Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death
Sanctuary
www.ironmaiden.com

Rating: B

Iron Maiden returns with an aptly titled album that really is a matter of life and death for the band.Their last two albums failed to match up to earlier glories putting the band at risk of being considered a legend whose creative peak has long gone by.Both Brave New World and Dance of Death were released to critical acclaim and initial fan worship but as time has proved neither album lived up to the hype that preceded it. Other than "The Wicker Man" and "Paschendale" the songs fade into the Maiden stew and settle around the middle of the catalog in terms of how memorable they are.

While Maiden has proven themselves to be one of the top Metal bands of all time they must get this one right if they are to have a future that is to be taken seriously and avoid just being a heritage band.

A Matter of Life and Death starts off strong with "Different World" and "These Colours Don't Run."Both tracks are classic sounding Maiden starting things off in the right direction.Next up is "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns" which sees vocalist Bruce Dickinson reaching deep and doing his best Geoff Tate impersonation. The track has a very Queensryche feel to it and, while probably not done intentionally, it comes across as the band trying to be someone they are not.

"The Pilgrim" finds Maiden reclaiming what makes them special.A Celtic main riff mixes with a NWOBHM rhythm resulting in the first classic sounding hit on the album."The Longest Day" and "Out of the Shadows" are pretty vanilla flavored. While you know it is Maiden neither song sets the world on fire.

The 7th track of the album is perhaps one of the heaviest offerings Maiden has pumped out in years.Lyrically as well as musically, "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" shows Iron Maiden pushing themselves to excellence.Following "Breeg," which is the first single to be released from the album, is a 9:24 epic titled "For the Greater Good of God."This is THE song on the album that shows Iron Maiden still has it.Not since the early Dickinson days have they written a track this Maiden-esque.

Following "Greater Good" is another classic sounding rocker titled "Lord of Light."The song breaks into many different pounding and rumbling sections as each of Maiden's three guitar players takes a turn at soloing. The song gallops along with the metallic roar of a Maiden classic.

The albums grand finale is called "The Legacy."The song starts out with Bruce singing over a medieval acoustic guitar. The overall theme is morose and spooky. An eerie tensions mounts and fades into a section that could be an acoustic version of something from Seventh Son.Bruce brings the tale to life and the music continues to increase in acoustic intensity until an electric guitar smashes into the soundscape.A very Sabbath-type riff lifts the energy level as Dickinson bellows along.Midway through, the track changes direction and becomes a riff-fest of molten electric guitars.Solos follow and Maiden proves they are still viable and able to write new music with the same precision, skill and creativity as what they have done in the past.

In the end, Maiden has succeeded in what they set out to do.Like any great Iron Maiden album, A Matter of Life and Death will require multiple listens to gain the full effect and depth of the music. In the end, however, you will have no problem giving the album the attention it deserves.

ni paling lepak...Billboards charts kat Eropah,Iron Maiden dapat number satu... dan nama dorang disebut satu ayat ngan nama Christina Aguilera...:lol:lol

'A Matter of Life and Death' has landed the first spot on the Europe-wide album chart released by Billboard.

It stand in front of the new Dylan album which often took the number one spot with Maiden just behind.

You can read the whole story below.

In related news, the new Maiden album is #4 on the united worldwide charts. It seems however that the sales number presented in this chart (175,000) isn't adding up with the ones Maidenfans received. Still, impressive feat for an album that was released less than a week ago in big markets.

The Billboard story:

There's a significant changing of the guard on Billboard's pan-European sales charts, as Iron Maiden and Justin Timberlake wrest control from Christina Aguilera and Shakira, respectively.

The veteran British rock band's "A Matter of Life and Death" (Capitol/EMI) opens at No. 1 on European Top 100 Albums, after collecting several impressive debuts.

"Death" goes straight to No. 1 in Germany and Italy, No. 2 in Norway and Switzerland. Twenty-six years after Maiden opened its British album chart account with a self-titled debut, it hits No. 4 there on sales of 44,000 units, to become its 14th top ten album. It also holds at No. 1 in Finland and starts at No. 4 in Austria and Spain and No. 5 in France and Ireland.

The runner-up on Top 100 Albums is also new, as Bob Dylan's "Modern Times" (Columbia) makes a confident debut around the region at No. 2, to match the start of 2001's "Love and Theft." That start includes No. 1 debuts in Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Ireland and fast starts at No. 2 in Germany, Austria and Sweden. "Times" is new at No. 3 in Holland and the United Kingdom, (the latter on sales of 55,000, more than twice those for "Theft"), No. 4 in Finland and No. 5 in Spain, and climbs 13-2 in the Belgian region of Flanders.

Maiden and Dylan's arrivals push Christina Aguilera's "Back To Basics" (RCA), which topped the pan-European chart for two weeks, down to No. 3. "Basics" now debuts at No. 3 in Greece and climbs 6-3 in Hungary, but opening single "Ain't No Other Man" is down 7-12 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.

There are a total of five new entries in the top ten of the Europe-wide album chart, the highest total since May. English modern rock band Kasabian is next in at No. 5 with its sophomore album "Empire" (Columbia), thanks to a powerful No. 1 debut in the United Kingdom with sales of 109,000 units, and a No. 3 start in Ireland. The band reached No. 9 in the U.K. with the title track and first single last month. Its self-titled 2004 debut now has U.K. sales of 700,000, according to the label. Kasabian has a British arena tour booked for December.

Iron Maiden is not the only long-running British rock act to impact this week's European charts, as Motorhead's "Kiss of Death" (SPV) comes in at No. 7 overall. Its domestic debut is at a relatively modest No. 45, but it's new at No. 4 in Germany. The band begins a European tour Oct. 31 in Dublin.

New at No. 8 on Top 100 Albums is Swedish garage rock outfit Mando Diao's third set "Ode To Ochrasy" (Mute), which makes a bold start in the G/S/A territories. It is at No. 3 in Germany and Austria and No. 5 in Switzerland. "Ode" arrives four years after the band's "Bring 'Em In" debut was released locally by EMI Music Sweden. The single "Long Before Rock 'n' Roll" opens at No. 16 in Sweden.

Timberlake climbs 40-1 on the Eurochart with "Sexyback" (Jive), ending the run of 15 aggregate weeks at No. 1 for "Hips Don't Lie" (Epic) by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean. "Sexyback" becomes Timberlake's first-ever No. 1 single in the United Kingdom, climbing 13-1 on just shy of 50,000 sales; it also climbs 15-1 in Ireland. It's new at No. 2 in Germany and Switzerland, No. 3 in Finland and No. 5 in Norway.

In its seventh consecutive week in the Eurochart top ten, Rihanna's "Unfaithful" (Def Jam) moves back 3-2, buoyed by a No. 7 debut in France. Rihanna today announces that she'll join shit*cat Dolls for a European arena tour that hits the United Kingdom Nov. 26.

IRON MAIDEN's STEVE HARRIS Is 'Delighted' With Reaction To New Album - Sep. 14, 2006

IRON MAIDEN's new album "A Matter Of Life And Death" has not only been released to enormous critical acclaim across the globe but has also resulted in some of their highest chart placings ever. In addition to their No. 1 chart debut on the Billboard Pan-European chart, the album has now debuted at No. 9 on The Billboard 200 chart and at No. 2 in Canada.

This is the band's first ever U.S. Top 10 entry in their long and illustrious history and a remarkable achievement, this being their 14th studio album. The album is also No. 1 in the U.S. Independent Album chart. It has even crashed in at No. 4 in the official album chart in India which is far and away the highest placing any heavy rock act has ever achieved in that country.

Band founder Steve Harris comments: "We really enjoyed the process of making this record and were delighted with the reaction. It's very gratifying that our fans all over the world seem to agree by supporting us so strongly. We are now very much looking forward to the forthcoming tour and intend to play live as much of the album as we feel works in the set. This tour will be very different to the last one in terms of the songs we play and we will very much enjoy the challenge of playing this new material live."

Manager Rod Smallwood adds: "This is great news for the band, especially
