lesson: If you're wearing a highly patterned outfit keep accessories to a minimum. When you leave the house take off the last accessory you put on to ensure you haven't overdone it.
Joely Richardson
A few years ago Joely, right, was just an acting dynasty scion who'd appeared in a few films. Wearing plimsolls to a premiere was a particular low point. But since blossoming into an It Girl she's become best friends with all the right designers.
:dia:
Fashion Lesson: Make sure your footwear complements your outfit!
Raquel Welsh
Raquel likes to show off her ample curves and famously upstaged the bride at her son's wedding by wearing a revealing low-cut dress. But a well-cut suit flatters her fuller figure and is a more becoming look for a woman in her fifties.
:dia:Fashion Lesson: Good bras are essential but keep them under wraps if you want to avoid the dreaded mutton-dressed-as-lamb syndrome.
Renee Zellweger
As Renee's career has soared she's transformd herself from a Texan home girl to Hollywood player in sartorial terms. Out have gone the mini skirts and in their place she favours, elegant dresses and an aura of confidence.
:dia:Fashion Lesson: Good grooming is the perfect finishing touch to an outfit. Pay attention to your hair, it is your ultimate accessory.

Hit: Madonna
If you're going to wear an oversized baseball cap, then it's imperative you have the right outfit to match. Do like Madonna and keep things casual, especially if your head attire screams a big name such as Von Dutch. Choose a quirky T-shirt, casual bottoms and big designer shades. After all, one of the benefits of wearing such a large cap is that you might not get noticed (errr, which may only appeal to you if you're A-list like Madge).
Miss: Natalie Cassidy
If you're a dedicated follower of fashion, definitely don't do a Natalie and look like you're trying too hard. Natalie's not only keen to show off her headwear, but also appears to be modelling all of this season's trends in one go! Natalie, wear your baseball cap low and remember to keep it casual! |

Hit: Charlize Theron
The long and short of it: if you're going to wear a glimmering, shimmering gold or silver dress, make it a long one. Exposing your cleavage will still make it sexy as hell, as will the way it clings to your curves.

Hit: Dido
Dido looks just gorgeous here because, as she proves time and time again, less is more. Team a '20s-style top with jeans for that oh-so 2004 look; and if you're going out for the night, just add matching jewellery (we love her necklace and hoop earrings) and some glam eye make-up. Result: Style without trying too hard.
Miss: Stella McCartney
Stella shows the danger of over-egging the '20s look. We know this outfit was for a themed party, but as you can see, once you start adding accessories from the same era (eg a hairband) suddenly you're more Thoroughly Modern Millie than thoroughly modern miss.

Hit: Jennifer Aniston
There's a reason the '50s clothes in the stores are such faithful replicas of original '50s style: it was a supremely stylish era. So if it ain't broke, why fix it? Do what Jennifer's done and really dress up for a night out. Pick a pretty strapless dress with puffball bottom and finish off the look with sexy heels and pinned-up hair. Simple but spectacular.
Miss: Paris Hilton
The reason Paris has got it so wrong is the same reason Jennifer gets it so right: authenticity. Whereas Jen looks like she's genuinely stepped out of the '50s, Paris just looks like she's rifled through her wardrobe for anything from another decade. She's clearly trying to be Sandy from Grease but the clothes and accessories are just not true to the era, and she ends up looking like an '80s Barbie instead.

Hit: Cat Deely
The key to wearing a bold print is (a) not to reach for any old piece that grabs your fancy, but to find a mix of colours that suits your hair and skin tones; and (b) be loud and proud. Cat does both of these things just perfectly in this gorgeous psychedelic, '60s-inspired dress.
Miss: Christina Aguilera
Christina gets it wrong not just with the colours here, but the print she's chosen. The bright pink just makes her dark hair and orange tan look even more OTT, and the wishy-washy, tie-dye pattern screams '70s Miss World, not 2004 Style Queen. |

Hit: Kylie
Green really is everywhere this season. And the key to wearing it well is not so much the shade - blonde Kylie and brunette Pink can both wear this peppermint colour - but picking an item of green clothing that's still very 'you'. Kylie pulls off cute little evening dresses like no one else (save Sarah Jessica Parker), unlike...
Miss: Pink
She looks incredibly uncomfortable in this evening frock. Unlike Kylie's choice, it's just not 'her'. Be sure you don't make the same mistake and pick an item you feel at ease in, especially if green isn't usually a colour you'd wear. And let's face it, the last time most of us wore green was back in the '80s, when it was fluorescent. And restricted to socks. |

Hit: Madonna
My, doesn't Mrs Ritchie look snug! And glamorous, to boot. A trench coat may be one of the most practical items in your wardrobe but it doesn't have to be frumpy, as Madonna shows in this fantastic black number. Just team it with a pair of gorgeous boots - and, if you're feeling Mafia enough, a pair of shades - and you'll look fabulous as well as snug as a bug.
Miss: Christina
Christina, unfortunately, looks neither snug nor glamorous here. Hmm, we're left wondering if Christina's actually got anything on under this coat. Despite Christina's attempts to make the novelty stripper look a style for this spring, don't be fooled. |

these black, trendy, loafer-inspired hiking shoes feature unique side detailing. They're also classic and very comfortable, so you can wear them all day, regardless of your destination. Made from premium leather, they feature a lightly-padded footbed and a flexible sole for added walking comfort.
Wear them with: Jeans, cords, cargos, or any cool pair of flat-front pants -- basically, everything but a suit.
these light gray, white and black casual slip-ons are a fashion staple this summer. Made from quality leather, they feature a split upper closing with side patch designs and a sturdy rubber sole. In two words, they are comfortable and classy.

Light Blue Top
With tan... (refer to the above pic)
Top: A light blue, long- or short-sleeve button-down shirt is a great addition to any man's wardrobe.
Trousers: Wear it with a pair of tan slacks, such as chinos or cargos.
Footwear & belt: Complete your look with a fine pair of light brown slides and a matching woven leather belt.
With blue...
Top: For a trendier, casual look, get yourself a light blue retro print T-shirt.
Trousers: Don it with a pair of traditional or light blue designer jeans.
Footwear & belt: Round out the look by wearing a slick pair of designer sneakers and a matching canvas belt.
With khaki...
Top: Your third option is a light blue long-sleeve T, which is yet another staple in a man's summer wardrobe.
Trousers: Wear your long-sleeve T-shirt with a pair of khaki linen flared drawstring trousers.
Footwear & belt: This ensemble doesn't require a belt -- wear it with a pair of black, brown, or tan leather sandals or flip-flops. |

Light Gray Top
With tan...
Top: A light gray polo is an ideal shirt to wear to work on casual Fridays or even for a day on the golf course.
Trousers: Don your polo with a nice pair of beige Dockers-style trousers.
Footwear & belt: Complete your look with a simple brown belt and brown leather sneakers or golf shoes.
With blue...
Top: Your second option is a light gray sleeveless or crewneck T-shirt.
Trousers: Wear it with your favorite pair of designer jeans -- distressed denim or light blue.
Footwear & belt: This getup doesn't necessarily require a belt, but you can wear it with a cool canvas belt and matching sneakers.
With khaki...
Top: My third suggestion is a light gray dressy button-down shirt.
Trousers: Match your collared shirt with a fine pair of flared 4-pocket khakis.
Footwear & belt: Complete your ensemble with a pair of black or tan leather shoes and matching belt. |

yg tu namanya FASHION VICTIM...nih ada diernyer definisi...
what is a fashion victim?
Below are three definitions of the term "fashion victim."
The first definition comes from Karin Eldor, a fellow fashion correspondent at AskMen.com. She describes a fashion victim as "someone who takes all the trends of a given time and ends up looking like a store mannequin; in a word, absurd."
The second one is courtesy of a friend of mine, who I consider a sleek dresser. To her, a fashion victim is someone who:
a- only purchases brand-name apparel;
b- is a compulsive shopper;
c- will only consider wearing an item that is "the latest trend," regardless of whether he can pull it off or not.
nih semua baca kat net...
The definition states that a fashion victim is "someone who buys an outfit that is perfectly in style, but when he wears it, he looks perfectly ridiculous." |

okey...last post...cilok dr. net...ada tetamu lak bertandang...
To make matters worse, a fashion victim usually succumbs to social pressure. A good example is someone who catches David Beckham on the Late Show and suddenly feels the urge to go shopping and buy the same ripped jeans, navy blazer and pointy crocodile leather shoes, because Becks looked pretty cool during his interview. Fashion victims are also likely to purchase an expensive suit just because a slick salesman tells them "it's all the rage this season," without even paying attention to how the shoulders fit.
avoid being a fashion victim
Now that you have a better grasp of the concept, here are a couple of pointers to help you avoid being or becoming a fashion victim.
Always be yourself
Wear what you think looks nice, not what others believe is trendy. You should always feel comfortable with what you're wearing, so stick to items that suit your personality and regular style, while keeping the occasion and setting in mind.
Chances are that if you feel people staring at you every time you wear that "trendy" puffy shirt, or you trip occasionally while wearing your pointy shoes, it's probably because they're not for you. The same goes for flashy colors: if you're not comfortable wearing fuchsia, then don't.
Less is more
Repeat after me: I won't overdo it. That's right, you don't have to wear every single trendy item you own all at once. My suggestion is to buy several trendy pieces every season, and mix and match them with the basics in your wardrobe. It's a cost-effective, safe way to look your best every day.
Maintain balance
Keep a good balance of basic and trendy clothing in your wardrobe. In other words, half your wardrobe should not consist of trendy clothes, or worse, clothes that are out of style.
Before you decide to purchase a new item, ask yourself if you are buying it because it's "in style" or because you genuinely like it. In addition, when it comes to designer goods, ask yourself if you would buy the garment if it didn't have the Lacoste logo on the front pocket. In the end, if you don't really like it, you probably won't be comfortable wearing it and are therefore better off not buying it.
Don't be a sucker for brand names
Another good tip is to avoid referring to your clothes by their designer labels (i.e. "my Boss belt" or "my Diesel Jeans"). By dissociating the item from its manufacturer, you will condition yourself to look at the item itself rather than be swayed by brand names.
Don't be a slave to the media
Don't base your look solely on what you see in magazines and on TV. Celebrities and models often overdo trends for attention, and their flashy attire will likely not translate well for you, in the real world.
Avoid the Zoolander effect
Finally, don't suck in your cheeks to look chiseled and never wear your sunglasses when the sun's not out -- yes, that goes for nightclubs too. Hope this helps.
Until next time, keep on stylin' and don't be a fashion victim. |
