'Let's go make money, the universe is ours' is the topic of conversation at PS squad meeting
Throughout this season, NC Dinos captain Son Ah-seop, 35, has been exchanging "words of wisdom" with his teammates before games.
At first, he took turns, but eventually the somewhat unfamiliar words became a familiar part of the NC landscape.
Son's quotes have continued into fall baseball.
"Let's go make some money," he said in the first game of the wild-card series against the Doosan Bears, and "The universe is on our side" in the first game of the semi-playoffs against the SSG Landers.
"Since the end of the season, the players have been telling me what to do, and now I've run out of words," said Son, who was interviewed ahead of the second leg of the Semi-Po at SSG Landers Field in Incheon on March 23.
Still, he has to say something to boost the players' morale.
He's always been a big believer in luck and energy on the field, so he can't ignore the pregame "routine" that went awry in the previous two postseason games.
"It's a big deal. I thought about saying something like, 'Let's just play like it's the regular season, not the postseason,'" he says, and then found the right words.
I am NC Son As-seop
The game between the NC Dinos and Doosan Bears in the first inning of the wild card round of the
2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League at Changwon NC Park in Changwon, Gyeongnam, on April 19. NC leadoff hitter Son As-seop hits a single in the bottom of the first inning.
'Today we are crazy'.
It's a phrase he's already used once this season, but Son says, "I was looking at the timing with the intention of using it again. I was looking at the timing, thinking I'd use it again." He laughed.
Often in the postseason, the team with the 'crazy player' wins.
NC has a rotating cast of surprise performers, including Seo Ho-cheol, who hit the game-winning home run in the wild card game, and Kim Sung-wook, who hit the game-winning home run as a pinch-hitter in Game 1 of the semifinals.
'Today we are crazy' is the most appropriate slogan for NC, which is playing fall baseball with courage.
After taking the first game, NC's mood is at its peak, but Son Asub is not letting his guard down.
In the past, when he played for the Lotte Giants, he was frustrated by the early opening of champagne in fall baseball.
"Personally, I'm always nervous, and I don't let my guard down. However, I try not to show it to my juniors and maintain a good mood. I just need to keep that nervousness to myself," he said.
