Islam in Borneo and its decline

The Legend of Alak Betatar by Mark Leigh as he reveals Brunei folkloric origins
(Muhibah May/June 2000 Royal Brunei's Magazine)
Under Alak Betatar's command his brothers conquered the whole of Borneo and some
neighbouring islands, Brunei became the capital of this new empire.
Alak Betatar embraced Islam and became Muhammad Shah, the first Sultan and founder of Brunei.
>>>>
The question before us is that why did the Sultan finally only retained the small portion
in Brunei of Borneo although it has much oil?
Is it because of Islam that brought about Muhammad Shah's decline in Borneo?

History or God's Story in Borneo

Trace back a bit more,

Borneo was conquered by the person Alak Betatar  before he converted to Islam.

Then gradually, the Island was given away bits by bits to foreigners.

Kalimantan went to the Dutch and in Indonesia Islam is not the national religion.
North Borneo was claimed by the Sulu Sultan from the Sultan of Brunei which was not official
as there was no treaty.  Then NB was also given away by the Islamic leaders Sultan of Brunei and pretender Sulu Sultan to the two foreign traders- Overbeck and Dent.  Pretender Islamic Sulu Sultan never ruled over part of North Borneo.  That was in 1878.

the British people ruled North Borneo until 1946, when NB was made a British colony when there was no official religion although Christianity was prominent.

Sarawak also was given away by the Sultan of Brunei to the Rajah Brooke.  The Christian tradition was very strong during the White rule and even today substantial people there are Christians.

The question here is why did the Islamic ruler had to give away most of the land in Borneo.
Can I find the fault in Islam as Borneo is special for Christianity?

Poor Borneo

We all know that Borneo is almost bald and the island is very ravaged by greedy people.

Is it not to blame the Governments which manage Kalimantan, Sabah and Sarawak?

Can I find the fault in Islam as the deprivation and degradation is getting worse in Borneo?
