How a Vehicle Wheelchair Lift Works

Viewed 72 times4-8-2022 02:06 AM

Before purchasing a vehicle wheelchair lift, it is important to know which type of lift will fit your vehicle. There are different kinds of wheelchair lifts, including single arm lifts, dual post lifts, compact ones, and hybrids. Before purchasing, make sure to read the manual carefully to determine whether the product you're interested in will meet your needs. The pros and cons of each type are detailed below. Read on to discover which one will work best for you!

Single arm

A single arm vehicle wheelchair lift provides a safe, easy means of getting into and out of a vehicle. Its mechanism works by raising the platform 12 above the floor. The platform supports a wheelchair at the rear of the vehicle. This lift is a convenient solution for tall or large wheelchair users, and allows rear-door access for tall or wide vehicle occupants. In addition, the lift is installed on the vehicle's chassis, providing an undiminished look and function.

Dual post

A dual post vehicle wheelchair lift has two arms positioned behind the front passenger seat, and restricts the front passenger's movements and reclining ability. A single-arm lift is easy to install and stows inside the vehicle. The single-arm style does not use a platform and is electrically powered. It is secured by webbed straps that act as a harness for the wheelchair. This style is often a better choice for vehicle accessibility.

Hybrid

The benefits of a hybrid vehicle wheelchair lift include the ease of installation, lower headroom requirements, and a large lifting capacity. These lifts are designed to accommodate different types of mobility devices and weights. They also include security features, such as interlock protection, that prevent the mobility device from getting stuck during transport. Hybrid vehicle lifts are also fairly simple to use. They use a drive-on/drive-off dual-entry platform, which means that no vehicle modifications are needed.

Compact

The Compact vehicle wheelchair lift operates by positioning the platform of a wheelchair onto a lowered floor 64 and raising or lowering the wheelchair support platform 12. The vertical actuator motor 30 and lateral actuator motor 22 lower the support platform by a set of levers and a control module 56 activates the controller 56. The controller then sends a signal to a lateral actuator motor 22 to draw the arm to a retracted position along a path 52. A switch or sensor within the housing 18 indicates that the platform has reached its retracted position.

NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has fined a vehicle wheelchair lift maker $1.75 million for violating federal vehicle safety regulations. The company has agreed to pay the fine and undergo additional federal oversight as a result of its failure to promptly notify the agency of a problem. The wheelchair lift maker, Ricon Corp., admitted that its wheelchair lifts did not meet federal safety regulations and failed to alert federal regulators to the problem.

ADA

To comply with ADA regulations for vehicle wheelchair lifts, these units must meet certain requirements. For example, they must be equipped with a manual backup mode, which is necessary in case the primary power source fails or the lift malfunctions. Manual backup modes allow the lift to lower the platform to the vehicle floor when it is fully loaded or raised to its vehicle loading position when it is empty. The lift must also have a manual wheelchair retention device and an inner roll stop, both of which must be deployable by hand.

Price

If you are considering purchasing a vehicle wheelchair lift, you should be aware that the process isn't inexpensive. You need to carefully consider the mounting options before you buy. External mounts, as the name suggests, are installed outside the vehicle. Internal mounts, on the other hand, are installed inside the car, usually in the bed of a truck or van. Under vehicle mounts, on the other hand, hold the lift underneath the vehicle, reducing the ground clearance of the vehicle. Regardless of the style you choose, it's important to consider how you will maintain the wheelchair lift.
