Berkenaan cloud, berita terbaru yg wa dapat ( dari sumber Persatuan Juruanalisa Sektor Awam, tapi masih tak pasti lagi ), gomen akan implement cloud scr berperingkat... Jumlah datacenter gomen akan dikurangkan... Kalo tak silap, semua IPTA nyer datacenter akan dipusatkan di UPM saja, Univ2 lain kena tutup utk jimat kos, yg tu utk agensi bawah Kem Pengajian Tinggi.... Kementerian lain pun akan ikut step yg sama.... |

i'm no expert, just want to share what i know and some experience i have. i used to oversee almost 100 servers (physical and virtual, onsite and remote) just by myself with no backup (the only onsite point of contact). very hard to go on vacation and really get good night sleep.
for the company i used to work for, we used/developed applications based on the needs. we bought software and used them as it is. we also bought them along with dev kits and made necessary modifications to fit our needs and also developed in-house applications.
we're not only hosting data, mostly private data that requires the company to comply with PCI DSS requirements with at least an annual (if not bi-annual) audit, but we also provided web services and developed hardware that works with the software (also must comply with PCI DSS requirements). fyi, PCI DSS compliance are requirements set by visa, mastercard, amex, jcb and discover. so, information security is very strict for a company like us. all desktops/laptops must be encrypted at bios level. datacenters? you can imagine.
i never work for a bank, but did have experience helping their employees since we're their ally. so, i don't know about their development teams. however, usually big companies, all have their own internal development teams because they always want to have an application that really cater specifically to their needs. either they develop the applications from scratch or modify third party applications to meet their needs.
for cloud technology, no need for me to explain its advantages/disadvantages. we all can do the research (a lot of information on the internet on this). understand it and see if it's what you're looking for and want.
if you're owning or working for smb (small medium business), cloud technology (google/amazon) is an excellent choice. you really reduce overall costs. and you don't have to worry about security, failover and disaster recovery. it's also easy for you to deploy, re-deploy or decommission the servers. it really takes away all the worriness about the hardware (maintenance and warranty).
even big companies are moving to cloud technology, but they usually have their own cloud farms.
for TT, cloud technology is an excellent option. but, make sure you truly understand the cost, contract structure, including licensing issue, etc.

yup cloud technology is the best choice so far and i am currently focus 100% on google app engine cloud.
great experience u have. wish i can have and feel that working experience there. oobi actually u working on what area heh? is it on database, server or development. i am interested to know how u can achieve the current level in ur career. |

when u said u oversee 100 servers means that u take care from A-Z of the server? i guess u take care on the server performance, backup, virus and security. am i right? u also can prepare new server (virtual or non virtual) by request from new / current requirement . |
