Blaze destroys Servay hypermart
photo Kota Kinabalu: The popular Servay hypermarket in the Penampang Baru was destroyed within three hours in a fire that is believed to have started at a storeroom on the first floor before swallowing the entire building.
Fortunately, except for a fireman, none of the estimated 500 shoppers and staff were hurt in the 7.20pm incident. The cause of the fire as well as the losses had yet to be ascertained.
Some 60 fire and rescue personnel in eight fire trucks from the Sembulan, Lintas and Penampang stations were at the scene after receiving a distress call at around 7.38pm. By around 11pm, most of the upper floor had collapsed in the rubble.
However, Firemen were still controlling the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings. Thirty police personnel led by Penampang police chief, DSP Madang Usat, also rushed to the scene to secure the site, as a crowd numbering close to a thousand had gathered to watch the inferno.
An off-duty Servay staff, Cecelia David, 25, said she was having dinner with her husband at an outlet near the building when she notice smoke coming from a section on the first floor and immediately notified her superiors inside.
Also at the scene were the hypermarket's owners Mr and Mrs K.P Lai as well as the owner of the building. The 78,000 sq. ft Servay Hypemarket in Penampang Baru began operations in 1997 and is believed to be the first hypermarket to be set up in Sabah.
It is understood that apart from some 150 staff at the time, there were also 40 new recruits who were undergoing training before being posted to a branch due to open in Putatan. Also the scene was State Fire and Rescue Director Khirudin Drahman.
