last photo of Sabre

This is one of the last photos taken of Sabre, the backward-tusked elephant who was brutally slaughtered for his ivory recently in Sabah, Borneo.

Sabre was a beautiful and docile animal who - perhaps because of his inverted 'weapons' - shied away from confrontation with other elephants.

The SZtv film were documenting the Wildlife Rescue Unit attaching a satellite collar, before releasing him back into the jungle. When he made his way into the thick rainforest, everyone was full of optimism about his future and the valuable data the collar would provide scientists. And now, in this senseless, selfish and barbaric act, this unique, gentle giant is gone.

In Borneo, elephants are dying whilst getting stuck in man-made quarries. They are being shot and poisoned by plantation workers and leaving behind orphaned babies. And now, in this hugely worrying development, they are being targeted for their ivory.

We must all do our part and not let this - and other - elephants die in vain. Only 1,500 of the world's smallest sub-species of elephant remain. Please share widely to raise awareness on the plight of Borneo's elephants.

Over the course of the next year, SZtv will be releasing numerous films on human-elephant conflict, including the piece on Sabre. All films will be shown right here - please keep checking in and following our progress.
