Bomber Outside Pakistan Bank Kills at Least 30
Nov. 2: Pakistani policemen secure the site after a homicide bomb blast in Rawalpindi.

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan —  A homicide bomber killed 30 people outside a bank near Pakistan's capital Monday, while the U.N. said spreading violence in the country had forced it to suspend long-term development work in the northwest regions along the Afghan border.

Islamist insurgents have carried out numerous attacks in Pakistan in recent weeks, killing some 250 people in retaliation for an army offensive in the Pakistan Taliban stronghold of South Waziristan. The bloodshed, some of which has targeted aid workers, has imperiled Western goals of reducing extremism's allure by improving Pakistan's economy.

Monday's explosion in Rawalpindi, a garrison city just a few miles (kilometers) from Islamabad, left bodies on the ground outside the bank and in a nearby hotel parking lot, witness Zahid Dara said. The stricken area also lies close to the army's main headquarters.

"I was nearby and rushed toward the parking area," Dara told Dunya television. "There were many people lying on the ground with bleeding wounds, and a motorcycle was on fire with one man under it."

The attacker rode a motorbike to the scene, and the 30 people dead included military personnel, Rawalpindi police chief Rao Iqbal said. Some 45 others were wounded.

"The bodies were lying all over," said Ali Babar, a rescue official who was doing a refresher course at a nearby college and rushed to the scene to help. "This is a terrible thing. It is happening again and again."

Pakistan's president, prime minister and other top officials condemned the blast but vowed to continue the offensive in South Waziristan, an impoverished and underdeveloped tribal region next to Afghanistan where Al Qaeda is believed to have hideouts.

The U.S. supports the operation because it believes South Waziristan is a safe haven for Islamist extremists involved in attacks on Western troops in Afghanistan.

Washington has also stepped up its efforts to use development aid in a broader battle against spreading militancy. The U.S. government recently approved $7.5 billion in aid over five years to improve Pakistan's economy, education and other nonmilitary sectors.

The U.N. decision to suspend long-term development work in Pakistan's tribal areas and its North West Frontier Province could complicate Washington's goal.

The U.N. made its decision after losing 11 of its personnel in attacks in Pakistan this year, including last month's bombing of the World Food Program's office in Islamabad that killed five people.

U.N. workers were also among the 11 killed in a June suicide bombing of the Pearl Continental Hotel in the main northwest city of Peshawar, and a veteran U.N. official was shot dead while resisting kidnappers at a northwest Pakistan refugee camp in July.

The world body will reduce the level of international staff in the country and confine its work to emergency, humanitarian relief, and security operations, and also "any other essential operations as advised by the secretary-general," the organization said in a statement.

The U.N. has been deeply involved in helping Pakistan deal with refugee crises that have popped up due to army offensives against militants in the northwest.

U.N. spokeswoman Amena Kamaal told The Associated Press that the organization is still determining which programs will be suspended and how many staffers will be withdrawn from the country. She said "long-term development" applied to programs with a five-plus year time frame.

The staff that remains in the country will be assigned additional security, she said.

"We have had 11 of our colleagues killed because of the security situation," Kamaal said. "All of the decisions are being made in light of that."

Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Basit said Pakistan understood the U.N.'s reasoning, but that he hoped the organization would resume its development work after the military completed its operation in South Waziristan.

"We hope that our operation will come to an end soon and they will resume their normal operations," he said.

The Taliban was a creation of Pakistan, not USA. Taliban came on the scene only after the liberation of Afghanistan. That is why Taliban can survive in Pakistan for so long.

Yes sir, I am very clear about that. Taliban came from Pakistan and entered Afghanistan only after the liberation from the Soviets. They were formed from Afghan refugees who were trained and backed by ISI of pakis. Thats why they are able to survive so well in paksitan after being kicked out of afhganistan by NATO.
The pakis are now fighting the monster of their own creation.

The moral of the story? Don't ever back extremists thinking yu can control them for your own agenda. The pakis are now learning it the very hard way.

yep, very sure of that.
the Taliban is dominated by pashtuns. They make up about 15% of the population but threatens the nation and wants to eventually control the whole country with their extremist ideology. Thats why the Pakis have no choice but to eventually eliminate them.  Its a baby that grew up and took an agenda of its own and turned rebellious.

the pakis created them thinking they can use taliban to control afghanistan for themselves.
It made perfect sense at that time. The pakis also wanted to use the taliban as proxy warriors for them in india.
But the Taliban grew in ambition and have plans to swallow up Pakistan itself. Thats why Benazir Bhutto was assasinated. They knew she would become the next PM had she run for elections and they hated the idea of a woman for PM.

Homicide Bomb Kills Anti-Taliban Mayor, 11 Others in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan —  A homicide bomber blew himself up Sunday in a crowded market in northwestern Pakistan, killing an anti-Taliban mayor who had formed a militia to fight the militants and 11 other people, officials said.

A purported Taliban commander claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The Taliban have carried out a series of attacks in recent weeks aimed at pressuring the government to abandon an offensive launched in mid-October in South Waziristan, the main Taliban and Al Qaeda sanctuary in the country.

The bombing, in the town of Adazai, about 10 miles south of the main northwestern city of Peshawar, killed the town's mayor, Abdul Malik, and 11 other people, including a young girl, said Sahibzada Anis, the top official in Peshawar.

The homicide bomber hit as shoppers thronged a market where goats were being sold to celebrate the upcoming Muslim festival of Eid.

Twenty-five wounded people — several in critical condition — were rushed to a hospital, police officer Abdul Sattar Khan said.

Malik, who had once been a Taliban supporter, later switched sides and formed a local militia to help fight the militants.

"Malik had survived several attacks on his life in the recent past, since he turned against the militants," Anis said. "But today the militants have finally killed him."

"Our local fighters carried out this attack," the purported Taliban commander, who gave only one name, Omar, said by telephone from an undisclosed location. "He had set up a militia. He was supporting killings of our men. He was interfering in our matters." Omar, whose identity could not be confirmed, threatened to kill anyone who tried to create an anti-Taliban militia.

Khan Zamir was buying goats when the explosion ripped through the street.

"That place turned into hell where the dead and injured were lying everywhere, and blood and flesh were spread around," he said, adding that two of his relatives were badly wounded.

"Now we have our blood in this war," he said, vowing revenge against the attackers.

Militants have struck repeatedly in Pakistan in recent weeks, killing more than 300 civilians and soldiers in attacks aimed at weakening the government's resolve to continue the South Waziristan operation.

Pakistani troops have fought gunbattles in and around key Taliban towns in the region for several days. The latest fighting Sunday in the Taliban heartland killed 20 militants and wounded eight soldiers, an army statement said.

The military says hundreds of militants have been killed in the fighting — a claim the Taliban dismisses. The area is sealed, and the figures are impossible to verify.

About 350,000 people have fled the fighting.

HIT Al-Khalid Tank

The Al-Khalid is a modern main battle tank developed and manufactured by Pakistan for the Pakistan Army. Operated by a crew of three and armed with a 125 mm smooth-bore tank gun that is reloaded automatically, Al-Khalid uses a modern fire-control system integrated with night-fighting equipment to accurately fire many types of anti-tank rounds as well as guided anti-tank missiles. Al-Khalid is named after the legendary Muslim general Khalid bin al-Walid.

An evolution of Chinese and Soviet tanks, the Al-Khalid is considerably smaller and lighter than most Western main battle tanks. The design is based on the Chinese Type 90-II, which combined technologies from several Soviet/western tanks and is ultimately a descendant of the widely-produced Soviet T-54. The Al-Khalid is unusual in that it is was designed to be adaptable for manufacture, so that it can be easily integrated with a variety of foreign engines and transmissions. The current production variant of Al-Khalid utilises a diesel engine supplied by the KMDB design bureau of Ukraine.

The first production models entered service with the Pakistan Army in 2001 and there are plans to induct approximately 600 in total.

Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL)

http://www.krl.com.pk/

Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL) is a semi-civilian controlled weapon development and nuclear science research laboratoy. KRL is located at Kahuta, Punjab, Pakistan. Kahuta is the site of Pakistan's main nuclear weapons laboratory as well as an emerging centre for long-range missile development. The primary Pakistani fissile-material production facility is located at Kahuta, employing gas centrifuge enrichment technology to produce Highly Enriched Uranium [HEU].

Kahuta was initiated by then-Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto under the stewardship of Lt. Gen. Zahid Ali Akbar. Chinese assistance in the development of gas centrifuges at Kahuta was indicated by the presence of Chinese technicians at the facility in the early 1980s but it is not confirmed. The uranium enrichment facility began operating in 1984, but suffered serious start up problems. Kahuta began producing HEU in 1986, and Pakistan's fabrication of weapons may have begun soon thereafter, with the HEU hexafluoride being made into uranium metal which was machined into weapon pits. By the late 1980s Pakistan began advertising its nuclear potential by publishing technical articles on centrifuge design, including a 1987 article co-authored by A. Q. Khan on balancing sophisticated ultracentrifuge rotors.
