Barbie is getting her own movie.

The live-action big-screen film is being penned by Jenny Bicks, whose credits include What A Girl Wants, Rio 2 and episodes of Sex And The City.

Sony Pictures and Mattel have teamed up to develop the comedy starring the famous doll.

The film will be produced by husband-and-wife team Walter F Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, best known for Men In Black 3.

The pair said in a statement: "While it's an overused word, Barbie truly is a legend, a cultural symbol whose career choices have been as unlimited as her wardrobe.

"She is about empowerment, but never at the expense of fun. Our hope is to capture all of these aspects of Barbie in a modern take of the character that can appeal to moviegoers of all ages."

Barbie has had more than "150 careers", including princess, president, mermaid and movie star, filmmakers said, and will inhabit many of these roles in her live-action big screen debut.

Sony, which sees the film as a global franchise, plans to go into production by the end of the year.

It's the second collaboration for toymaker Mattel and Sony. The companies are developing the film adaptation of Masters Of The Universe, based on Mattel action figures.
