King Geumwa's interview...
src: Star News
Here is King Geumwa's (Jeon Kwang-ryul) interview except from a Japanese Magazine talking about good things about the drama Jumong.
The interview took place an hour before at the hotel where Jeon Kwang Ryul was to meet his Japanese fans. At the time when I arrived at the room which was specially prepared for him nearby the conference hall. He was rehearsing the related matters with his meeting hosts. This time, he listens attentively to the Japanese fans in his real life. Jeon Kwang Ryul proposed his opinion just like he was directing an important scene. After he finished the rehearsal, the interview started. During the interview, he never once let go of the schedule. This made the people know he was really serious about this meeting. Whether it is talking with fans or acting in a movie, Jeon Kwang Ryul took everything seriously. This kind of manner made him become the actor who is liked by everyone.
Q---------Today is the meeting with your Japanese fans, how are you feeling?
I've met many Japanese fans before, but it wasn't like today with so many people. But, probably because of the airplane accident which happened several days ago, quite a lot of people cancelled their trip, it makes me feel disappointed. And I really want to thank the fans still came to attend this meeting despite the accident.
Q---------- "Jumong" is now broadcasting in Japan. Can you tell us what made you take this role?
When I read the script, the role attracted me. A king deeply, deeply in love with a woman. I've to show to the audience the king's joy, anger and sadness. The writer Mr. Koo wrote "The General Hospital" which are well known by many people, I trust him was another reason I took this role.
Q-----------In "Jumong", is the role of King Gumwa very complicated?
King Gumwa must simultaneously display the character with various aspects of emotion, that's extremely difficult. But slightly analyzing his emotion step by step can make people understand.
Q--------- Can you tell us what kind of person King Gumwa is?
I think everyone has both kindness and evil in their hearts, so does King Gumwa. He falls deeply in love with a woman, wants to have her and protect her. But, at the same time he is the King. He has the responsibility to protect his country. Even from his own stepson.
Q---------- By writing "Ho Jun" Mr. Choi Wan Kyu caught many people's eye. What's his world views?
Mr. Choi is a very outstanding writer in Korea. His excels in writing a story that makes people addicted. Each role he creates has uniqueness and three-dimensional characteristics. And also in important scenes, he inserts interesting dialogue. Take an orchestra for example, it needs violins and many other kinds of musical instruments, Mr. Choi is just like a composer who can make each instrument play beautifully. He can also apply the actor's flexible characteristics in the role.
Q---------You must have a lot of invitation to act in many other projects, what are the main points for you to choose which one you want to work in?
Recently, a lot of directors are looking for hot actors for their serial TV drama which doesn't help their ratings. But, in my situation, like "The Youth Trap" ,"The General Hospital", "Ho Jun" etc.. almost none of them have been failure. I think in each drama, the script is very importantly, and also the director's vision. It certainly is not only about the main role. To make the good show, there has to be main roles, supporting roles and many others, all able to mutually coordinate.
Q---------In performing King Gumwa , which part is most difficult?
Just like what I said, King Gumwa was an extremely complex character. How to handle his sentimental change is very important. Once not focused, suspension of disbelief is lost. He has a warm heart and is an outstanding person. And he is quite emotional. So, how to show his two characteristics and to maintain the King's image are the most difficult parts.
Q---------It's a long serial drama, is that hard work?
At the beginning, about a month and a half we went to China to shoot the action scenes. I don't have martial art experience, so
it was really labourious. Another thing was the costume. Gumwa is the King, so his costume must be gorgeous. The embroidery on the cloth is very heavy. In the hot summer wearing the heavy costume is very hard work.
Q--------I heard that King Gumwa's costumes are very expensive?
Yeah!! I heard that they're about 1.5 million won each!
Q--------For the action scene, what preparations do you make??
I've had to learn martial arts and how to ride a horse. I know how to ride horses, but I still have to taking a training course.
Q-------- I heard that in the beginning plan, your role was supposed to be Jumong (meaning he was supposed to play Jumong instead of Song Il-gook).
(Laughing~~~ )
Let's put this in another way. In fact, at the very beginning, their plan was made "Three Hans" (sorry, I'm not sure the drama name is right ~) not "Jumong." And they asked me to play the main role. For some reason, they made "Jumong" instead of "Three Hans". And in "Jumong", the main role of Jumong has to play many action scenes. I didn't think I could make it, so they cast Song as Jumong. That's much better, I think! (smile~) (on a side note Oh Yeon-soo, who played Lady Yoohwa was originally casted as Soseono too...nice to know na naiba yung plan for Jumong's story - but I love both actors...just to think what would have happened if Jumong was not SIG ^ ^ - Dabin)
Q--------In Jumong, you and Song sometimes are close like father and son and sometimes hostile. What do you think of him?
Song is a honest, humble person. You can tell he learned a lot from the other artists . He also is an attentive person. I think if he wants to improve his acting career, he has to travel more, to meet more people. Get more experience. To enrich his life is very important. Those kinds of experience can help him in performing skills.
Q------What do you think of Kim Seung-Soo, he plays the role of King Gumwa's son.
Seung-Soo analyzed Daseo very well. King Geumwa and Daeso both are bipolar characters. Kim Seung-soo described Daeso's emotions very well. He is a good actor.
Q------How's the atmosphere in the shooting studio?
Compared with my other works, I think the atmosphere in between of all the actors and crews in Jumong is the best. I think it is because I'm the leader ( laughs~). And director Lee is a good one. He does not force anyone how to act but guides them. He lets actors portray the role on their own way. In some other drama, the atmosphere in the studio is serious. In Jumong, we are just like a family, we dine together, we talk. So in this good atmosphere, a relationship in between us was developed.
Q------Can you tell who makes the atmosphere good?
Bu who plays Daeso's bodyguard is the one, he always made us laugh.
Q------ In the beginning, the team went to China to shoot the drama. Can you tell us something while you're shooting?
We use a lot of people in China, and almost all of them are Chinese. So, we had problem communicating with them, and that made us spend more time on shooting. And just what I said before, in China we shoot a lot of acting scenes, that's another tough thing. And there was many horse riding scenes, I saw many people fall, that made me worry.
Q------ Did you have any accidents?
No, but I'm not used to the climate, so my skin was really dry.
