NPO Saturn Developing Two Aircraft Engines Simultaneously for Future Fighters

Source: 29.09.06, AviaPort.RU, Correspondent: Dmitriy Kozlov

The Saturn Scientific Production Association (NPO) (Rybinsk, Yaroslavl' Oblast') is developing future aircraft engines simultaneously in two directions, an informed employee at the company has declared.

According to him, the first direction is the upgrade of the AL-31F series-built engine, the second is the creation of a completely new aircraft engines of the next generation.

The specialist noted that the completely new engine is being created for the purposes of installing it on the airplane being developed by OAO Sukhoy OKB, the lead developer on the future tactical aircraft aviation complex (PAK FA) program.

At the same time, the 117S engine being upgraded, as the experts think, will be installed originally on the PAK FA during the creation of the new generation "5+" engine. Besides that, it will be installed on generation "4+" airplanes. "The 117S aircraft engine being created is intended mainly the export variant of the Su-35 fighter and the realization of the upgrade of the Russian air force fleet of Su-27," he specified.

The upgrade is being performed by the successive build-up of the AL-31F characteristics and perfection of its design. "The upgrade of the series-built AL-31F is being performed with maximum consideration of the scientific and technical reserve and the design operating hours on the AL-41F engine which was being created for the multirole fighter under the MFI program," the source said.

The 117S engine was able to raise maximum thrust from 12.5 to 14.5 tonnes in flight tests that took place on an Su-27M airplane (T10M-10). A new fan ((VENTILYATOR)) with the diameter increased from 905 millimeters to 932 millimeters, new high and low pressure turbines, a new digital control system and a vectored thrust system were used on the engine.

((VENTILYATOR also may be translated as "rotor"))

News from TsAGI: (to RIA NOVOSTI)

"TsAGI's services are used not only by European aircraft manufacturers, but also by the U.S. company Boeing (which tested its Boeing-767 here), Indian HAL, which tested a model of its LCA light fighter jet, Brazilian Embraer-170 and Embraer-190. Currently the Institute is testing a Chinese aircraft whose name and details are kept secret. The tunnel has been used on four models of the T-50 fifth-generation Russian jet fighter, or PAK FA, which means the advanced system for front-line aviation, and other projects not reported in the press. "All this is evidence," Kargopoltsev said.."..

Construction of First Fifth Generation Fighter Begins

The Novosibirsk Chkalov Aviation Production Association (NAPO) has begun construction of the fifth generation multirole fighter. This work is being performed at Komsomol'sk-on-Amur together with the aircraft plant at Komsomol'sk-on-Amur, the enterprise's general director, Fedor Zhdanov, reported today during a visit to NAPO by Novosibirsk Oblast governor Viktor Tolokonskiy.

"Final assembly will take place at Komsomol'sk-on-Amur, and we will be carrying out assembly of the fore body of this airplane," Zhdanov specified. The fifth generation fighter which will replace the MiG-29 and Su-27 airplanes of the previous generation, was developed by the Sukhoy design bureau.

NAPO Chkalov also has been realizing series construction of the newest Su-34 multirole bomber since last year. According to the governor, the oblast's government will adopt a complex of measures for supplemental governmental support to NAPO in the very near future. As of today, the most severe problem at the enterprise is personnel. In the 90s, many highly qualified workers were let go under the conditions of a slump and now time is needed for training new ones. "Our assistance will be in the resolution of personnel questions, and also in the provision of lodging for the enterprise's specialists," Tolokonskiy said in this connection.

NAPO Chkalov is one of the country's largest airplane building enterprises and is included in the Sukhoy Holding Company, ITAR-TASS notes.

Picture: Russian Sukhoi T-50 fighter images emerge
By Vladimir Karnozov

Powerplant maker's website reveals snapshot of possible configuration of fifth-generation PAK FA combat aircraft

Russian engine manufacturer NPO Saturn's website has provided what appears to be a first glimpse of Russia's fifth-generation fighter under development as part of the PAK FA project.

NPO Saturn has been selected to supply engines for the Sukhoi T-50, which won the Russian ministry of defence's tender over a rival submission from RSK MiG.

The simplified image of the T-50 shows it to be a twin-engine design with a classic aerodynamic layout resembling the Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor. However, its smaller horizontal and vertical control surfaces reflect the fact that the aircraft is expected to use vectored thrust for pitch, yaw and roll control.

The engine nozzles in the picture resemble those of the NPO Saturn Item 117A development engines revealed at the 2005 Moscow air show. Derivatives of the long-serving AL-31F, the powerplants have been redesigned with a new high-pressure compressor and higher-temperature turbine, to support an increase in reheated thrust.

The T-50's high thrust-to-weight ratio, coupled with vectored thrust, are designed to improve short-field performance, including operations from 300-400m (1,000-1,300ft) runways.

Sukhoi general designer Mikhail Pogosyan says the PAK FA falls between the Su-30 and smaller MiG-29, but "closer to the bigger aircraft". This suggests a take-off weight of 25-30t.

It is designed to carry weapons internally and be capable of supercruising (supersonic cruise without reheat), which requires a move away from the Su-30's "integral triplane" configuration to classic aerodynamics better suited to supersonic flight.

Earlier this month the T-50 passed its technical mock-up inspection, says deputy commander of the Russian air force and chief for aviation, Gen Aleksandr Zelin. "The PAK FA must fly in 2012," says Zelin. "The timeframe set earlier remains valid. We are working to complete the work on time."

Sukhoi says it is completing T-50 drawings with a view to producing the aircraft at the KnAAPO and NAPO production plants. KnAAPO will lead the industrial phase, with NAPO a major supplier. NAPO general director Fiodor Zhdanov says his plant will make the nose section. "The airplane will have many parts made of carbon plastic," he says.

i really do hope the PAK-FA projects comes through..and i strongly support us going into the project seriously if proven feasable.i'm quite confident the project will eventually pull through as a lot of work has already gone into it.
and i bet Russia won't want to be left behind seeing as to how the US and the Europeans are racing ahead with their various fighter projects.
