090919 Lee Hongki, As British-Korean “Jeremy”
FT Island’s Lee Hongki will play the role of “Jeremy“, a British-Korean, in his comeback drama.
LeeHongki revealed that he received support from his fellow FT Islandmembers for the upcoming SBS Wed-Thu drama “You’re Beautiful“. In thisdrama, Lee Hongki will play the role of “Jeremy“, a British-Koreanmember of the band “A.N.JELL“, whose father is from an English royalfamily and mother, a famous model. He was well-brought up in the familyand also helps to generate the harmonious bonding within the band.
Asa member of the popular group FT Island, Lee Hongki revealed that, “Inreality, there’s a group which I’m currently active in and I feelcomfortable acting as an idol with a bright character. Director, HongSungchang, also told me to be like my usual self. He also said to useour usual conversations as part of the dialogues, so I feel lessburdened.”
He also said that, “Other FT Island members also gaveme support by saying ‘Do well in your drama’ and showed much interest.Not only myself, other members also have passion in acting and are alsointerested in my role in this drama.”
Lee Hongki, who was alsocasted in MBC “Freezing Point” in 2004, revealed his thoughts aboutbeing a singer and an actor, “When I’m singing on stage, I feel theexcitement and thrill. When I’m acting, I develop feelings through theTV.
Actress Choi Ran, who acted as Lee Hongki’s motherpreviously in “Freezing Point“, will get to work with him once again.This time, she will play the role of “Go Minam” & “Go Minyuh“’saunt.
The new SBS Wed-Thu drama “You’re Beautiful” talks aboutthe growth of a teenage band and the love between the members. It willstart airing on 7th October at 9.55pm, taking over the slot of “SwallowThe Sun“. Cast includes Jang Geunsuk, Park Shinhye, Lee Hongki, JungYonghwa, Uee, Jung Chan, Kim Sungryung, Kim Inkwon, Choi Su-eun, BaeGeurin and others.

FT Island’s Lee Hongki will play double role at “You’re Beautiful” mini concert.
SBSdrama “You’re Beautiful” will take over the airing slot of “Swallow TheSun“, starting 7th October. Prior to the airing of this drama, a miniconcert will also be held at Melon-Ax Hall in Gwangjang-dong, Seoul at5pm on 20th September. In this concert, Lee Hongki will be the drummerof the band “A.N.JELL” in the drama, and at the same time, the vocalistof FT Island.
Lee Hongki will put up performances with twodifferent bands on stage. This mini concert will be included in thedrama as part of the scenes of A.N.JELL’s concert. In order to make thescenes look realistic, about 1,000 fans were invited through a specialevent. Besides Lee Hongki, members of A.N.JELL also include JangGeunsuk, Park Shinhye and Jung Yonghwa, with Jang Geunsuk as thevocalist. Comparisons of vocal abilities between Lee Hongki and JangGeunsuk are expected.
Besides FT Island, Mighty Mouth and 4minute will also be performing in support of this concert. |

FT Island's Hong-ki ready to return to acting

LeeHong-ki is mostly famous for being a member of the popular pop/rockband FT Island, but he’s looking forward to returning to acting, whichhe’ll do in SBS’s trendy idol-star drama You’re Beautiful [미남이시네요], hisfirst drama gig in five years. (He has made cameo appearances on dramasand sitcoms, but his last drama role was in MBC’s 2004 series FreezingPoint.)
I’d say most of the press attention is focused on itsleads — Jang Geun-seok as the idol band leader and Park Shin-hye as hiscrossdressing teammate — but with FT Island’s popularity, I’m surethere’s a vocal minority who’s excited for Lee Hong-ki.
Lee saysthat partly due to his membership in an idol group, he felt comfortableapproaching his role as an upbeat character of an idol group: “Thedirector, Hong Sung-chan, told me to just be as I usually am and to usethe way we normally talk in our dialogue, so I didn’t feel a lot ofpressure.”
The idol group within the drama is called A.N.JELL(which makes me cringe a little, but I suppose it’s not any worse thanreal band names like 2NE1). Lee Hong-ki’s character is named “Jeremy”and is a gyopo (Korean living abroad) from England. His father is anupper-class Englishman while his mother was once a famous model, and hegrew up well-off.
Lee says his fellow FT Island bandmates arecheering him on, and are looking at his role with particular interestbecause they also have an interest in acting. He described the pull hefeels to both being a singer and actor: “When I am performing as asinger, I feel a thrill standing onstage, and as I act, I feelaffection for the television screen.”
I wonder if Lee Hong-ki’scasting was at all influenced positively by another actress, Choi Ran,who is a Hong sisters favorite. Choi has appeared in three of theirdramas: She played Jae Hee’s mother in Chun-hyang, Lee Dong-wook’s auntin My Girl, and Jang Geun-seok’s loyal servant in Hong Gil Dong. Shealso played Lee Hong-ki’s mother in 2004’s Freezing Point, and has alsobeen cast in You’re Beautiful as the aunt to Park Shin-hye’s twincharacters.
Speaking of whom, You’re Beautiful is also drawingattention for its writing team, the Hong sisters (Hong Mi-ran, HongJung-eun) who have now penned four successful romantic-comedy dramas.While their dramas have had their flaws, I have greatly enjoyed themall, and consider their writing style to be at the top of the trendygenre. They don’t give up on their characters halfway through or copout of storylines, which unfortunately is not always true in othertrendy dramas. They also have an ability to keep twists funny and thepace fast and exciting, and have been lucky with casting charismaticlead actors with strong chemistry (Jae Hee, Lee Da-hae, Lee Dong-wook,Han Ye-seul, and Kang Ji-hwan, among others).
I hope their streak extends to You’re Beautiful, which premieres on Wednesday, October 7.
