[Exclusive] UPNM, Enough Is Enough! 8 Seniors Bullying Their Junior?
Less than a year ago, on June 1, Malaysians were left in shock over the death of National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) student, Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain. The naval cadet student became the victim of merciless torture after he was accused of stealing his friend's laptop, and passed away after succumbing to horrific injuries. And just as we thought his case had shone a spotlight on bullying in the country, not just in military institutions but also in schools, unfortunately, another case of bullying or ragging, has surfaced – and sadly involving students from the same higher learning institution. In this recent case, two UPNM students were purportedly bullied by their seniors, which left both victims suffering from shoulder injuries, in which one of the victims was given four days of sick leave by the doctor. Nevertheless, a source notified Malaysian Digest that following the incident, one of the victims, Amirul Nashriq Othman, 19, had 'drowned' at Chamang waterfall in Bentong, Pahang, last Saturday (March 24). In the unfortunate incident, Amirul, along with seven of his friends rented a car and went to the popular recreational spot to bathe at the waterfall. According to the source, Amirul and five of his friends were initially bathing in the shallow area, while two others were mere bystanders. In a turn of events, the group of boys accidentally slipped into the deep end of the river. This prompted the bystanders to swiftly jump into the water to rescue their friends. While the pair managed to rescue five of their friends, they failed to save Amirul. Sadly, Amirul did not make it out of the water as he was unable to swim due to his shoulder injury which was caused by his senior’s monstrosity, and therefore, had drowned that very day. Despite his friends performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Amirul, the teen remained unconscious. And due to the isolated nature of the place that they were at, the group could only call the ambulance and police once they were out of the area – and were forced to carry their friend’s lifeless body with them as well. Shortly after the incident, Facebook page Malaysia Menjerit had uploaded about the incident while stating that based on the deceased’s friends’ postings on the social networking site, there seems to be suspicions surrounding the true nature of Amirul’s death. Questions were even raised whether UPNM had tried to cover-up the bullying Amirul had faced prior his demise. Facebook: Malaysia Menjerit Friends Claim They Know The Real Reason Behind Amirul's Death Based on checks done by Malaysian Digest on social media, a majority of Amirul's friends had expressed their sadness over the Gopeng, Perak-native’s passing. While there were others who also claimed they knew the true cause of it. According to one Twitter user, Amirul’s death was caused by bullying and shared that his friends are trying to seek justice for the deceased. "I know him. For your information, he didn't die from drowning. I know the true story," said the Twitter user, who commented on the tweet posted by one of Amirul’s friends known as Kherul Killmonger. Meanwhile, a handful of Amirul’s friends paid tribute by remembering him for the kind person that he was and expressed how sad they were to see him go. One Facebook user, Zalira Akmal Ariffin shared that Amirul’s post-mortem results revealed that he did not die from drowning. She further claimed that there are ‘certain parties’ trying to cover-up the true nature of his death. "Alhamdullilah the post-mortem results showed that he did not drown. Anyone can tell that it was obviously a cover-up and witnesses who were also there with the deceased on the night he was bullied but was warded, and survived ordeal. We are currently lodging a police report. (May he be safe and protected),” she wrote yesterday (March 27). "I urge everyone to pray for the victim’s parents, Puan Zai and Encik Othman, to be given strength and courage in braving this difficult time. And may those who abused the victim be brought to justice and be punished accordingly," Zalira added, while expressing hope that the sickening bullying culture in UPNM will be put to an end. Family Had High Hopes For Amirul, Says Sister Malaysian Digest tried reaching out to Amirul's sister, Norzulaikha Othman to get further information regarding his death, but to no avail. However, on her Instagram page, Norzulaikha stated that her brother was safely buried at around 1pm, on March 25. "Alhamdullilah Yoi (Amirul's nickname), many of your friends prayed for you Yoi, they sent you off Yoi, all of them wanted to carry you into the grave and bury your remains Yoi, they were with you Yoi. "You must be happy right Yoi, seeing the amount of people wanting to send you off. Rest in peace over there. Wait for us in heaven okay Yoi. Watch your big sister get her degree from there okay," was the sister’s heartbreaking thoughts to her beloved brother. In another tear-jerking post, Norzulaikha who is the eldest sibling stated how her parents had high hopes for her younger brother. "Yesterday night the whole house slept in the same room with mum and dad, before sleeping we hugged and kissed them, gave them strength to go on. They were devastated Yoi, you were their glimmer of hope. "Every time we spoke about you, the tears kept flowing. All of us couldn't sleep soundly, we kept waking up. It was raining heavily at 5am and it woke us all up, and we said 'Alhamdulillah, it'll be cooler for Yoyoi today," she wrote in another post yesterday. Eight Suspects Involved In Amirul’s Bullying Case An insider from UPNM revealed to Malaysian Digest that the bullying incident which involved the deceased and another victim whose identity is kept secret, occurred recently, on March 20. On that Tuesday night, both victims were called to one of their eight seniors' room in UPNM. The suspects are believed to be former Royal Military College (RMC) students. Amirul Nashriq (right)/Photo: Twitter The source added that the first victim, who is currently on sick leave, was forced to enter one of the suspect's rooms first, while Amirul was left to wait outside. All eight suspects then started 'interrogating' the first victim before turning aggressive and beating him up. After they finished thrashing the first victim, the suspects then called Amirul in, and proceeded to repeat their actions. Once the seniors committed their atrocious crime, only then both victims were allowed to leave and return to their rooms. The source further revealed that on March 24, while Amirul went to the waterfall in Bentong with seven of his friends, the first victim did not join them, but instead, stayed in his room. The circumstances behind Amirul's 'drowning' has also sparked questions and forced the police to open up a detailed investigation. According to the source, the police have also called up the first victim to assist in the investigation that is currently underway, as they wish to determine Amirul’s true cause of death, which allegedly stemmed from bullying. Meanwhile, former RMC students have lambasted the actions of all eight suspects, and urged for investigations to be carried out to ensure justice will be served, as well as to prevent more bullying cases in the future. AmBank Islamic vice president, Old Putera (OP) Reizal Amiruddin commenting on the incident said, “As OPs they should know better and lead by example, reflecting "Serve to Lead". Instead, their actions were unbecoming as OPs and have disgraced themselves and their alma mater.” OP Johari Yap meanwhile, labelled the actions of the eight suspects as a disgrace. "As a former Putera from a prestigious military college, this act of torture is a disgrace, especially coming from former Puteras. They were supposed to take care and protect their juniors, not beat them up. "These actions are exactly why new graduates from RMC are embarrassed to be associated with the institution or pride themselves as former Puteras. “Once upon a time every RMC graduate was proud to call himself a former Putera, but it’s no wonder why these days nobody wants to be known as an OP because who knows, they might even get beaten for that very reason,” opined the doctoral candidate from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Dental Sciences. Following these revelations made by our sources, we urge the authorities to thoroughly investigate the case to unravel the suspicious circumstances behind Amirul's tragic death, to ensure that justice is served. If UPNM holds true to their motto 'Duty, Honour, Integrity', we urge for the institution to stop covering up any bullying cases that occur among its students, because torture can lead to death. As the institution should serve the country by putting forth the needs and development of the Malaysian Armed Forces, it is high time for UPNM to put an end to the ragging culture before it further taints their image. How many deaths do we need after Zulfarhan and Amirul’s? Enough is enough."
