Bhumiband undang Dayang
ARTIS: Bhumiband
JUDUL: Konspirasi Dunia
GENRE: Indie Pop
Goreng gitarnya pun mantap biarpun sikit old skool.

Ria Irawan seronok jadi 'mentor' Dayang
04-01-2007 01:53:42 PM
Wahida Asrani
"Walau apapun, saya bukan feminis. Jika ada jodoh, saya tetap akan berkahwin juga," ujarnya ringkas.
Turut berlakon di dalam filem yang telah dinobatkan sebagai Filem Terbaik di Festival Filem Hawaii baru-baru ini ialah Shanty, Jajang C Noer dan Dominique. |

Byline: 10.45pm, the Planet's management had no choice but to stop patrons
IT was quite a phenomenal night. For a Sunday, Bintang Walk in Kuala Lumpur looked a little bit busier than usual.
The open car park opposite KL Plaza, which usually has ample parking space on a Sunday, was full.
Then there was the pretty long queue that led to Planet Hollywood and the commotion that it created.
No, it wasn't a function that involved international names or any of the Planet's glamorous Hollywood shareholders, but the crowd was actually there for our own Dayang Nurfaizah, the "underdog" who has managed to come out with little surprises in recent months especially. from going in.
And even if you made it inside it was almost impossible to move in the club.
Did Dayang really cause that? She was apparently really worth that kind of trouble.
That night Dayang's potential was about to be fully realised. She can scale greater heights if given the right stuff.
She didn't need to speak. All she had to do was sing, and sang she did.
Her admirers remained glued to their seats, waiting for their favourite songs.
If the opening song Untuk Sementara - one of the songs included in Dayang's second album - was viewed as a teaser, the next one, Karyn White's Superwoman, was an even bigger lure.
Her voice soared as she continued to cover almost all of the popular stuff including Shanice's I Love Your Smile, Can't Take My Eyes Off You, Toni Braxton's Breathe Again, Whitney Houston's Exhale and Janet Jackson's Let's Wait A While.
In the second set, she did more jazzy stuff like Midnight At The Oasis to the more soulful rendition of Houston's Why Does it Hurt So Bad, Ashanti's new hit Foolish, India Arie's Video and Oletta Adams' tunes.
There was also a Cinta medley and Dayang's choice was Sheila Majid and Kris Dayanti's Mencintaimu.
What about her other songs, you might ask. Well, she tucked one between the covers and the medley, and disappointingly, sang only three of her songs.
Apart from the opening song, she also sang Kembalilah Sayang from her first album, and the ever popular Seandainya Masih Ada Cinta from her second album right at the end.
That left some of her fans quite annoyed; some ended screaming "...nyanyi lagu sendiri laa... (sing your own songs!)"
Music director-cum-keyboardist Achis was also not too helpful that night.
For instance, while Dayang's fans (it was an almost all-Malay crowd, mind you) were requesting songs such as Rindu Bayangan, he would signal to Dayang to skip it and tell the audience that it would be played the following week.
Dayang however relented and invited her brother Dino on stage to help her sing the song a capella (as Achis trailed behind).
Really, it would be understandable if Dayang balanced her own material with international hits, but only three original songs? Maybe this Sunday would be different.Zainal Alam Kadir |

HOW does a club fill its dance floor at midnight, on a Sunday before a working Monday? Slot Dayang Nurfaizah in for an after dinner show, that's how.
It's also an ingenious way to figure out a singer's fan base - do the patrons go home to their families or do they party irresponsibly since college only starts at about 10 in the morning. For two weekends on July 7 and 14, Planet Hollywood Kuala Lumpur charted record-level head-counts at its Sunday Night Live series.
There had never been a crowd that big, that early.
The club was filled by 2100hrs. After a certain teeming point, Planet Hollywood management refused entry to the numbers in-line who would have posed a safety hazard had they been allowed to pack the stairway, seeing as how that was the only vacant space left in the club. When she finished performing, Dayang was asked for a "show cause" as to the grounds for such enthusiastic fan reception.
"I think it's because I haven't had a public show in a while," she replied, an impish grin signaling she knew more than just that.
Prompted for a detailed assessment, she admitted that she gets, "this kind of thing," at most of her public performances. Who would have believed the hullabaloo caused by the queue outside Planet Hollywood both Sundays - which at some point extended a few metres to the front entrance of KL Plaza - was all for diminutive Dayang, 20- years-old and virtually unknown before her 2000 AIM appearance. On that awards night two years ago, Dayang didn't win in the Best New Artiste category she was nominated for but, what surprise should that be to anyone? Current chart scorcher Too Phat was not chosen when it was nominated for the same title the following year either and look where the group is now. Of the four other nominees from AIM 2000, winner Shawn Bahrain and Juliana Banos are still good-looking while Moin and Manterra occasionally grace the pages of URTV. Had Dayang been discouraged and given up at that point, the Malaysian music scene would have been on the losing end.
We would still not have a threatening challenger to Princess Sweetie Pie. Kris Dayanti's encouragement Perhaps it was encouragement from the likes of international Kris Dayanti (on hand as a neighbourly guest) who gushed something wonderful throughout the night, after hearing Dayang's singing during practice earlier in the afternoon, that prompted Dayang to persevere.
Or more like progress. Dayang's first album Dayang Nurfaizah was memorable only to the point of introducing her to the public, particularly this side of Malaysia.
The Sarawakian had won the RTM Golden Teen Search singing competition in 1997 and in her hometown of Kuching, had been making ripples already. Her second album - a vast improvement.
Malaysian market. Timing of a product launch is already an important consideration but to struggle against the Siti (never mind the second name) rage, one has to be more than perfectly timed. One has to be re-released it looks like.
It seems a breach in the Siti momentum thrust forward Dayang's best so far, Seandainya Masih Ada Cinta. On the popularity of that song from the second album, Dayang hit darling status, not least of all thanks to her cili padi appeal - petite but a dynamite at the microphone.
And so it was that Broadway Records, her recording label, saw it as a good strategy to re-release the first album, named after the song almost as if to secure recognition. Still, with the mass that packed Planet Hollywood both nights of her two weekend show, it is a surprise to note that Seandainya Masih Ada Cinta is still not reaching platinum level in sales.
Quirky, quirky, quirky the buyers are. Either that or cheap, because Dayang Nurfaizah's album is among the exclusive list preferred by pirates.
For a Malaysian singing in Malay, Dayang makes the selection at pasar malam stalls in snooty Bangsar even. The way she has captured supposed upmarket buyers is by being so very flexible and diverse.
And jazzy without being a Sheila Majid copy. "Yes, I would like to sing like the top singers," says Ms Dynamite, at this point giving as examples names like Kris, Ruth, Sheila and Whitney, "but I am Dayang, not them." How confident, how smart.
Is she really just 20? During both shows Dayang paid tribute to these very names by outdoing them! Her rendition of Fallin would quite surely faze Alicia Keys and is almost as astounding as Ning Baizura's version. Marring the first weekend's show, however, was performance, presentation and audience rapport.
Not necessarily disappointing since the audience seemed quite intent on loving her, and as such kept the night spirited, but more like, "Hmm, I wonder what's wrong." Most noticeable was her missing out words on the covers.
No problems with her own songs, however.
Those she missed totally, save a few of the runaway hits, much to hardcore fan disenchantment.
On Karyn White's Superwoman she clammed up at "the rush hour" and for the Shanice song "I like your smile" Dayang missed almost a whole line.
"I'm sorry," Dayang apologises at an after show Press interview on the first Sunday night.
"I just wasn't prepared enough for some of those new songs," she adds, attributing the mediocrity to an extended bout of flu and a thoroughly hectic pre-Planet schedule. "Insyallah I'll do better next week," was all that it took to assure herself and the fans.
Dayang was beyond belief the next week.
She kept her word and exploded on stage.
Want variety? Go watch a Dayang show.
There was Toni Braxton, there was improved Sonny and Cher with the help of Anuar Zain, there were her femme fatale heroes.
Dayang also resurrected Minnie Ripperton, and eclipsed India Arie.
But she must have made veteran singer Jay Jay cry.
Dayang and brother Dino did THAT version of Carefree's Rindu Bayangan as was witnessed by an adoring nationwide audience at the 2002 AIM.
And the audience went THAT wild. |

Dayang Nurfaizah sues management company
NEW STRAITS TIMES-MANAGEMENT.
Publication: The America's Intelligence Wire
Publication Date: 11/22/2002

(From Worldsources (English))
KUALA LUMPUR, Thurs. - Popular Malay singer Dayang Nurfaizah Awang Dowty filed a civil suit in the High Court today, naming her management company Bintang Seni Sdn Bhd and two others over a management contract she claimed she was induced into signing.
She filed her suit at the Civil High Court Registry at Wisma Denmark via the legal firm of Messrs Mior & Mior today, naming Broadway Entertainment (M) Sdn Bhd and Lindung Seni Sdn Bhd as the other defendants.
In her suit, Dayang Nurfaizah is seeking a declaration that the contract she entered into with Bintang Seni in 1999 be declared null and void on the grounds that, among others, she was unduly influenced by the directors of the defendants into signing.
She alleged that she was in fact reluctant to sign the contract at the time, saying she only did it upon the directors' insistence.
Dayang Nurfaizah claimed the directors had used their influence to persuade her to sign the contract, which she alleged was onesided and did not serve her best interests.
She alleged that one of the directors, Tan Boon Heng, had pressured and coerced her father and herself (then 18) to sign the agreement.
Claiming, among other things, that the directors had used her to reap profits, Dayang Nurfaizah said she was cheated of income that she was supposed to receive from her performances.
She claimed the money was taken by Ana Muliati Pratadaja (a director of Bintang Seni) and misused for other purposes, adding that she was never shown a true and accurate statement of accounts pertaining to her earnings.
She also said she was never paid royalties or shown records or information on her album sales although she had requested it many times.
She wants, among others, Ana Muliati to return all payments, including RM600,000 she was supposed to receive under the agreement, interest, damages, costs and other relief.

SINGER Dayang Nurfaezah Awang Dowty must be singing the blues these days.
Since she filed a suit against management company Bintang Seni Sdn Bhd on Nov 21, questions have arisen: Which company is she going to? Who is her new manager?
It's time to set the record straight.
First of all, Dayang is under contract with Bintang Seni till 2007.
Therefore, she is legally bound to perform as an artiste under the management company.
"Until the contract expires, Dayang is required to release seven studio albums with her record company, Bintang Seni managing her affairs," said Broadway Entertainment (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Boon Tan. Broadway is the parent company of Bintang Seni.
"Dayang has so far released two albums under the contract because her debut album actually came under the old contract which is no longer valid.
The new contract was signed on July 26, 1999 when Dayang turned 18. This means there are five more albums for her to record."
Meanwhile, people in the industry have also assumed that Dayang is now being managed by a new company and that Sheila Majid's personal assistant Liza, of Magada Enter-tainment is her new manager.
In response, Bintang Seni released a statement last Friday to state that Dayang is still "legally contracted" with the company. The company advised the Press against using quotes of any "third party" with regards to Dayang's activities.
When contacted, Liza said Dayang has not signed on with Magada Entertainment and is under contract with Bintang Seni.
"Since her case is still pending in court, she prefers to manage herself. I am here to help her. We at Magada have never claimed to represent her," she said.
"Reports about me being her manager are also not true. They are just assumptions made by people in the industry. I am only her personal stylist."
Elaborating on the statement, BoonTan said Bintang Seni has not received any court injunction to stop representing Dayang in view of the ongoing case.
"We continue to fulfil our end of the contract. In fact, we recently got her to host two Hiburan Minggu Ini variety programmes on RTM, so we hope Dayang does what is expected of her," said Boon Tan.
Dayang has no intention of playing truant. Speaking on the phone on her way to the programme's full-dress rehearsal at RTM on Friday, she was, however, determined to manage herself.
"At the moment, my sister Dayang Nursyamsyah and Liza are helping me out," she said, refusing to elaborate further as the case is still pending.
Her lawyer Mior Farid Mior Abdul Murith said: "Let's get one thing straight. There is no external party who has been influencing her to make this decision (filing the suit). It is not something that she thought of overnight.
"The actual reason was born out of her own feelings of wanting to improve her career as an artiste. It was also a result of a long history of circumstances she has been facing under Bintang Seni. It is good that matters like these are addressed because this can help develop the present law governing local artistes' welfare."

DAYANG Norfaizah's performance was, as usual, breathtaking.
With good music and friendly faces all round, ZA's launch of its latest nail and makeup colour range for spring/summer 2003 at Planet Hollywood Kuala Lumpur was off to a great start.
Members of the Press, magazine writers, photographers and others were treated to a lavish photo shoot featuring the singer as ZA's spokesperson this side of the continent.
Sitting amongst brightly coloured cushions on a chaise longue, she struck up various poses, much to the delight of the photographers.
Make-up artist Amy showed off her skills with the popular songstress as model. Better lighting would have helped though - onlookers would have been able to follow the techniques used more closely.
The first "look" that was produced was a fresh, radiant one. It's meant for teens who have just started using cosmetics. The look - "Smile Sunshine" - will receive approving nods even from the fussiest of moms. "Midnight Sparkle" is a little more dramatic but never garish. Shades of blue and white opened up the eyes for that "wow" factor. Perfect for girls planning a night out on the town.
And how better to complement makeup if not with showy nail colours. Three words describe ZA Nail colours - young, funky and vibrant. Hence Dayang fits the bill for endorsing the brand. There are 20 shades that project metallic, fluorescent, glittery, sheer or pearly nails.
ZA Nail happens to be the fastest-drying nail polish in the market. It also contains vitamin E and calcium which serve to fortify and strengthen.
It must be a sign of the times when nails are not merely dressed in space-age colours but sport designs that are three-dimensional.
"ZA Nail Jewels" diamante stick-ons are fun to experiment with, given the right mood.
No cosmetic glue is needed. One simply peels off the stick-ons and press them directly on to painted nails. Add ZA's Base and Top Coat seal and voila - the party girl emerges. Use the pearly Top Coat on its own or as a base for other colours.
If you wish to use more creative techniques, you could opt for little white daisies with diamantes in the middle. This may take a little more skill since the daisies are not press-ons but manually painted motifs.
The end result is nail-bitingly pretty. |

(From New Straits Times (Malaysia))
KUALA LUMPUR, Mon. - The High Court today postponed to June 9 the hearing of an application for an injunction by Bintang Seni Sdn Bhd and two others to strike out a suit filed against them by popular Malay singer Dayang Nurfaizah Awang Dowty over a contract she claimed she was induced into signing.
Judge Datuk James Foong fixed the date when the matter was brought before him in chambers.
The hearing of this application and also an application for an injunction by Bintang Seni to stop Dayang Nurfaizah from breaching the contract was fixed for today before judge Datuk Abdul Malik Ishak, but was postponed due to the absence of the lead counsel for the defendants.
In the suit filed on Nov 21, last year, Dayang Nurfaizah, who named Broadway Entertainment (M) Sdn Bhd and Lindung Seni Sdn Bhd as the two other defendants, is seeking a declaration that the contract she entered into with Bintang Seni in 1999 be declared null and void on grounds that, among others, she was unduly influenced by the directors of the defendants into signing it.
She alleged that she was in fact reluctant to sign the contract at the time, saying she only did it upon the directors' insistence.
Dayang Nurfaizah claimed the directors had used their influence to persuade her to sign the contract, which she alleged was one-sided and did not serve her best interests.
Claiming, among others, that the directors had used her to reap profits, Dayang Nurfaizah said she was cheated of income she was supposed to receive from performances.
She also said she was never paid royalties or shown records or information on her album sales although she had requested it many times.
She wants, among others, for the return of all payments, including RM600,000 she was supposed to receive under the agreement, interest, damages, costs and other relief. |
