MINI Is Back For The 2012 World Rally Championship

fter missing a key deadline for entry into the 2012 World Rally Championships, it looked like MINI would be watching the 2012 WRC season from the sidelines. As is often the case in professional motorsports, there was more to the story than a missed paperwork deadline.
MINI’s parent, BMW, is unhappy about television coverage of WRC events in the German market, and has concerns over the financial stability of the company that owns the broadcast rights.
Complicating things, the relationship between BMW and Prodrive, the company that builds and runs the MINI WRC cars, is best described as “complex, and not in a good way.”
Despite these hurdles, Autosport is reporting that the MINI WRC team will be back for the 2012 rally season, and that an announcement will be made to clarify the situation later in the week.
As it stands now, MINI will field two cars, but with only one full-time, factory backed driver. Spanish star Dani Sordo, who put the MINI WRC car on the podium twice last year, retains his job and will run the bulk of the 2012 events.
The second team car will be driven by private drivers with the cash to run an event, although team driver Kris Meeke is expected to drive a partial season for MINI.
It’s possible that not even Sordo will run the full 2012 season, thanks to the costs associated with distant events like Rally New Zealand. Even Sordo’s seat could be available for rent if the team decides to cut back on expenses.
While this is far from an ideal situation, it allows MINI to run what amounts to a full season in at least one and possibly two cars. Even cloudier is what happens beyond the 2012 season, as Prodrive’s contract to run MINI’s cars is up at the end of 2012. |

Proton brings McRae name back to WRC
PROTON will field two Satria Neo S2000s in Monte Carlo, Sweden, New Zealand, Finland, Great Britain, France and Spain next season. Two-time Junior world champion PG Andersson and double European champion Giandomenico Basso will contest the season-opening Rallye Monte-Carlo with McRae set to feature for the team during the year.
“PG and Giandomenico will both be driving in the SWRC,” said PROTON Motorsports boss Chris Mellors. “As well as them, Alister McRae will also be driving for us. Alister’s priority will be the defence of his FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship title, but we will see him in the SWRC as well. Beyond that, we haven’t made too many decisions, we want to look at drivers and keep an eye on some of the younger guys who are out there.”
PROTON has enjoyed WRC success in the past, guiding Karamjit Singh to the Production world crown in 2002. In recent seasons it has concentrated on campaigns in the Asia Pacific series and the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.
Alister McRae, 41, is the younger brother of the late Colin McRae who won the WRC title in 1995 but lost his life in a helicopter accident in 2007. Alister McRae has made 75 starts at world level, his last coming on Rally New Zealand four years ago.

Loeb Excited ahead of Monte return
Sebastien Loeb says he is relishing starting his bid for his ninth World Rally Championship title on Rallye Monte-Carlo.
The event, which begins in the French city of Valence on Tuesday 17 January, returns to the WRC trail for the first time in three years. Loeb says the rally is “mythical” and that its return is another boost to the championship’s popularity.
“For sure Monte Carlo is a rally I always enjoyed,” said Loeb, a five-time winner of the asphalt event. “It’s a rally in France with a very good atmosphere. It’s a mythical rally, I think it’s nice it’s coming back in the championship. It was a bit disappointing when it was pulled out. Also it’s Daniel [Elena, my co-driver’s] home rally, so he is very happy.”
Loeb will be one of the favourites for honours on the 80th running of Rallye Monte-Carlo, which covers a competitive route of 430 kilometres and is due to finish in the Principality on Sunday 22 January.
The 37-year-old Frenchman will be at the wheel of a Citroen Total World Rally Team DS3 WRC.
Rallye Monte-Carlo last formed a round of the WRC in 2008 when Loeb claimed a comfortable victory ahead of new Citroen team-mate Mikko Hirvonen.
