Beirut suicide bombings kill 43; suspect claims ISIS sent attackers
By Greg Botelho, Paul Cruickshank and Catherine E. Shoichet, CNN
Updated 0501 GMT (1301 HKT) November 13, 2015

(CNN)A pair of suicide bombings struck southern Beirut on Thursday, killing 43 people and leaving shattered glass and blood on the streets, Lebanese authorities said.

At least 239 others were wounded, according to state-run National News Agency.

A would-be suicide bomber who survived the attack told investigators he was an ISIS recruit, a Lebanese security source said. The man, a Lebanese national from Tripoli, Lebanon, was taken into custody after the blasts. He told authorities that he and three other attackers arrived in Lebanon from Syria two days ago, the source said.

Lebanese intelligence believes the bombers could be part of a cell dispatched to Beirut by ISIS leadership, the source said, but investigators are still working to verify the surviving suspect's claim. The three other bombers were killed in the explosions.

In a purported ISIS statement circulated on social media, the terror group claimed responsibility for the blasts. CNN hasn't confirmed the authenticity of the statement.

The explosions detonated within 150 meters (490 feet) and five minutes of each other, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said, shaking an open-air market and other parts of the Bourj al-Barajneh district in southern Beirut.

"There's a lot of shattered glass on the street, a lot of blood, and it's really just a scene of chaos and carnage," journalist Tamara Qiblawi told CNN shortly after the blasts.

Bombs strike where Hezbollah has strong presence

Three local members of Hezbollah were among those killed in the attack, the Lebanese security source said. The members do not appear to have been a target in the attack and were in "the wrong place at the wrong time," the source said.

The Lebanon-based, Iran-backed Shiite militia has a strong presence in the area where the blasts occurred.

Police are investigating whether two of the bombers were Palestinians from a nearby refugee camp where ISIS has been recruiting, a Lebanese government source said.

In addition to the human toll, the explosions damaged at least four nearby buildings. Video distributed by Reuters showed a dramatic scene in the bombings' aftermath, with rescue workers carrying out victims past piles of rubble and through a mass of people.

And the attackers may have had other targets in mind. One of the suicide bombers tried to get inside a Shiite mosque in the area but was stopped, the government source said.

After the blasts, authorities closed all entrances to Bourj al-Barajneh, NNA reported. Judge Sakr Sakr dispatched military police and other authorities to investigate the blasts, cordoning off the area around them.

Citizens have been urged to stay away from the bloody scene as well as nearby hospitals so that ambulances can more easily get back and forth.

Prime Minister Tammam Salam declared Friday a day of mourning for the victims of the bombings, a terrorist attack condemned by officials across the country's political landscape.

Bombings not new to Lebanon

ISIS, which does not have a large presence in Lebanon, claimed responsibility for a car bombing in the capital last year.

The country has seen plenty of violence involving numerous parties in recent decades, including the current fallout from the bloody civil war in neighboring Syria.

That war has flooded Lebanon with more than a million refugees, according to the United Nations, and also contributed to intermittent spillover violence.

Most of that bloodshed has been concentrated near the Syrian border, though not all, as evidenced by a November 2013 Beirut bombing that killed at least 23 people and wounded about 150 more.

The al Qaeda-linked militant group Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for that bombing and warned of more to come unless Hezbollah stopped sending fighters to support Syrian government forces.

CNN's Nick Paton Walsh, Jim Sciutto, Hamdi Alkhshali, Elwyn Lopez and Jason Hanna contributed to this report.

A Day Before the Paris Attack, Suicide Bombers Killed 43 in Beirut

A day before the Paris attacks that left at least 120 dead and the country in lockdown, suicide bombings in Beirut on Thursday left 43 dead and 239 wounded. According to a terrorist who survived, the attack was reportedly carried out by an ISIS cell sent to Lebanon from the group's stronghold in Syria.

The explosions took place in the southern part of the city near a busy open-air market in the Bourj al-Barajneh district. A number of ISIS-linked Twitter accounts have claimed responsibility for the attack, though nothing could be independently confirmed, according to CNN.

The events went largely unnoticed in the American news cycle. Interest in the Paris attacks trounced the media attention to Beirut. Google Trends searches highlight the massive disparity in news headlines and search interest. But on Twitter, the demand was loud and clear.

Indian blogger Karuna Ezara Parikh wrote a poem that's gone viral since the Paris attacks. "It's not Paris we should pray for," she wrote. "It is the world. It is a world in which Beirut, reeling from bombings ... is not covered in the press."

Inside the attacks: Graphic video posted to the Arabic-language website Al Arabiya reportedly reveals the mayhem, including gunfire.

The city is still reeling. "There's a lot of shattered glass on the street, a lot of blood, and it's really just a scene of chaos and carnage." Tamara Qiblawi, a journalist, told CNN.

The carnage in Beirut was likely mitigated, however, by the heroic behavior of one man, Adel Termos. Termos was in the market with his young daughter and witnessed the first explosion. Reportedly, he saw another bomber preparing to detonate, and jumped into action.

"He tackled him to the ground, causing the second suicide bomber to detonate," Elie Fares, a Beirut-based physician, told PRI. "There are many, many families, hundreds of families probably, who owe their completeness to his sacrifice."

Termos and his daughter were both killed in the explosion.

Online, Twitter users around the world memorialized his sacrifice.

If ISIS is confirmed as the responsible party, the event would appear to be part of a global wave of terrorism the organization has unleashed in recent months. Last month, another bombing in Ankara, Turkey, left nearly 100 dead. In August, a large car bomb exploded in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, injuring six. In July, clashes between the Islamic State and Egypt left over 100 militants and 17 Egyptian soldiers dead in the Sinai.

The attacks potentially represent a new and more dangerous stage in the world's war against ISIS as the terrorist group continues to mount increasingly sophisticated and deadly strikes around the globe.

A new report from the UN reveals that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) maintained regular contact with members of ISIS since May 2013. The UN identified contact with IDF forces and ISIS soldiers.

“In a new report from the UN, it is revealed that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) were maintaining regular contact with members of the so-called Islamic State since May of 2013. Initial reports from the IDF stated that this was only for medical care for civilians, but that story fell apart when the UN observers identified direct contact between IDF forces and ISIS soldiers, including giving medical care to ISIS fighters. Observations even included the transfer of two crates from the IDF to ISIS forces, the contents of which have not been confirmed at this time. Further the UN report identified what the Syrians label a crossing point of forces between Israel and ISIS, a point of concern brought before the UN Security Council. This report from the UN strengthens the claims by the Syrian regime that Israel is heavily involved in operations within the nation.”
This is part of a continuing pattern of Israeli support for the Islamic State. It was only two months ago that Israel attacked Syrian forces in opposition to ISIS forces. Israeli attacks even killed an Iranian military adviser for the Syrian military just two weeks ago. The U.S.’s financing of ISIS, part of the effort against Syrian president Assad, is well documented, as well. That the efforts to undermine the Assad regime were in turn strengthening the same terrorist group which recently set a Jordanian pilot on fire to set an example is conveniently ignored by the higher up military command.
When the United States began operations against ISIS, Israeli high command seemed reluctant to give any support and called the move a mistake. The support of ISIS fits in with Israeli concerns in the region, namely that of Syria and Iran, and U.S. opposition to ISIS has put the United States in the awkward position of once again arming the enemies we will be fighting tomorrow.
Syria and Iran both pose a threat to Israel with their sizable conventional forces and political clout in the region, in much the same way Iraq was before the elimination of Saddam Hussein. With the toppling of Saddam, pieces of concern remain, and Israel appears to still maintain the old axiom that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Supporting ISIS for Israel enables them to eliminate two issues at once, only once Syria is no longer a concern — a move which would in turn neutralize Iranian influence in the region — Israel then would turn its attention to ISIS, bolstered by other anti-ISIS forces from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United States. That would take several more years, however, during which time ISIS would continue to grow in both size and power. By the time they turn their attention to ISIS, it is quite possible that ISIS would have toppled the nations which Israel is counting on for support of such an operation. Too little, too late.
Traditionally such groups as ISIS have relied upon Saudi Arabia for support, but Saudi money is conspicuously absent from ISIS coffers. Unlike groups before, ISIS has gone self-financed, relying upon prostitution, slavery and oil for its financial well-being. This, in turn, removes the protections which Saudi Arabia has relied upon for almost a century to prevent such organizations from turning on the House of Saud and potentially conquering the kingdom which is now in the sights of the Islamic State.
In turn, the ISIS forces have all but forced the Kurds to become a mighty force unto themselves, much to the anger of neighboring Turkey. Rather than helping to fight ISIS, Turkey is instead attacking the forces standing in opposition to ISIS. The entire situation has spiraled out of control.
In effect, there is no side to support here, as each side is being supported at once in opposition to the other side. By enabling the creation of ISIS, we have taken an already unstable situation and poured gasoline over it. Now we are facing a true threat, not from ISIS or Iran or Syria, but against our own arrogance. We have been blinded to the death and destruction created by our actions in the Middle East.
We once were respected throughout the region, as neutral peace-brokers, the nation which oversaw the breakup of the Barbary pirates and a country which became eternal friends with the people of Iran when all of Europe ignored them. Now we are Israel’s expected muscle, to carry out their dirty work in an effort to destabilize the region and de-power those the tiny nation views as a threat. They will support anyone, if it meets a short-term goal, even if the result is a plot more complex and ridiculous than an episode of “Passions. This can, and will cost them long-term.
The United States cannot be party to this. Whatever the political and economic cost, the U.S. must disengage from all sides in the Middle East, before it is too late.
