Flowerhorn History

Flowerhorn History
The history of the Flowerhorn cichlid is relatively short and has its beginning during the second half of the 1990s when breeders in Malaysia crossbreed different fish species and thereby created the Flowerhorn. There has been some crazy theories that Flowerhorn cichlids are the result of cross breeding in the strangest combination.  One such theory was that it was the result of the crossbreeding of a cichlid and goldfish. It is today widely accepted that the Flowerhorn is a product of different south American cichlids and that it most likely has it roots in Trimac cichlid (Amhilophous Trimaculatus) which has been crossbreed with other cichlids from the region like Midas cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellum), Red Devil cichlid (Amphilophus labiatum) and Redheaded cichlid (Vieja synspila).

The truth can very likely be that different strain of Flowerhorn cichlid has different cichlids in their genetic history. The exact ways to develop these strains are well guarded business secret among those who first developed these fish.

Flowerhorn cichlids fast become very popular in Asia since they where believed to bring luck. This made Flowerhorn prices to raise and specimens with especial good luck bringing qualities good sell for many thousands dollar and some reached prices above 100 000$. People traded Flowerhorn cichlids as you trade stock during some time while the hysteria was at is peak. The market did however as you might expect collapse and a lot of people got ruined when their expensive Flowerhorn investments lost their inflated value. Good specimens of Flowerhorn fish can  still today bring in very high prices but nowhere near the prices they ones use to be worth.

There has also been much controversy surrounding the Flowerhorn cichlids as many people believe that you shouldn抰 create crossbreeds. This critic has lessened from its peak but there are still a lot of people that despise Flowerhorn cichlids and other fish that has been developed for the aquarium trade by man out of commercial reasons.  This has however never prevented the Flowerhorn cichlid from becoming a popular aquarium fish.

Flowerhorn

The Flowerhorn fish does not exist in the wild. It is a hybrid created in Malaysia during the last years of the 20th century. Exactly which species that were combined in order to form the Flowerhorn fish is still unknown, but it was several different South American cichlids. The secrecy has naturally been a good breeding ground for several rumours regarding the true ancestry of this remarkable fish, and some if the more bizarre theories claim that the first Flowerhorn fish was created in a secret Malaysian genetics laboratory where genes from the South American Trimac cichlid was artificially combined with genes from a Goldfish. More plausible theories suggest that the Flowerhorn fish is the result of selective crossings of several different South American cichlids; most likely intricate combinations of the Trimac cichlid, the Midas cichlid, the Redheaded cichlid and the Red Devil cichlid.

Flowerhorn cichlids can display striking patterns on their body, and these patterns will sometimes resembles letters, numbers and signs. This has made Flowerhorn cichlids extremely popular among followers of the ancient Asian Feng Shui tradition. South East Asia has a long tradition of keeping aquarium fish in order to bring luck and happiness to the home. The Arowana has for instance been kept for centuries since it resembles a Chinese dragon
