BATU PAHAT — A young girl (pic) was found wandering by the roadside after her mother allegedly beat and abandoned her along Jalan Parit Osman-Parit Sulong here.
Passers-by alerted the police after spotting her with wounds on her hands, at about 6.55am yesterday.
Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Din Ahmad said the girl, believed to be about four years old, claimed that her mother had caned her at their home before leaving her at the roadside on Monday night.
“The girl told us she was from a nearby estate. But she was unable to give details of her parents or which estate she came from,” he said yesterday.
ACP Din said the girl, who seemed weak possibly due to tiredness and hunger, was under treatment at the Batu Pahat Hospital. He said the child also had scratch wounds on her hands and a wounded finger, which was already wrapped with a white cloth when she was found.
“The girl claimed that the injuries were sustained after her mother caned her but we are still unsure of the story as her parents are yet to be identified,” he said.
ACP Din urged anyone with any information on the case to contact the nearest police station or call the state police hotline at +607 221 2999.
“We are investigating the case under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child abuse,” he said- STAR
