In flashbacks, David leaves the duties of the publisher to his father's trusted associates while living as a playboy in Manhattan. He is introduced to Sofia Serrano by his best friend, Brian Shelby, during a party. David and Sofia spend the night together at Sofia's apartment and fall in love, unaware that David's current lover, Julie Gianni, has followed them there. As David leaves, Julie offers him a ride, and soon reveals her jealousy of Sofia. She purposely crashes the car, killing herself and drastically disfiguring David.

Doctors cannot completely repair David's face using plastic surgery, leaving it scarred and misshapen. David wears a prosthetic mask around others, but the mental and physical scarring from the accident causes him to become withdrawn and depressed.

Take Shelter is a 2011 American psychological thriller drama horror film, written and directed by Jeff Nichols and starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain. The plot follows a young husband and father (Shannon) who is plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, and questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm, or from himself. The film won two Saturn Awards, Best Writing for Nichols and Best Actor for Shannon, and was nominated for two more, Best Horror or Thriller Film and Best Actress for Chastain.

Plot
In LaGrange, Ohio, Curtis LaForche has apocalyptic dreams and visual and auditory hallucinations of rain "like fresh motor oil", swarms of menacing black birds, and being harmed by people close to him. He hides all of this from his wife, Samantha, and their deaf daughter, Hannah. He instead channels his anxieties into a compulsive obsession to improve and enlarge a storm shelter in his backyard; however, his increasingly strange behavior - including a tendency to cut ties with anyone in his life that has harmed him only in his dreams - strains his relationship with his family, friends, employer, and the close-knit town.

Curtis grudgingly sees a counselor at a free clinic, with whom he talks about his family's psychological history. His mother, Sarah, has Paranoid Schizophernia that surfaced in her at about the same age that Curtis is now.

The film grossed $90 million. It received polarized reviews from critics at the time of release, but has since slowly garnered a cult following.

At first only a few of the characters seem to have some psychiatric illnesses but as we go on we can see that each and everyone has a certain psychiatric illness.

Lester and Carolyn Burnham are on the outside, a perfect husband and wife. Lester Burnham's wife Carolyn, who's cheating on him, hates him.His daughter Jane regards him with contempt, and his boss wants Lester to quit his job as he finds Lester of no importance. When one has got nothing to lose, one might as well risk everything. Provoked by pitiful life he had , Lester decides to make a few changes in his life to keep his spirits high. The freer he gets, the happier he gets, which troubles his wife. Fantasies begin after he develops the feeling of lust towards Jane’s beautiful friend Angela. But Lester Burnham is about to learn that the ultimate freedom comes at the ultimate price. Meanwhile, his daughter Jane develops a friendship with a shy new neighbour named Ricky, who lives with a homophobic father.

At first Lester seems to be very patient. He bears everything his wife tells him. He's identified as an under-performer at the office and they want to dump him . He's sexually frustrated but tries to be peaceful. But when things finally seem out of control he becomes rebellious. He smashes his plate on the wall. He even tells his wife “You don't get to tell me what to do ever again!”. This is when he periodically gets out of the passive mode and speaks against his dominant and egoistic wife. This shows that he has a Passive Aggressive disorder.
His wife Carolyn is a real estate sales woman who is very ambitious. She is a very materialistic, impatient and self centered lady. She doesn’t take into account the feelings of anyone, neither her daughter nor her husband. She wants everything to look perfect. She gets irritated if anything looks shabby. She portrays a Narcisstic Personality disorder.

His daughter Jane hates her father and herself. She is disturbed with what’s going on between her parents and her father’s lust towards her friend. She gets embarrassed over her father falling for her best friend who is of her same age. She admits herself that her dad causes a massive psychological damage on her. She has a Borderline Personality Disorder as she feels that she is the victim of her parents and they don't understand her.

She lies about her bed performance in order to impress Jane. After being praised by Lester that she’s very beautiful and she isn’t ordinary she decides to go to bed with him. Later she reveals the fact that she’s still a virgin and really gets embarrassed about it.

He portrays
Schizotypical Personality disorder.

Similarly Brad who is Lester’s boss has Narcissistic disorder. He wants to get rid of slow worker Lester. He even tries to decide who is important and who is not important in the office. He doesn’t look into the fact that Lester has worked there for a long period of time.
Ricky's mom Barbara Fittz has an Avoidant disorder. She stays in home all the time and becomes very cautious when her son leaves the house. She is not very social but she seems to have a mild social phobia disorder.

Fittz who is Ricky’s dad is a protagonist with an exceptionally large gun stock. Fittz gets angry because his son 'has no respect for authority'. He is physically violent and wants his son to respect his authority. Since he was in the marine he’s very strict about rules and regulations. He also projects his unconscious fear of being gay on his son. He believes it is necessary to be disciplined. He periodically checks his son for drugs. He says he would rather wish his son death than gay. However in the end he turns out to be a gay himself. Fittz shows a Paranoid Personality Disorder. He is a homophobic as well.

Kane displays Narcissistic disorder. He pretends to be very successful. He even tells Carolyn that in order to look successful one should project the image of success. Psychological Analysis Of The Butterfly Effect

This paper revolves around the three main psychological aspects of the 2004 movie The Butterfly Effect which are

1_Memory retrieval in Evan,
2_Trauma in thecharacters,
3_and Depression

In the movie The Butterfly Effect a boy named Evan develops a unknown hereditary disease where he blacks out during very traumatic events. These blackoutseventually fade away when we moves away and he never experiences them again. One day, in college he reads an old journal from his childhood and all the oldmemories hit him like a brick. Within days he discovers he is able to actually go back in time and change those past traumatic events, which results in a seriesaltered realities. In these different realities, not only do the events change, but Evan and his friends develop totally new idenities This movie mainly revolvesaround Evan's memory, trauma and depression in some of the characters, and the therapy used to try to treat Evan's illness.

In that brief summary alone you are able to see that Evan's memory is a large part of this movie. Throughout the movies Evan goes through periods of memoryrepressions where he gets these uncontrollable blackouts, usually under times of heavy stress and trauma, and wakes up completely unaware of what happened. These blackouts occurred when he is participating in child pornography, killing a women and her baby, his father trying to kill him and watching his dog beburned alive.
Repressed memories are “memories of actual events that were pushed into the unconscious because they are emotionally threatening (Kosslyn and Rosenberg2011 p.183)”. That means although these events are emotionally charged they are forgotten not because they are pushed out of awareness but because the individual mentally put them into another place in their mind.

The next topic the movie portrays is trauma in the character Lenny. Lenny is most affected by two traumatic events shown in the movie, the first is when heaccidentally blows up a mailbox killing a mother and her baby and the second is when he kills Tommy during one of Evan's interactive memory. After thoseexperiences Lenny develops clear signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The third topic faced in the movie is depression. Kayleigh and Evan go through periods of depression through three different altered realities of the movie. Inthe first altered reality Evan goes back to his hometown and finds Kayleigh working as waitress, in the next altered reality Kayleigh becomes a hooker afterEvan goes back and accidentally kills Tommy, and in the last reality Evan loses his arms and legs along with the love of his life, Kayleigh to Lenny.

The fourmain symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD) shown throughout these scenes were insomnia and tiredness, heavy sadness, feeling of hopelessness, and thoughts of suicide. In the first reality Kayleigh shows physical signs of insomnia and tiredness.
Physically, you can tell by her sluggish movements and heavy bags under her eyesthat she is not getting enough rest. She then goes on to shout at him saying, “nothing's ever going to get better Evan, nothing ever gets better”.This quote andthe fact that she is just a waiter shows the feeling of hopelessness and how she believes there is no real future and she will never be truly happy due to hertraumatizing past. This feeling of hopelessness might have occurred after Evan moved away from her, causing her to have no one else to rely on.

That change can also causedepression because when change occurs, stress happens. “Significant levels of stress can result from any important life change, but people vary considerably inthe ways they respond to change in their lives...Their reactions depend on their resources and the contexts in which stress occurs. If you have the money, time, and friends to help you pick up and go on after adisruption, you will certainly fare better (Mcgregor 2006)”, all of which Kayleigh doesn't have anymore, leading her to developed depression. Kayleigh alsocries and yell at Evan for bringing up old memories, a potential sign of heavy sadness. Finally, Evan finds out the next day that Kayleigh committed suicide,(thoughts of suicide) which is the last symptom of clinical depression.

In the second reality Evan finds Kayleigh in a run down motel room as hooker with a drug addiction. Kayleigh is portraying signs of worthlessness in her bodybecause of the sexual acts she is involved in to receive money. Due the sexual abuse she received from her father she now feels her body is dirty or damagedmaking her believe she in unworthy of being treated as a normal person. This is a big contribution to her low self esteem and her drug abuse issue.

Not only does she feel used but the abuse she suffered from her dad, the first truemale role model in her life, leaves her to feel that people will always hurt her. You can see her environment plays a big role in her depression because in thefinal altered reality, she lives in a nurturing environment with her mother and is finally happy which leads her live to a normal happy life and a better career.

In the final reality Evan loses his arms and legs after trying to save the mom and child from the explosion. During that scene Evan sees Kayleigh run up toLenny and kiss him. You can tell from his facial expression he was feeling sadness and remorse over not being with her when he knows he could be. Afterlosing his arms and legs, Evan realizes life for him is hopeless, and he can never amount to anything because he doesn't have arms or Kayleigh, so that sign ofworthlessness is once again showing.

Evan tries to drown himself in the movie, showing those thoughts of suicide. Evan shows a clear example of Aaron Beck's“negative cognitive triads of depression”.“The triad consists of: a negative view of the world, a negative view of the self, and a negative view of the future (Kosslyn and Rosenberg 2011 p.412)”. Evan views the world as unfair because of his missing limbs, his disability leave him to think his life pointless, and he know his future is nothing without Kayleighand his limbs

In conclusion, you can see that The Butterfly Effect portrays a lot of psychological facts and disorders because of all the traumatic events these young childrenwent through. The biggest aspect of The Butterfly Effect is the different types of memory Evan uses in the movie, like repression, retrieval, and implicit. Themain idea of the movie is that one tiny change can completely alter the future and we clearly see that through the different identity each character goes throughin the movie.
