JK's Digest no 10 of December, 06 [342 of 2006]BBEC5

Thanks JICA, Sabah Government and UMS.

What do I learn from asking questions at all the sessions I attended at Bornean Biodiversity Ecosystem Conservation's 5th International Conference held on 6 and 7 December 2006 at Kota Kinabalu?

A lot and  I would give a good summary of that in my next book - World Oxygen Network (WON).

But I happened to eat attap chee for the first time as identified.  (see article below).
Joshua Kong (proponent of MIGS and WON)

I survived on attap chee
PENANG: Her first words were: "Aku dari Aceh (I am from Aceh)", which stunned her rescuers because they had found her at sea, 100 nautical miles (185km) out from where she last stood five days earlier.
The crew of the Hoom Xiang 8, a Malaysian-registered fishing vessel, immediately radioed the Batu Maung port authorities here of the rescue of Malawati of Kampung Denon in Banda Aceh.
Of the many stories of how victims of the Dec 26 earthquake and tsunami survived, hers is perhaps one of the most awe-inspiring and incredible.

Biodiversity Offers Huge Career Potential

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- The government is encouraging young Malaysians to take up careers in biodiversity as the country is facing a serious shortage of experts in the field, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid.

He said the shortage had resulted in the lack of documentation of research being done in that area of science.

Among others, the country was faced with a shortage of taxonomists, botanists, ecologists, biotechnologists and geneticists, he said when launching a book titled "How High Does the Hornbill Fly-Careers in Biodiversity and Environmental Management" here, Thursday.

Azmi said such a problem had stifled efforts to better utilise the nation's biodiversity resources and potential.

"For instance, taxonomists. Their valuable skills are much needed to identify the variety of flora and fauna species for our National Biodiversity Inventory," he added.

Azmi said concerted efforts were needed to encourage more young people to take up careers in this field and to ensure that there would be adequate highly qualified human resources to investigate, manage, sustain and conserve the rich biodiversity.

"We must have the best manpower in order to patent and commercialise products and ideas.

"I am confident that the book will not only help to instill awareness about the importance of managing and conserving biodiversity amongst young Malaysians but also encourage them to consider careers which will impact positively on the nation's biodiversity," he added.

The book is a collaboration between the ministry, BP Asia Pacific Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, British Council, WWF-Malaysia and other environmental groups.

Among others, it recommends 22 careers in biodiversity that could be pursued.
