NILAI: Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) will provide transport to send 305 students back to their hometowns in phases for the semester holidays.
USIM deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Associate Prof Dr Mohd Rushdan Mohd Jailani said the first group will leave on Tuesday (July 27).
“The students will be sent home in groups. In total, we will be covering 11 states,” he said in a statement.
He said there were 555 students who had been on campus for the 2020/21 academic year.
Mohd Rushdan said the initiative was taken following a directive by the Higher Education Ministry on July 9 allowing students of institutions of higher learning to return home for the holidays.
He said phase two will start on Aug 17 and the third on Aug 25.
“We had to do it in stages as some of the students have to sit for their final examinations at a later date,” he said.
Students will not be allowed to use public transport to return to their homes. However, those who are flying home will be allowed to do so.
“Students who are not using the transport provided by the university must have their own vehicles to return home,” he said, adding that the students will also be given letters to enable them to travel inter-district or inter-state.
Mohd Rushdan said students who wished to stay on campus during the semester holidays will be allowed to do so.
“On our part, we will ensure their safety and welfare is looked after,” he added.
On July 9, the Higher Education Ministry said students of higher learning institutions will be allowed to return home for the semester break, adding that for the initial phase, only the movement of students who were not subject to the enhanced movement control order would be allowed.
The movement of students in enhanced MCO areas will only be allowed after the ruling is lifted.
For students returning to the Federal Territories of Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak, the cost of the Covid-19 RT-PCR test would be fully borne by the government, while quarantine costs would be borne by the respective state governments.
The ministry said the respective institutes would coordinate the buses used to transport the students home, with strict adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Students would also be allowed to use their own vehicles to travel, while parents or guardians are not allowed to cross state borders to fetch the students.
The semester break will be until October 2021.
