Lee-hom rules The Taiwanese artiste wins six awards, including best international male singer, at My Astro Music Awards 2011
TAIWAN artistes ruled at the second My Astro Music Awards 2011 held at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, last Saturday night. Jointly organised by Astro and MY FM and presented by Canon, the awards show is to honour outstanding local as well as international talents in the Chinese music industry.
The biggest winner that night was Wang Lee-hom (far right) who took home six awards, including the coveted best of the year, best international male singer, best composing male singer, best producer and two golden melodies for his songs, All The Things You Never Knew and Bo Ya Jue Xian.
A close second was Jolin Tsai (bottom) with five awards for best international female artiste, all DJ & VJ choice international artiste, best dance song (Love Player) and two golden melodies (Honey Trap and Love Player).
Tsai was dressed to kill, first in an off-shoulder dress, and later in a skin-tight outfit with low-cut neckline and see-through back and sides.
Naturally, she had the guys all drooling and you can hardly blame the show hosts, Royce Tan and Bernard Hiew, from trying for a hug, especially after fellow co-host Wan Wai Fun took the opportunity to hug Wang during a demonstration of what winners should do when their name is called.
All in, the four hosts that night (including Jack Lim) – all from MY FM – had the most fun clowning around, prancing in nifty outfits and showing their mettle in being dramatic.
The fans also had a great time at the event with their show of affection and enthusiastic support for their idols and even those winners who could not make it to the show.
One of them was Hebe Tien (of the group S.H.E.) whose debut solo album, To Hebe, earned her three awards, namely best music video (You are Too Savage) as well as best ballad and a golden melody for Lonely is Fine. The awards were received by her label-mates Fahrenheit.
Initially, it looked like Fahrenheit was just there on Tien’s behalf but the popular group also went home a winner with four awards – professional performance award, best group (gold) and two golden melodies (Super Hot and Cherish Your Heartache).
In fact, there were supposed to be only 20 golden melodies and when the boys were asked to announce the 21st song, they were a tad confused. But it turned out to be good news as it was their own Super Hot.
A total of 25 golden melodies were awarded that night, with the majority being ballads but energetic dance performances by group artistes like AK and Fahrenheit served to heat up the atmosphere and break the monotony.
AK gave a fair imitation of Hongkong’s heavenly kings and said that it had performed the routine in Taiwan before. "We just hope that the audience understood what we were singing!"
Our local singers may be lacking behind where awards are concerned but they also have their fair share of fans and supporters who proceeded to scream the hall down when Zhu Hao Ren was announced the winner of the most improved national singer award and one golden melody for Hao Ren Card.
He certainly spiced things up with a magnificent dance routine while Amy Wang walked away with the best national female singer and best duet song, Position (with Adrian Tan).
Meanwhile, Malaysian boyband Thomas & Jack (above) took home the all DJ & VJ choice national artiste and one golden melody (The Miracle of Love) awards. The pair also won the most popular singer award with a whopping 121,472 votes from an internet vote station.
Other winners included Della Ding Dang with the best cover version award for I am a Little Bird, best TV drama original soundtrack (I Love Him from Autumn’s Concerto) as well as one golden melody (I Love Him); and Y2J with best rock song (Guardian), best group (silver), and one golden melody (Forgive).
Stephanie Liew and Fyone Tan walked away with best single for their Rainbow’s House while Eason Chan took best album (Time Flies), best performance award and one golden melody (Happy Ferris Wheel).
Meanwhile, AK won best group (bronze) and best newcomer idol international; Lala Hsu was best composing female singer and also went home with one golden melody (Acrophobia); Alien Wang took best international newcomer; and Josh Lai was best national newcomer.
Best national newcomer idol was Justin Lau and most improved international singer was Dennis Ng.
President encourages young people to show creativity
Taipei, March 29 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou said Tuesday that the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement signed with China last June has provided young people with more opportunity to showcase their creativity and make their dreams come true.
During a meeting with pop star Alexander Leehom Wang held to mark the 100th anniversary of National Tsing Hua University in northern Taiwan, Ma said the trade pact has helped Taiwan to show its soft power to the rest of the world.
Other examples of the country's soft power, he said, include Taiwan's participation of various international contests, while the country's golf and tennis players have become role models for many young people.
"No matter what dreams you have, it is essential to make yourself a valuable asset and to help people in need," Ma said.
He also encouraged students to improve their language skills and develop international perspectives and leadership in order to meet the challenges of globalization.
Wang, a singer, songwriter and actor, said young people should follow their hearts and find the things they want to do in life.
As long as people have the courage to pursue their dreams, it does not matter how long it takes to realize them, Wang said. (By Huang Yen-yu and Maia Huang)
