Origin of Mermaid : Stories from Around the World.

9. Rusalka

A rusalka is a Slavic mythical creature that looks like a beautiful young woman who lives in water. They are usually small and pale with long hair that is blonde, light brown, or green. Their eyes don't have pupils and if they're evil, the eyes are bright green. Unlike common mermaids, they have legs instead of fishtails.

Originally they were associated with fertility as they would come to land to dance in the moonlight during the spring, which would water the crops and forests. In modern times they are often considered malicious, concentrating on harming people and seducing or kidnapping men. If a human sees them dancing, they will be forced to dance with them until they die.

8. Melusine
Melusine is fabled in France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Albania. She is described as having a human female upper body and the tail of a fish or a serpent. Sometimes she even has two tails or wings. Some stories say that if someone sees her it is an omen of impending death.

The story of Melusine says that she was cursed with a fish or serpent tail which she would wear every Saturday. She lived in the forest until she met Count Raymondin of Anjou (or the Duke of Aquitaine in some versions). They got married, but only after he promised never to enter her room on Saturdays.
They had ten children together and lived happily, until her husband got so curious one day he peeked through her door on a Saturday and saw what she was. He didn't say anything until their one son burnt down the church. Thinking she was evil and had passed this on to their children, Raymondin revealed her secret to the world.
Distraught, Melusine was said to have jumped out a window and into a river to escape. Other stories say she turned into a serpent or dragon and flew away.

7. Chinese Mermaids

This mermaid is called a lingyu or renyu and it has the face of a human with the body of a fish. They make the same noise as a crying baby and have four feet, and some are capable of resurrecting themselves. The text also mentions other types called chiru, diren, and huren.

The jiaoren were described during the Ming Dynasty. These mermaids cry tears that can turn into pearls. They also make silk that is highly coveted. Any man who tries to find and catch one of these mermaids is considered bad, as they are so pure. Ultimately, if he finds one she will lure him to his death by tricking him using a beautiful song.

6. Iara

A Brazilian mermaid came from the Amazon. Her story states that she was the daughter of a spiritual leader of an Amazonian tribe.
She became the fiercest warrior of the tribe and everyone loved her for her kindness and beauty. However, this made her two brothers so jealous that one night they tried to kill her in her sleep. Being the badass she was, she woke up and killed them both immediately. Although it was self-defense, her father was so angry he had her drowned in a river. The fish there took a liking to her and turned her bottom half into a fish-tail, and she has lived there ever since.

Tales say that if men see her or hear her sing, they are so overcome by her beauty they become entranced. If they escape they go insane. If they can't get away, some say she kills and sometimes eats them. Others say they join her underwater for all eternity, but that they are treated well.

5. Finfolk

The Orkney Islands have stories about the malevolent creatures called finfolk. They could come and go as they pleased between the ocean and land and they could shape-shift at will.

Usually the finfolk spent the winters in Finfolkaheem - their city that was believed to be on the bottom of the ocean. In the summers they would live on the magical, vanishing island called Hildaland.

They were greatly feared as they would often kidnap mortals. Those who were taken would be forced to live out the rest of their life as the spouse of a finfolk. The women were especially prone to kidnapping humans. Initially they were supposed to be beautiful women with long golden hair and a fishtail. If they married a mortal man they would become a beautiful mortal woman. However, if not, they were forced to marry a man of the finfolk. They would then slowly grow extremely ugly and were forced to live on land and acquire silver for their husband.

4. Selkies

Selkies come from the Orkney Islands, where the word just means 'seal'. These creatures look like seals in the water, but they can come to land, shed their skin, and assume the form of a beautiful human.

Most tales depict them as peaceful creatures who come to land to dance on the beach in the moonlight or lay in the sun. One common thread in the stories is that the selkies need their skin to return to water. They are thus very protective of it and will run back to safety in the water if humans appear nearby.
Some tales say that young men will steal a female's skin so that she will be forced to stay on land with him. She will often marry the man and have his children. However, in most stories she ends up getting the skin back and returning to the ocean with or without her kids, leaving the man behind.
Male selkies are equally beautiful and coveted among humans. They will sometimes come to shore and find a young girl to sleep with. If a woman wants to call a selkie man, she has to go stand in the ocean and let seven tears drop into the water. He will then come to satisfy her needs.
