After G.NA was born in Edmonton, Canada in 1987, she grew up in Vancouver with her mother and father, whom were national athletes of Korea for swimming and Taekwondo. When she passed the 'Battle of Shinhwa' Auditions, she felt as if she accomplished her dream. It is said that the higher the mountain, the deeper the goal.
Rookie singer, Gina. There is a good reason that this saying comes to mind at the thought of her entrance as a singer. The one who was born with talent. But, she had to continue crying because of her misfortune. To the point of saying, "I no longer have tears to cry," the misfortune that was limiting her abilities were joined together again.
Gina's start was magnificent. She was selected in a cable channel's public audition in 2005. The girl group Five Girls was the 'female' Shinhwa. Gina's future (that seemed secure) started to drift away after the public break up of the team. After 2 years since the team was formed, it was broken up due to agency problems.
"As the leader, I had to deliver the news of the break up to the other members. I still clearly remember that day. They sensed what it was about and nobody spoke a word. We didn't even cry. We didn't have any tears left to cry. Each of us packed out personal belongings, and as we left the dorm, we were unsure of where to go or what to do."
The scattered and separated five members grew to become 'the center' among the world of singers. Those heroes are Wonder Girls' Yubin, After School's UEE, and Secret's Hyosung. "I heard they all cried when they saw my performance. I think it was because they were friends who knew what kind of trouble I went through. The happiness of standing on stage made me happy. My parents gave up later. This was the result of me being stubborn for 5 years. Please understand and cheer for me."
In 2007, she returned to Korea, and she returned to her trainee life under CUBE Entertainment. She practiced her dancing and singing daily for over 10 hours each day. In order to make herself familiar with Korean, she listened to TV news and dramas, but she didn't know it was this hard. If she had a lot of difficulty, her feelings of loneliness were even bigger. Although she was a loner, she was able to concentrate on her stage performance.
"Because I was from overseas, everything was strange to me. Whenever something strange came up, I asked, 'Why?' and adults felt unpleasant. I took every response. I was alone and I was shrinking. But now, I am familiar [with Korean] now."
Gina's debut song is 'I'll Back Off So You Can Live'. Like its powerful title, the performance was fresh. It was revealed that Five Girl's last runner Gina (real name Gina Choi) prepared her debut as the 2nd Park Jiyoon.
In a recent interview with eDailySPN, Gina revealed, "Once the debut of Five Girls was cancelled, I returned back to Canada, but I couldn't give up my dream of becoming a singer. So, I did an audition in Korea again and I went into JYP Entertainment."
Gina was born in Canada and she spent her childhood there. Because she wanted to become a singer, she came to Korea in 2005 when she was about 18 years old, and she did an audition to get into the group Five Girls (which is now called the 'misfortunate' group today). After she passed the auditions, she waited for a year as she prepared her debut during her trainee life, but due to agency problems, her debut was cancelled and her team was disbanded. As a result, Gina was heartbroken and she returned to Canada.
But, she didn't easily give up her dream. Once she returned to Canada, she only thought about becoming a singer. During the time of the auditions for Five Girls, Hong Seungsung of JYP Entertainment (but who is now the representative for CUBE Entertainment today) gave Gina another chance of an audition and she was able to come into JYP Entertainment in November 2007.
Gina said, "In the beginning, I received my training in New York under JYP, but I came back to Korea in May (2008) to practice. Since then, I prepared my debut as the 2nd Park Jiyoon. Because there wasn't a female solo singer with outstanding singing and dancing ability like Park Jiyoon sunbaenim did, I wanted to become a female singer with outstanding singing and dancing ability [just like her]."
Since Gina's trainee days, she received attention with her skinny appearance and her nickname was 'promising seed' because of her excellent singing ability.
Later, when representative Hong Seungsung came out of JYP Entertainment and set up CUBE Entertainment, Gina followed right behind him. In the end of 2008, Gina spent a year and a half preparing for her solo debut, and the results came in on the 14th.
Gina showed her strong-will by saying, "When I think about the past, it was a great opportunity for me to become stronger even with all those tragic periods. From now on, I know that the path I'm taking is dangerous, but I will work hard."
On the 15th, Gina had her debut performance and her title song 'I'll Back Off So You Can Live' is gaining popularity on various music charts with high rankings.
