Medium T-9 Dozer (D-7)

D7G Mine-Clearing/Armor Protection (MCAP) Bulldozer

The crawler tractor, commonly referred to as a dozer or bulldozer, is the basic item of earthmoving equipment for heavy dozing and clearing. The tractor is equipped with a power-shift transmission and a hydraulically operated semi-U-type dozer blade with a tilt cylinder and a rear-mounted winch or ripper.

The medium T-9 dozer (commonly referred to as a D-7) has an operating weight of 50,000 pounds of drawbar pull. Due to the low ground bearing pressure, the crawler tractor has the capability of working in adverse underfoot conditions and is normally the first piece of construction equipment on a job site. The tractor is used to perform dozing, rough grading, cutting and filling, and ripping and towing in support of general engineering tasks.

The D7 is a fully tracked, low speed, medium drawbar pull bulldozer with a ripper or winch. It is used by engineer units. The rebuild program, which brings the vehicles back to their original performance specifications, is expected to extend the service life by 15 years and will yield cost savings over a new acquisition.

The D7G mine-clearing/armor protection (MCAP) Bulldozer was engineered by Caterpillar Diesel for the U.S. Army to fulfill mine and UXO clearing requirements during Desert Storm. It proved effective and is in use in the Balkans today. The D7 MCAP is a D7G bulldozer with steel plate and bullet resistant glass armor additions. The armor was added to a D7G Caterpiller Dozer by cutting plywood templates prior to fabrication of the steel plates. The versatile D7 MCAP is capable of mine/UXO clearing purposes in uneven, light or heavily vegetated terrain. The operator must carefully remove mines and soil with the blade. The dozer chassis and armor is robust and protects the operator from potential blasts. It can work where many other mechanical mine clearing equipment cannot. When working on soft ground, it is advisable to have a second armored dozer as a "pusher" in case of lack of traction. The D7G MCAP cannot neutralize mines or unexploded ordnance. Rather, it exposes such materials during the dozing process. Unexploded Ordnance personnel are necessary for mine and unexploded ordnance neutralization procedures.

The D7 MCAP is dependable, versatile, and effective. It requires minimal maintenance. Many of its parts are available through U.S. military supply systems as well as through Caterpillar抯 worldwide parts network. The D7G Bulldozer is a common item in the U.S. Army, and the D7 MCAP is a relatively simple modification to an existing, engineer "work horse."

The T-9 Dozer tractor shall be diesel engine driven, full tracked, low speed, with medium draw bar pull. The tractor shall be capable of completing construction and earthmoving tasks. These tasks include, but are not limited to moving, dozing and ripping earth to perform both road building and site preparation functions, construction and repair of logistical facilities, roads, helipads and airfields. The tractor will be equipped with a semi-U (straight) type blade with hydraulic tilt. The tractor shall have maximum drawbar pull in excess of 72,000 pounds, 35,000 pounds at a speed of not less than 1.4 mph, and 22,000 pounds at a speed of not less than 2.0 mph. These drawbar pulls shall be reserve tractive force as defined in SAE J872. All attachments will be hydraulically controlled. The vehicle shall have a Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS). Two types of tractors based on the same commercial model are required. The Type I shall include a ripping bar equipped with 3 shanks capable of depths of not less than 24 inches. The Type II tractor shall be equipped with a rear mounted winch with a capacity of at least 50,000 pounds at a line speed of not less than 80 feet per minute. The tractors shall be capable of air transport by C-130 with removal of some components.

The JAMC program focuses on clearing mines from the shallow water mark up to a cleared landing zone for landing craft. The vehicle used for this application is the D7G dozer fitted with a mine rake, magnetic signature duplicator, explosive net array, pathfinder clear lane marking system and a towed chain array. This system also uses GPS-based navigation to control the vehicle's route and map the area cleared. JAMC is being developed by the USMC.

Occupation Officer Killed and 4 Soldiers Injured in an Ambush inside the Gaza Strip

In the first anniversary of the occupation army redeployment from the Gaza Strip, the occupation army reminds the world that the occupation of the Gaza Strip continues, and that Palestinian resistance persists in confronting its aggression. Over the past three months, occupation army has been conducting land raids inside the Gaza Strip. In addition, the occupation army did not cease aerial and artillery bombardment of Gaza since the redeployment on September 12, 2005. Over the past year hundreds of Palestinians have been killed by the occupation army.

On the eve of the first anniversary of the redeployment, Ezzedeen Al-Qassam Brigades and Naser Salah E'Deen Brigades set up an ambush against an occupation army force attacking east of Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. Two mujahideen conducted the operation, which resulted in killing an occupation army officer and injuring 4 other soldiers. The mujahideen confiscated some of the officer's possessions as evidence of the operation to force the occupation army to declare its losses. This operation comes as a part of the "Faithfulness of the Free" campaign against the occupation assault on the Gaza Strip, and the continued targeting of innocent Palestinian civilians and their installations.

End in Sight for Merkava Tank
21:35 Sep 28, '06 / 6 Tishrei 5767
by Hana Levi Julian

Billions of dollars and 37 years later, the Merkava tank production line will be phased out over the next four years. Thousands of workers will be affected by the change.

The Merkava has been one of the most expensive projects in the history of the Israeli military, with estimated costs ranging from US $ 7.5 billion to US $10 billion since its conception in 1969 by Major-General Israel Tal.

Thousands of Israelis are employed in production plants and other related military industries that are involved in manufacturing the tank. It is not yet clear how the shutdown will impact the economy. It is certain that many workers will lose their jobs and primary source of income.

According to the Globes business news website, the IDF made the decision to end production of the tank shortly before the recent war with Hizbullah terrorists in southern Lebanon broke out. Although the Merkava has enjoyed a reputation for years as being the safest tank in the world, it proved vulnerable to the new, advanced Russian-made anti-tank missiles used by Hizbullah. During the war, 47 tanks were hit by rockets and two were destroyed by roadside bombs, resulting in the deaths of 33 IDF soldiers.

Defense officials are currently debating whether the tank is still useful altogether in modern-day ground warfare, having been designed primarily for classic tank-on-tank battles. The cost-benefit ratio over the years has been questioned, not only by defense officials, but by others as well.

Israel Uses Sound Technology on Rioters

Israel Uses Sound Technology Emitting Painful Bursts of Noise to Disperse Riot

By JOSEF FEDERMAN

The Associated Press

Jun. 4, 2005 - The Israeli army on Friday unveiled a new crowd-dispersal device emitting painful bursts of sound at a special frequency to help break up a violent Palestinian demonstration, military officials and witnesses said. Israeli military officials confirmed soldiers used a new "nonlethal" tactic in the West Bank village of Bilin, where hundreds of demonstrators rallied against Israel's separation barrier.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity under army regulations, said the weapon uses special frequencies to disperse crowds. No further details were immediately available.

An Associated Press photographer said a military vehicle arrived toward the end of the demonstration, which lasted several hours and became violent at times.

Located about a quarter mile from the demonstration, the vehicle emitted several bursts of sounds, about one minute in length each time. Although the sound was not loud, it caused people to cover their ears and grab their heads in discomfort
