The microKORG Synthesizer/Vocoder, cherished by musicians globally since its 2002 debut, holds the title of the most beloved hardware synth in music history. Expanding from the original microKORG, subsequent models like the microKORG XL (2009) and the microKORG S featuring 2+1 speakers, along with various color options, have been introduced. Korg's vision to make synthesizers appealing and enjoyable for musicians, ranging from beginners to professionals, track makers, and creators worldwide, was impeccably realized with the creation of this compact, user-friendly, and sonically impressive synthesizer.
Within the oscillator section, the foundation of tone, each voice can utilize two oscillators. Oscillator 1 boasts 8 preloaded waveforms, including sawtooth, square, and audio input, with the option to choose from the DWGS waveform library containing 64 built-in waveforms. The [CONTROL 1/2] knobs (DWGS limited to waveform selection) offer additional processing possibilities for each waveform. Furthermore, Oscillator 1 features a real-time oscilloscope displaying waveform changes. Oscillator 2, encompassing basic waveforms like sawtooth, square, and triangle, facilitates modulation techniques such as ring modulation, cross modulation, and hard sync.
The sound progression involves passing through the mixer, filter section, and ultimately reaching the amplifier section. The filter section incorporates four filter types, including a sharp 24dB mode for the low-pass filter. Post-filter, the sound enters the amplifier section, allowing adjustments to overall volume, panning, key tracking, and introducing a distortion switch for extreme sound distortion.
Temporal variations in sound are controlled by envelopes. "microKORG for Mac/Win" provides one envelope each for the filter and amplifier, following a clear ADSR 4-stage type. The envelope slider features a display illustrating the envelope's shape and progression, enhancing user comprehension.
Two built-in low-frequency oscillators (LFO) contribute to periodic sound changes for effects like vibrato and tremolo. LFO 1 and LFO 2 offer multiple waveform options, and the KEY SYNC switch enables waveform restart control during note on, LFO polyphonic operation, and tempo synchronization.
Delving into deep sound creation, virtual patching allows the connection of synthesizer sections to alter their behavior. "microKORG for Mac/Win" supports four modulation routings with the capacity to connect eight modulation sources and destinations, enabling users to explore a realm of intricate sound creation.
