KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- The late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, who was synonymous with the Genting Highlands Resort, came to Malaysia (then Malaya) at the age of 19 in February 1937 from China with just a suitcase in his hand and some money in his pocket.

But over a span of 70 years, this humble Chinese immigrant from Fujian Province, showed extreme tenacity and entrepreneurship to emerge as one of the richest men in the world. With a net worth of US$4.2 billion, he ranked among the top 200 wealthiest persons on Earth in 2006.

His nose for business was exceptional. To put it simply, he knew where the money was. And he built Genting Highlands into a world-class resort.

Starting out as a trainee carpenter under his uncle, he branched out to becoming a building sub-contractor and managed to help build a two-storey school soon after.

After a brief stay in China in 1940, he returned to Malaysia a year later.

Lim survived the Japanese Occupation when he earned a living as a vegetable farmer, petty trader, scrap metal and hardware trader.

He then dabbled in second-hand machinery trading after the Japanese Occupation and made good profits to propel him into iron mining and tin mining.

It was inevitable that Lim entered into construction after all he was surrounded by a lot of heavy machinery.

That laid the foundation for the establishment of Kien Huat Private Limited, the family's construction company, which still stands until today.

And it was Kien Huat that led Lim to undertaking bigger jobs and leading to his vision of the Genting Highlands Resort.

As Lim recalled in his autobiography, it was in 1964 that he had a dream to start another hill resort at Genting Sempah and Gunung Ulu Kali to rival Cameron Highlands as the then relatively unheard areas were nearer to Kuala Lumpur.

With several assistants, he criss-crossed several steep mountains and waded through forests and rivers in the area to ascertain the viability of a hill resort.

Lim recalled: "At the hilltop (of Gunung Ulu Kali), I was so overwhelmed by the surroundings that I forgot my exhaustion. I felt I was floating in the clouds."

That set the stage for the development of Genting Highlands, also popularly known as "Yun Ding" among the Chinese, which aptly and literally means "on top of the clouds".

It was not easy for Lim when he started as he recalled: "At the worksite, I was the labourer, project manager and engineer all in one. I was also the trouble-shooter, doing all kinds of work and tackling all kinds of problems."

Lim also got on well with politicians, starting with "Bapa Malaysia" Tunku Abdul Rahman, the country's first prime minister, who gave him the break to start Genting Highlands.

"It was Tunku's wish in those days to develop Gunung Kali into a hill resort. The fact that I have now accomplished the job means the Tunku also had his wish fulfilled."

Lim recalled that the country's second prime minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, had this to say after he had viewed the surroundings amidst the cool breeze: "Beautiful, just like Switzerland."

Lim said Tun Hussein Onn, the country's third prime minister, supportive of his efforts in developing Genting Highlands, recommended that he be made a Tan Sri in 1979 for his contributions to the nation.

The entrepreneur said he was flattered by what former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said of him on Aug 11, 1990 at Genting Berhad's 25th anniversary dinner.

Dr Mahathir had said: "Genting is really a story of Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, a story of success that is quite unprecedented even in Malaysia, where many people have met with a great deal of success.

"from Tan Sri Lim's achievements you can see that even though a man may be born elsewhere, he can always realise his dreams of building his business empire in Malaysia.

"He has only a limited education background. He does not speak English, converses only in Hokkien and some Malay, yet he had been able to succeed in business -- this was not easy."

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi described Lim as a well-known philanthropist and that his demise was not only a loss to the nation but also to the local business community.

Lim's association with Genting Highlands is best summed up by his own words: "Genting Highlands has enabled me to realise my dream. I am happy to conclude that Genting, which means on top of the clouds in Chinese, has come to represent my humble contribution to the national economy.

"To me, it is a paradise on top of the clouds which Malaysians can be proud of."

aku pun dah baca sejarah awal bagaimana dia mula nak bina genting dulu..... calang calang orang, memang tak mungkin dapat laksanakan pembinaan tu.... kuat kudrat dan semangat dia nih yang elok dicontohi generasi sekarang.....

Lim Goh Tong, who died yesterday aged 90, was a Malaysian billionaire who developed one of Asia's most popular casino resorts, Genting Highlands, on an inaccessible jungle mountain top.

Lim was one of a number of hard-driving Malay-Chinese entrepreneurs who made colossal fortunes as their country developed and prospered.

In 1964 he was a building contractor working on a hydro-electric project at Cameron Highlands
