Silver Marlin - Autonomous Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV)

Silver Marlin is an autonomous, medium-sized Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) featuring autonomous obstacle avoidance sensors and controls. The vessel is designed for autonomous, over-the-horizon operation, employing various sensors, and weapon systems on patrol, intelligence and littoral warfare missions. Typical applications are Force Protection/Anti-Terror (FP/AT), Mine Warfare (MIW) and Search and Rescue (SAR).

The 10.6 meter long vessel weighs four tons, of which 2.5 tons are payload including electro-optic naval payload and remote-controlled stabilized weapon station and enough fuel to maintain of 24 up to 36 hours missions, at ranges of up to 500 kilometers.

The Silver Marlin is powered by two 315 hp marine diesel engines capable of maintaining high cruising speed of 44 knots (81 km/h). This USV features adaptive boat control to enhance performance in rough conditions and at high speeds. The USV can be monitored from the shore or from naval vessels via common mission control system, linked over satellite communication. The same station can also monitor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Thor vehicle mounted Multi Mission System (MMS) was first demonstrated at DSEi 05, mounted on the ATL Pinzgauer (6x6) cross-country chassis.

Thor comprises a four-missile turret with an integral stabilized sighting system, TV camera and thermal viewer and integrated auto-tracker, providing 24 hour capability. The system mounted the Starstreak High Velocity Missiles (HVMs) in the ready-to-launch position. Starstreak HVM is a laser-guided missile with a maximum speed in excess of Mach 3 and a range greater than 6km. Starstreak is in service with the British and South African armies.



The launcher weighs about 500 kg and can be integrated onto a range of wheeled or tracked vehicles. Preparing for what Thales defines as "force protection" missions; Thor's missile payload is not limited anti-aircraft missiles. The system can carry a mix of missiles, including Hellfire anti-tank laser homing missile, and SPIKE multi-purpose missiles and the South African Ingwe. According to Thales, the system already entered a series of test firing to demonstrate and validate its capabilities. The system can be operated by a single person but the normal crew consists of two - commander and gunner.

As part of the Canadian forces army transformation initiative, the new Direct Fire Squadrons will include Multi-Mission Effect Vehicles (MMEV) based on the modernized and upgraded ADATS anti-tank/air defense systems. The upgrades, to be carried out by Oerlikon Contraves will introduce non-line-of-sight engagement capability and range overmatch against ground and armor targets, improve operational capability within joint forces and coalition environment and improve Canadian point defense capabilities for the homeland protection and defense.

To convert from the tracked ADATS into MMEV, the turret will be updated and install on a new, air-transportable 8x8 wheeled Light Armored Vehicles (LAV) chassis built by General Dynamics land Systems. Fire units will be integrated with new 3D radar and EO/IR target acquisition systems, to better detect and track aerial and ground targets. These modifications will enable the system to engage targets at greater ranges and higher level of confidence, while minimizing the likelihood of fratricide and collateral damage. The system will retain its original ADATS missiles, but could also introduce NLOS missiles, such as a Spike ER. By collaborating with other direct fire elements, such as TOW Under Armor and Mobile Gun System, MMEV will be able to engage targets designated by other elements, including UAVs, while retaining its inherent air defense capability.

Club S submarine launched cruise missile family, includes the 3M-54E1 anti-ship missile and 3M-14E land attack versions, capable of striking land and naval targets from a range of 275km. The missile can be launched from standard torpedo tubes, from depth of 35 – 40 m' (130 feet), cruise autonomously along a selected flight trajectory and, at a speed of 240 m/sec, at an altitude of 20 meters (70 feet), and when approaching the target, drops to a sea skimming level of 5 – 10 meters (20 - 30 feet).

The missile is equipped with a 400kg (880 pound) warhead. One of the key elements in the effectiveness of the new Club S is its active radar seeker, the Args 14e designed by Radar MMS of St. Petersburg. This 40 kg system radar system is employed in the terminal phase, less than 20km ahead of the target, to provide target detection, selection and guidance. The seeker is designed for high resistance to ECM, and is designed to operate as a single missile or in salvos firing.

Russia is promoting the Amur-950 (Lada class) diesel electric submarine, armed with the Club-S cruise missile system capable of hitting underwater, surface and land targets.

The new airmobile mortar combat system based on the Rheinmetall Defense Wiesel 2 tracked weapons carrier was shown for the first time at Eurosatory 2006. The complete system, including mortar carrier, reconnaissance and command vehicles were on display. The system is air transportable as a sling load underneath a CH-53 or in a C-130 or C-160 aircraft. The mortar carrier is equipped with externally mounted mortar firing standard or specially developed ammunition reaching a range of up to 8 km. The armored, NBC protected vehicle has accommodation for a crew of three. It has a three-dimensional positioning and heading system enabling autonomous operation.



The mortar barrel laying system uses automatic compensation to correct barrel laying after each shot. Up to three rounds can be fired within 20 seconds of receiving the firing order. The unit operates a two-vehicle command and control element called Joint Fire Support Team, (JFST), equipped with an extendable surveillance system, comprising a high-resolution CCD camera, a 3rd generation FLIR, laser pointer and rangefinder for tactical reconnaissance operations.



The system uses Wiesel 2 platforms, configured as combined reconnaissance / fire support elements to support the air-mobile mortar units. The target acquires target locations and imagery by employing on-board sensors, elevated on a telescopic mast, which will be augmented in the future by a range of unmanned air and ground sensors. Target data is constantly relayed to the company HQ, platoon leaders and the JFST via wireless datalinks, also used for the exchange of information with higher sources. The Wiesel 2 reconnaissance vehicle is also equipped with a laser designator, enabling it to operate as a forward observer and forward air controller, illuminating targets for laser guided munition

Developed under cooperation between Rheinmetall Defense, MBDA and Thales, the Franco-German MMSR-SYDERA consortium is developing a system consisting of various vehicles for detecting and detonating landmines and IEDs.

MMSR SYDERA program will demonstrate how a single system can create a mine-free path as well as clearing a large area, such as an airfield, from hazardous mines. The demonstrator has been completed and is ready to begin trials in Germany, with operational evaluation planned for 2007. Full scale development is expected to start in 2009.

The system will include five vehicles. The command and control vehicle (CCV), developed by Thales, will be traveling behind the group, remotely controlling the system's decoys, and counter-mine vehicles traveling in front. These will include MBDA developed Smart Decoy Vehicle (SDV) and Heavy Decoy Vehicle (HDV), based on the SOUVIM-2 currently operational with the French Army. SDV travels at 20 kph, detonating all types of non-pressure sensitive mines. The HDV will be an articulated vehicle, specially designed to clear pressure-sensitive mines covering routes up to 4.5 meters wide.
The system will also comprise two unmanned systems developed in Germany by Rheinmetall Land Systems - the Detection Vehicle (DEV), Verification Vehicle (VEV) clearing the remaining mines.

Dedale magnetic decoy device can activate magnetically fused mines at a safe distance from the carrying vehicle. A battery of six Dedale decoys mounted in front of the tank's maintain a safe arc up to three meters in front of the vehicle. Magnetic signatures are pre-programmed into the Dedale during mission planning, to ensure that the decoy is effective even against the most sophisticated mined. Dedale is also used with other mine clearing systems, including the EBG mine clearing tank.

Adeve is a lightweight magnetic decoy transmitting a vehicle's magnetic signature at a distance of four meters ahead and to either side of the vehicle. The system is based on the Demeter system and can be activated or deactivated from the vehicle, and can be used on light vehicles.

Air crews flying U.S. Army helicopters are using the Air Warrior aircrew ensemble, providing advanced life support, ballistic protection and Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) protection. Over 10,000 kits have been fielded. Currently used are the Block 1 systems, incorporating micro-climate cooling system, integrated survival gear and ballistic protection, improved over-water survivability and lightweight NBC protection.

Further improvements are included in Block 2 upgrades, featuring an electronic data manager and aircrew wireless intercom system (Air Warrior will use Telephonics' TruLink which has also been used with the Mounted Warrior program). Block 3 upgrades, currently at the early development phase, will incorporate improved situational awareness and survivability, enabling total transparency between day and night under full NBC (MOPP 4) environment. Further enhancements could also include
cockpit installed crash protection airbag systems. The micro-climate cooling system maintains an air flow of cool air into a garment worn by the soldier directly against the skin. The air flow effectively dissipates body heat even at high ambient heat or sealed conditions (NBC protection). In 2005 500 of these micro-climate systems, developed by Foster-Miller, were modified to provide cooling for HMMWV crews in Iraq.

The XM307 Advanced Crew-Served Weapon (ACSW) 25mm system will replace current crew-served weapons such as the M-19 Mk3 40 mm grenade launcher, and heavy M2 0.5" machine guns in US Army. ACWS is developed as the next-generation mounted and dismounted machine gun that will provide accurate long-range firepower, including air-bursting munitions, in a lightweight system package.

The new weapon and family of 25mm ammunition will increase firepower effectiveness by extending stand-off range, enabling the defeat of defilade targets, providing day and night capability and reducing combat load. The lightweight, two-man portable, crew-served weapon system will fire new family of lightweight 25-mm high-explosive ammunition including HE, HEAT and thermobaric grenades.

The sentry robot is equipped with two cameras, one for day-time and one for infrared night vision, zooming capabilities, a speaker for notifying the intruder of inpending death, sophisticated pattern recognition to detect the difference between humans and trees, and a 5.56mm machine-gun.

The robots, co-developed between Samsung and Korea University, are expected to sell for $200,000 USD and will be available late in 2007. The South Korean government plans to deploy these friendly reminders on the border between South and North Korea, to further ease relations between the countries. Or, maybe it's the othe way around.

The robot is fitted with EO and acoustical sensors and is designed to operate at the tactical level. The robot uses a mast mounted omni-directional acoustic sensor, enabling location and tracking of detected signals with stereo acoustic capability, enabling effective spatial reconstruction of the signal. Utilizing a dual datalink for command and transmission of data and video, enables the Foxbot to operate autonomously over a range of 1,000 meters.
