Fire smokes out 50 at KLH ward
KUALA LUMPUR: A short circuit in a lift resulted in a minor fire in a Kuala Lumpur Hospital ward, forcing about 50 patients and visitors to evacuate.  In the 1.30pm incident yesterday, a lift on the first floor of the neurology ward caught fire, filling the ward with excessive smoke.  揟hankfully, no one was hurt in the incident,

Hikers lost during hill trek

KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty-five people left early yesterday to go trekking up Gunung Nuang, the hill in Ulu Langat that is used by many as a training ground for scaling Mount Kinabalu and Gunung Tahan. By midnight, nine have not yet returned home.

Worried parent Wong Pan, 59, said he waited at the base at 5pm for his daughter, Mei Soon, 24, to reach down the hill.

However, by press time, the IT staff member of an electronics plant here had still not appeared from the forested hill.

Couple found dead in car

KOTA KINABALU: A couple are believed to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning after their bodies were found along the Penampang-Tambunan road, about 25km from here.

Sabinus Lionson, 27, and his girlfriend Lucia Marasin, 19, were found dead inside their Proton Iswara parked by the side of the road near Kampung Kibunut at about 7.30am yesterday.

Penampang OCPD Deputy Supt Mohd Azhar Hamin said the engine and air-conditioner were still running when the bodies were discovered.  

揥e do not suspect any foul play. We believe they could have suffocated from fume poisoning,

Traffic cop dies in collision with car

KUALA LUMPUR: A policeman returning home after a traffic operation was killed in a collision with a car.

In the 6am incident yesterday, the car driver, believed to be intoxicated, collided with Kpl Ismail Mat, 49, who was on his motorcycle travelling in the opposite side of Jalan Loke Yew near the UE3 shopping complex here.

Kpl Ismail, from the city traffic police headquarters in Jalan Bandar, was dragged under the car for about 20m before the vehicle stopped.  

Initial investigations revealed that the road dividers were removed at that particular stretch for road-widening works.

He was on his way home in Kajang after conducting a traffic operation in Jalan Pinang here.

Kpl Ismail, who had serious injuries on his head, chest and legs, was rushed to Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) where he was pronounced dead two hours later.  

Acting city police chief SAC (I) Zulhasnan Najib Baharuddin, when met at the HUKM mortuary, said the 29-year-old motorist from Cheras, who was heading to the Bukit Bintang area, was nabbed soon after the incident.

Bus driver killed in parang attack

KLANG: A bus driver was killed and his elder brother seriously hurt when eight men armed with parang attacked them in Meru early yesterday.

R. Moorthi, 39, succumbed to slash wounds on his head, chest and arms while Asogan, a 40-year-old scrap metal dealer who had similar injuries, is being warded at the intensive care unit at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital.

One of their friends, Daud Kijai, who was near the stall, said the men came in two cars and attacked the brothers who were having coffee with their five cousins at a stall.

揑t all happened very fast.  

揃oth the brothers who were with their cousins were cornered while the others ran helter-skelter as soon as the men ran towards them,

The newly-launched book on the May 13 racial riots has not been banned, a senior government official said, following yesterday抯 seizure of copies from an outlet of a major bookstore.

Che Din Yusof, secretary of the Publications and Al-Quran Texts Control Department at the Internal Security Ministry, told malaysiakini the authorities are still studying the contents and that a decision would be made 搗ery soon
