The Spark is described as a minicar but it is larger than the Perodua Kancil (3495 mm in length and 1495 mm in width versus the Kancil’s 3365 mm and 1405 mm) and about the same size as a Kelisa. It seems likely that as the Kelisa’s Daihatsu ‘relative’ was developed around the same time as the Matiz/Spark, the Koreans may have used that as the benchmark for their minicar. Strangely though, the Spark’s 2340 mm wheelbase is shorter than that of the Kelisa which is 2360 mm, suggesting that cabin length would not be as generous as the Perodua model.

Under the short bonnet is a M-Tech engine with a 796 cc capacity. The proven 3-cylinder SOHC engine with multipoint EFI develops 38 kW/52 bhp at 5900 rpm and 69 Nm of torque at 4600 rpm. Only a 5-speed manual gearbox will be available initially and this delivers power to the front wheels.

Spark’s top speed to be over 140 km/h and its another one of those miserly cars as each litre of fuel can take it 25 kms (70.6 mpg). That’s comparable to the smart fortwo we tested recently so it’s quite an achievement for this little 5-door hatchback. Its fuel tank capacity is 38 litres so that means a range of close to 1000 kms on outstation journeys. At today’s fuel prices, this sure would spark interest in any motorist!

The chassis has simple engineering with independent MacPherson struts in front and a beam axle at the back located by trailing links. 13-inch wheels (4.5J) are used and standard rubber is 155/65R13. For brakes, the Spark has a disc/drum set-up but interestingly, if you are willing to pay extra, you can also have ABS (and it is a factory-fitted type).

The boot is decently sized for a car this size and has 104 litres of usable volume. Fold both rear backrests down and this expands almost 5 times to 512 litres. The floor is flat as the rear seat folds forward to allow the backrests to go all the way down rather than lie on top of the seat at an angle.

Today’s launch of the Spark is only a preview as the car will not be in showrooms till February 2005. Hicomobil has indicated a price of ‘around RM40,000 without insurance’ and understandably, they do not want to be more definite since the new tariffs will be announced by the end of this month and could affect the price they are targeting to sell at. For those who must have an automatic, this will be available during the third quarter of 2005.

taknak tunggu model perodua yg berasaskan design daihatsu boon/toyota passo ke? launch dlm mid next year rasanya. cc spark ni kecik sgt, rasa cam an expensive version of kancil.

al maklum laaa...makcik ni kureng sket bab2 perkembangan keta2 terkini...mesti herge nyer pun mahal lagi....kalo bule makcik nak cari keta yg herge nyer tak lebih dari 40ribu...
