80 Youth Volunteers From Korea Rolled Up Their Sleeves To Help Restore the
Numbak Vision Centre

KOTA KINABALAU, 31 July 2013 - Hyundai Motor Company (HMC), as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) embarked on an 11-day project to remodel the Numbak Vision Centre, which was used as a temporary shelter by 410 families who recently lost their homes due to a fire.

80 youth volunteers from the Happy Move Global Youth Volunteers Programme (a CSR campaign by HMC) were in Kota Kinabalu recently to work on the Numbak Vision Centre remodeling project. Among the renovation work undertaken by the team include construction of a classroom wall, putting on a fresh coat of paint, painting a mural on the fence as well as on the walls of the building.

A sum of RM200, 000 was allocated for remodeling and restoration of the Numbak Vision Centre. The fund was used for the purchase of raw materials, paints, tools and equipment, which were used for the construction project. Renovation work took about 9 days to complete. “With the completion of the renovation work, we hope classes for students can be carried out more conveniently and students here will feel more cheerful with the fascinating murals we have created for them,” said Mr. Kim Hoo-Keun, Head Of Asia and Pacific Regional Headquarters, HMC.

The Numbak Vision Centre was set up by Food for Hungry International Malaysia (FHIM) in Sabah to offer education for the underprivileged children in Kampung Numbak. Upon the completion of the renovation works, they will resume their daily classes here.

Apart from renovating the centre, the team also visited a nearby school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kebagu and conducted a cultural education series for about 395 students. Students were not only taught traditional Korean plays and handy crafts but they were also introduced to other Korean cultural and contemporary performances such as Taekwondo, Fan and Mask dance and K-pop.

The Happy Move Youth Volunteers Programme which started in July 2008 and has sent 1,000 volunteers every year to communities of various countries including Thailand, India, China, Turkey and Hungary. This summer, more than 10,000 university students in South Korea submitted their application to volunteer in this programme, however 500 students were selected through a strict evaluation (screening) process.

Simultaneously, four other Happy Move teams were volunteering on projects in Indonesia and China where homes are being built for the poor. Other ongoing projects include an environment project in China and restoration work for a village and its facility in India. The Happy Move teams will continue to seek out the less fortunate and create a little happiness by providing a fresh start for a better future.

The Happy Move Global Youth Volunteers program is a corporate social initiative under the Happy Move programme, which is one of the core programs by Hyundai that is anchored on its principle of “Moving The World Together.” The social contribution slogan of Hyundai Motor Company expresses Hyundai’s dedication to improving the world by sharing love with our neighbors in the global village.
