JSDF F-2B Fighter Explodes at Nagoya Airport

A Japanese fighter jet crashed an instant after takeoff and went up in flames Wednesday at an airport in central Japan, leaving the two pilots with minor injuries, an official for aircraft抯 manufacturer said.

The F-2B fighter was on a test flight prior to delivery to Japan抯 air force when it crashed, said Hideo Ikuno, a spokesman for the Daiya public-relations firm representing the plane抯 maker, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Footage on commercial broadcaster TV Asahi showed the jet taking off from the runway in Nagoya, only to suddenly tip downward and skid along the ground in flames. National broadcaster NHK showed the pilots jumping from the burning plane.

Kapal tentera, bot nelayan berlanggar

"Ia pasti membangkitkan persoalan penting mengenai Aegis."

BAE in talks with Mitsubishi

BAE Systems, Europe's biggest arms manufacturer, is in discussions to license the manufacturing of the Euro璮ighter jet to Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy if the aircraft wins an export competition worth tens of billions of dollars.

A purchase of the Euro璮ighter Typhoon would signal a watershed for Japan, which until now has bought fighters only from the US, its closest military ally.

But there is a growing sentiment among bureaucrats and politicians that Japan should collaborate more with European companies in order to have better access to cutting-edge technology.

Nigel Whitehead, group managing director of BAE's military air solutions, said yesterday that Japan had this year expressed an interest in buying a European fighter for the first time.

"There is a sense of lost opportunity within the Japanese defence forces in the nature of the collaboration programmes they could be involved in beyond the confines of their relations with the US," Mr Whitehead told the Financial Times.

But analysts say cosying up to the Eurofighter consortium could be a ploy to press the US on price and access to highly sensitive technology. Japan's air force wants to buy the F-22 Raptor, built by Lockheed Martin, but current US law prohibits its export.

Tokyo is also considering Lockheed's F-35 Lightning II, which is already on order with a number of foreign air forces, including the UK and Italy. Tokyo will also assess Boeing's F-15 Eagle and F-18 Hornet.

BAE is in discussions with Mitsubishi Heavy (MHI) about a progressive licence manufacturing agreement, Mr Whitehead said. "The idea is that we would transfer the ability to manufacture the aircraft to [Mitsubishi] and they could have the ability to upgrade and develop the aircraft themselves."

A delegation from Mitsubishi, which declined to comment last night, and the defence ministry travelled to the UK earlier this year to see the Typhoon's production site. Japanese pilots also tested the Typhoon, made by a consortium comprising BAE, EADS, the Franco-German defence group and Italy's Finmeccanica.

Japan needs to replace its fleet of 90 F-4 Phantoms, which went into service in 1971, and also plans to retire 200 F-15 fighters. The defence ministry is understood to be studying all available options and will make a final decision by early next year. The procurement deal could run to tens of billions of dollars.

The attraction of the Typhoon is that Mitsubishi

Boeing Delivers First KC-767 Tanker to Japan

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 19, 2008 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] today delivered the first Japan KC-767 Tanker to the Itochu Corp., for Japan's Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). It is the first aerial refueling aircraft in Japan's history.

"The KC-767 will have an immediate impact and significantly increase Japan's capabilities," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. "This delivery also confirms Boeing's standing as the world's leading provider of aerial refueling tankers and continues our company's proud 75-year history of producing tankers."

The 12-hour non-stop flight to Gifu, Japan, near Nagoya, originated in Wichita, Kan., near Boeing's tanker modification center, following a final review by Japan Ministry of Defense (MoD) Air Staff. Itochu will deliver the KC-767 Tanker to the MoD following in-country acceptance processes.

Japan has ordered four convertible freighter 767s, providing flexibility in carrying cargo or passengers while maintaining its primary role as an aerial refueling tanker. It features Boeing's advanced aerial refueling boom and Remote Aerial Refueling Operator (RARO II) system. Boeing will deliver the second Japan tanker immediately following acceptance of this first Japan delivery.

Additionally, Boeing is building four tankers for Italy with delivery of the first two aircraft planned in 2008. The KC-767 also is Boeing's offering in the U.S. Air Force's KC-X competition for its next-generation tanker aircraft. Since the 1930s, Boeing has built and delivered more than 2,000 tankers that feature the world's most advanced aerial refueling method with the highest fuel transfer rate available.
