Trump says Musk has ‘lost his mind’ and dismisses peace offering

Trump says he’s ‘not particularly’ interested in reconciling with Elon Musk, who reportedly wanted to speak to president

Elon Musk and Donald Trump.

Donald Trump appeared to dismiss a peace overture from his former close political ally Elon Musk on Friday, calling him someone who had “lost his mind” as the extraordinary falling out between the two men looked set to continue.

The US president and the richest person in the world – who had been tasked with slashing the federal government – fell out in spectacular fashion on Thursday in a series of escalating social media posts that roiled the political world.

On Friday, ABC News interviewed Trump by phone and he doubled down on his newfound ho*tility to Musk, who had backed him with millions of dollars in the 2024 election campaign.

The news channel asked Trump about reports of a call scheduled with Musk for later in the day. “You mean the man who has lost his mind?” Trump replied, saying he was “not particularly” interested in talking to him right now.

ABC reported that Musk wanted to talk to Trump, but the president was not ready to talk to Musk.

Earlier Musk had suggested he may de-escalate his public row with Donald Trump after their spectacular falling-out.

The Tesla chief executive signalled he would back down on a pledge to decommission the Dragon spacecraft – made by his Space* business – in an exchange on his twitter social media platform. He also responded positively to a call from fellow multibillionaire Bill Ackman to “make peace” with the US president.

Politic*o also reported overnight that the White House had scheduled a call with Musk on Friday to broker a peace deal after both men traded verbal bl*ws on Thursday. But later on Friday, multiple reports suggested there was now no call set up between the two men.

The rolling spat – which played out over social media and in a Trump White House appearance – included the president saying he was “very disappointed in Elon” over Musk’s criticism of his tax and spending bill. Musk also said the president’s trade policies would cause a recession and raised Trump’s connections to the convicted child s*x offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Musk had responded to a Trump threat to cancel his US government contracts on Thursday with a post on twitter stating he would retire his Dragon spacecraft, which is used by Nasa. However, responding to an twitter user’s post urging both sides to “cool off”, Musk wrote: “Good advice. Ok, we won’t decommission Dragon.”

Musk also appeared to proffer an olive branch in a reply to a post from the hedge fund owner Ackman, who called on Trump and Musk to “make peace for the benefit of our great country”. Musk replied: “You’re not wrong.”

Politico also reported a potential peace call between Musk and the White House, claiming Trump’s aides had worked to persuade the president to tone down his public criticism of the Tesla owner before arranging the phone conversation for Friday.

After a brief interview with Trump about Thursday’s Musk implosion, Politico reported that the president displayed “an air of nonchalance” about the spat. “Oh, it’s OK,” Trump said, when asked about the dispute. “It’s going very well, never done better.” Referring to his favourability ratings, Trump added: “The numbers are through the roof, the highest polls I’ve ever had and I have to go.”

Politico reported that Trump’s aides had urged the president to focus on getting his tax and spending bill through the Senate instead of clashing with Musk, with one of his Truth Social posts reflecting a less confrontational tone. “I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform, before adding that the tax-cut legislation was one of the “Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress”.

Trump and Musk trade insults as row erupts in public view

The rift between US President Donald Trump and his former adviser Elon Musk has erupted into the open, with each trading insults after the tech billionaire criticised one of Trump's key domestic policies.

The two billionaires escalated the feud throughout Thursday, lobbing barbs at each other on the social media sites they each own, suggesting a bitter conclusion to their unlikely alliance.

The day began with Trump saying he was "disappointed" with Musk's criticisms of his administration's centrepiece tax and spending bill, musing that it may be the end of their "great relationship".

Musk then accused Trump of "ingratitude", adding: "Without me, Trump would have lost the election".

After hours of sparring, Trump appeared to downplay the situation. "Oh it's okay," he told news site Politico. "It's going very well, never done better." His aides have scheduled a phone call with Musk for Friday, the same news site reported.

Musk also appeared to believe there was a need to patch things up. Late on Thursday, in response to post by Bill Ackman, a prominent Trump backer, which suggested the pair needed to make peace, he wrote: "You're not wrong".

The breaking point in the relationship between the president and his one-time ally came after weeks of Musk lobbying against Trump's "big, beautiful" spending bill, which was passed by the US House last month and is awaiting a vote in the Senate.

Shortly after leaving the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) after 129 days in the job, Musk took to his site X to call the bill a "disgusting abomination" and posting: "Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong."

He argued that the bill will irresponsibly add to the US national debt, and encouraged his followers to phone their representatives to express opposition to the spending plan.

Speaking to reporters during a news conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday, Trump defending the bill and said: "I'm very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here. All of a sudden he had a problem."

He went on to suggest that Musk was upset about the removal of subsidies and mandates for electric vehicles, which could affect his Tesla business.

Musk denied this was the case and wrote: "Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!), but ditch the MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill."

"Pork" is a term used in US politics to describe wasteful government spending, particularly on things meant to curry favour with particular groups or local areas.

he partnership between the two men began when Musk endorsed Trump last July after an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. The Tesla boss reportedly funnelled $290m (£213m) into getting him back into the White House.

Amid a flurry of posts on X after Thursday's news conference, Musk took credit for the sweeping Republican victory in last November's election, writing: "Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate."

"Such ingratitude," he added.

Musk went on to post a poll, asking his followers: "Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?"

Over the course of the day, Musk went on to repost a tweet calling for Trump to resign, argue that his global tariff plan will trigger a US recession, and to suggest without evidence that Trump appears in unreleased files related to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking and died by suicide while awaiting trial. Trump was president at the time. He said he knew Epstein "like everybody in Palm Beach knew him" but had a "falling out with him a long time ago".

The White House condemned Musk's allegation, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying in a statement: "This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted."

On his Truth Social network, Trump claimed that Musk "just went CRAZY" and went on to post: "The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn't do it!"

Musk's companies, including Tesla, SpaceX and Starlink have direct contacts with the US government and, like many other businesses, also benefit from subsidies and tax breaks.

In response, Musk said SpaceX "will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately". The craft is used to shuttle people and supplies to the International Space Station.

However, he later he appeared to back down from that threat, saying in response to a post on X urging him to cool off: "Ok, we won't decommission Dragon."

Telsa stock dropped by 14% within hours of the row bursting out into public.

According to the most recent analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the spending bill working its way through Congress will increase the US national debt by $2.4tn over 10 years and leave nearly 11 million people without government-backed health insurance.

The White House disputes those figures, saying they don't account for revenues brought in by increased tariffs.

Put in charge of radically slashing government spending at Doge, Musk initiated mass sackings and wholesale elimination of departments such as the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Doge claims to have saved $180bn, although that number has been disputed, and is well short of Musk's initial aim to cut spending by up to $2tn.

Trump is not interested in talking to Musk as they feud over tax-cut bill
By Nandita Bose

    Summary

White House aides had hoped to have a call between Trump and Musk on Friday
Unclear whether the two will continue hostilities
Musk said he would decommission Dragon spacecraft, then backed off

WASHINGTON, June 6 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is not interested in talking with his former ally Elon Musk, amid a bitter feud over the president's sweeping tax-cut bill, a White House official said on Friday, adding that no phone call between the two men is planned for the day.
A separate White House official had said earlier that Trump and Musk were going to talk to each other on Friday.

"I'm not even thinking about Elon. He's got a problem, the poor guy's got a problem," Trump told CNN on Friday morning.

Trump, the world's most powerful leader, and Musk, the world's richest man, battled openly on Thursday in an extraordinary day of hostilities - largely over social media - that marked a stark end to a close alliance.

Shares in Musk's Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab rose 4.5% when markets opened on Friday. In Thursday's session, the stock dived 14% and lost about $150 billion in value, the largest single-day decline in the electric vehicle maker's history.

Musk bankrolled a large part of Trump's presidential campaign and was then brought to the White House to head up a controversial effort to downsize the federal workforce and slash spending.

The falling-out began brewing days ago when Musk, who left his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency a week ago, denounced Trump's tax-cut and spending bill. The feud is complicating efforts to pass the bill, which is the president's main demand of the Republican-controlled Congress.

Musk has denounced the package, which contains most of Trump's domestic priorities, as a "disgusting abomination" that would add too much to the nation's $36.2 trillion in debt.

The package narrowly passed the House of Representatives last month and is now before the Senate, where Republicans say they will make further changes. Nonpartisan analysts say it would add $2.4 trillion in debt over 10 years.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he has been in touch with Musk.

"I don't argue with him about how to build rockets and I wish he wouldn't argue with me about how to craft legislation and pass it," he said on CNBC.

'VERY DISAPPOINTED'

Trump had initially stayed quiet while Musk campaigned to torpedo the bill, but broke his silence on Thursday, telling reporters he was "very disappointed" in Musk.

"Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore," he said.

The pair then traded barbs on their social media platforms: Trump's Truth Social and Musk's X.

"Without me, Trump would have lost the election," wrote Musk, who spent nearly $300 million backing Trump and other Republicans in last year's election.

Musk also asserted that Trump's signature import tariffs would push the U.S. into a recession and responded "Yes" to a post on X saying Trump should be impeached. That would be highly unlikely given Trump's Republicans hold majorities in both chambers of Congress.

Trump, for his part, suggested he would terminate government contracts with Musk's businesses, which include rocket company SpaceX and its satellite unit Starlink.

Musk, whose space business plays a critical role in the U.S. government's space program, responded that he would begin decommissioning SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft, which is the only U.S. spacecraft capable of sending astronauts to the International Space Station. He backed off the threat later in the day.

In a sign of a possible detente, Musk subsequently wrote: "You're not wrong" in response to billionaire investor Bill Ackman saying Trump and Musk should make peace.

A prolonged feud between the pair could make it harder for Republicans to keep control of Congress in next year's midterm elections if Musk withholds financial support or other major Silicon Valley business leaders distance themselves from Trump.

Musk had already said he planned to curtail his political spending, and on Tuesday he called for "all politicians who betrayed the American people" to be fired next year.

His involvement with the Trump administration has provoked widespread protests at Tesla sites, driving down sales while investors fretted that Musk's attention was too divided
