It is the “SHORT SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL & ASIA 2010” first day of Yokohama today. The first program was “Asia International & Japan Competition”. It attached to the guest “Ku Hye-Seon” from South Korea!! She acted in the famous movie that South Korea version “Boys over flowers” as the heroine of this story “Tsukushi”. Her first directing movie “The Maddona” also was screened as the special program.
She is truly very popular actress in South Korea. Surprisingly, some audience came about a coming ardent fan to meet her spending six hours from Osaka!! We really appreciate the audience for coming to the festival.
Even Q&A after it screens, by coming of the question one after another, and becoming of time insufficient really. Nevertheless, she also has politely answered each one while exchanging the performance that sometimes waved to her fans, and I seem to have gripped the mind of the fan.
I was not able to think that she is 25 years old then. Because, she had had steady and polished idea.The activity in the future as the next director work and the actress of the woman who said, "I want to pour the power of 100% into the director and the work of 100% and actresses" is attention.

MovieWeek (MV): Both of you also worked together in ‘cheerful caretaker’, did you become close then?
GHS: We were close friends even before working on the project together.
SHJ: We had common friends so we matched well and become close after that.
MV: Then halfway your friends were forgotten(left out) and the two of you became closer?
SHJ: Yeah (laughs).
GHS: We’d talk about our problems.
MV: By accidentally laying out your problems, you’ve become close.
GHS: Since we’re both girls, we became close talking about guys (laughs).
SHJ: We talk about the entertainment circle, about our ideal guys.
GHS: We tell each other the most minute details, and we also happen to share the same goals(direction) in life. I think that is how we got close.
SHJ: However it’s fortunate that our ideal guys are different (laughs). We’d be in deep trouble if we had the same ideals.
MV: What did you think of each other when you first met? What’s your first impression?
SHJ: 둘 다 낮을 가려서 (??)We were still using polite forms in speech even though we've known each other for a year. It was really awkward. HS was present at a certain place so we greeted each other, “a, an-nyeong haseyo” and ‘yes, you came?” (laughs).
MV: Even though you greeted each other, you didn’t continue chatting although you wanted to?
SHJ: Both of us aren’t people who can easily start a conversation. It takes a long time when it comes to that kind of thing. It took about one and a half years.
MV: What suddenly brought both of you close?
SHJ: We went on a trip together?
GHS: Yes, that’s it. A trip.
MV: Since you don’t even chat much, how did you end up on a trip together?
SHJ: While looking for people who could make it during the same time, it happened to be the two of us.
GHS: Before that, we met each other more often so we were already somewhat closer, but the trip really brought us together. I haven’t been to a bathhouse with any of my friends before. But when we were in Japan, we went to an open air bath together and became close. We’re bathhouse friends (laughs). We shared the same room for around a week.
MV: Since you became close, you get to see your friend by working together through the short movie project, and then you wrote a long movie screenplay.
GHS: Yes, while I was creating a female character, I included a lot of aspects of Hyun Jin. No matter how you see it, she doesn’t open her heart easily, however she works passionately without a word. I would show that indirectly, I bring that kinda tone(figurative speech) very often.
MV: After watching Yo-sool, it gives me the feeling that the female lead is asking ‘can’t i love both guys?’ Honestly, she was worried over that, wasn’t she?
GHS: (looking at SHJ) Was it like that? (laughs)
SHJ: There are various different types of love, aren’t there? There are times when you love someone as a person of the opposite gender, and there are times when you love a person because of the person’s good qualities. From that viewpoint, I think gender is not an issue and one is able to love.
GHS: Ji-eun in the movie is not one that makes the first move. From the beginning to the end, she didn’t do anything. The guys were the ones that misunderstood things. I think I thought more about that part.
SHJ: It would be better if it were more like that. I’m very envious of Ji-eun. Why can’t I live that way? (laughs).
GHS: Becoz of that, it’s more regrettable. (laughs).

GHS who has performed activities in different areas, know as actress, writer, illustrator, composer, etc is now a full-scale movie director. Following her 2008 short movie 'cheerful caretaker', she's stepping forward as a long movie director through the movie 'yo-sool' which opens on the 24th.
음악학교를 배경으로 세 남녀의 사랑과 우정을 그린 '요술'은 다분히 판타지적인 요소를 가미한 음악 영화다. 스토리보다는 때때로 음악이 더 귀에 감기기도 하지만 청춘의 사랑과 비극을 그린 영화의 만듦새에는 관객들의 마음을 두드리는 무언가가 존재한다.
'yo-sool' which draws the love and friendship of 3 people in a music school background, is a musical movie which is flavored with a slight fantasy element. Although occasionally the music may override the story(??), the youthful love and tragedy is bound to tug at the audience's heartstrings.
"청춘의 극단적인 방황과 어리석음을 아름답게 보여주고 싶었다"는 그는 "막상 다 찍고 보니 아쉬움과 걱정이 밀려오는데 과연 내 표현방식을 관객들이 어떤 감성으로 받아들여줄지 설렘도 크다"고 전한다.
"I wanted to beautifully demonstrate what it is like to be radically lost and foolish. Upon finishing with the filming, although feelings of worry and regret flooded me, i have managed to express the movie in the way i wanted to. The female lead in the movie Seo Hyun Jin has always been a buddy of GHS. As for Kim Jung Wook, Im Ji Gyu and the rest of the actors are all in the same age group, the filming atmosphere was always amicable.
구혜선은 "이렇게 즐겁게 일한 적이 있었나 싶을 정도로 좋았다"라며 함께 한 배우·스태프들을 '직장동료'들이라 칭하며 남다른 애정을 드러냈다. "촬영이 끝나면 항상 직장동료들과 막걸리 한 잔씩 기울이고 헤어졌다. 그러고 나면 또 보고 싶어서 촬영이 없어도 며칠 안돼 다시 만나고 그랬다"라며 웃음짓는다.
GHS described it as a great experience where she can look back and say 'i've worked and enjoyed it so much'. She calls the actors/actresses and staff as 'jik jang dong ryo' (= literally means co-workers. you may remember her twitter messages saying she's going to the alcohol house with her 'jik jang dong ryo') expressing an affection that's unique. "When we finish filming, we would always drink makkolli before going our separate ways. After that, we wanted to meet again so even though filming ended we had to meet up again after a few days," she remarked and laughed.
물론 영화가 나오기까지가 결코 녹록했던 과정은 아니었다. 투자를 받기 위해 직접 발품을 팔며 설득을 하러 다니면서 자존심도 모두 굽혔다. 이름이 알려진 연예인이니까 영화촬영도 훨씬 수월할 수 있을 거라는 예상은 냉혹한 현실 앞에서 낱낱이 깨어졌다.
The process was definitely not without difficulty. While I went about trying to persuade people to invest, I had to yield my pride. The thought that things will be easier for an entertainer was fully broken in the face of brutal reality.
" 사실 단편 하나 달랑 찍은 감독을 누가 뭘 믿고 투자를 해 주겠나. 시나리오 기획안을 들고 찾아가도 선뜻 투자를 해 주겠다는 곳을 찾기 힘들더라. 그런 일을 몇번 겪으면서 개인적으로는 나를 많이 버릴 수 있었다. 그동안은 나도 모르게 '나니까 잘 될거야'란 착각이 있었는데 그런 부분을 모두 버릴 수 있었달까."
" Truth be told, who would trust a director who has only filmed a short movie and invest. Even though I brought my screenplay and went around, it was difficult to find someone willing to invest. After experiencing that for a couple times, I've individually emptied myself. During that time, the delusional thought that i didn't know i had that says 'becoz of who I am, things will go smoothly' was completely banished."
실제로 그는 80여명에 이르는 스태프와 배우들을 모두 섭외해 놓고 촬영 한 달 전까지도 투자를 받지 못했었다. 일단 용기 있게 '저질러놓고 보는' 그의 스타일을 엿볼 수 있는 대목이었다.
Actually there were still no investors one month before filming, although 80 persons (staff and actors included) have been casted/chosen. With the courage I had, I decided to 'commit and see'.
구 혜선은 "인건비 계약서를 쓰고 나만 믿고 몇달 간 기다려준 사람들에 대한 책임감이 생겨 어깨가 정말 무거웠다"라며 "죽어도 투자를 받아야겠다는 생각이 머릿 속에 가득했었다"고 당시에 대해 들려주었다.
"My shoulders were heavy becoz of the responsibility I felt towards the personnel who have trusted, signed their contracts with me and waited for several months. The thought that I have to find an investor even to the point of death became even stronger in my mind."
결국 소속사인 YG엔터테인먼트 양현석 대표가 회사에서 진행하는 기부 캠페인과 결합시켜 투자를 승인해 주었고 구혜선도 자신의 러닝 개런티를 모두 기부하는 방식으로 투자금의 한 몫을 담당해 '요술'이 세상의 빛을 볼 수 있었다.
In the end, through a combined effort with a donation campaign by her management company YG Entertainment, she managed to obtain approval for investment. Her movie 'yo-sool' would finally see the light.
구혜선은 "투자도 일을 다 벌려 놓은 후에야 결정됐고 배급도 크랭크업 직전까지 확정되지 않았었다"라며 "내가 생각해도 '돌았었나' 싶을 정도로 위험한 짓을 해 본거다"라며 웃음지었다.
"The investment was still not certain right before crank-up. Thinking about it makes me want to go crazy ('돌았었나'??) as I've done a dangerous thing" said GHS as she laughed.
과정을 통해 배운 점이 많다. 연기자로서 작품에 참여할 때와 달리 처음부터 끝까지 스태프·배우들을 하나 하나 챙기는 마음씀이며 누군가의 도움이 필요할 때는 망설임없이 머리를 숙이는 지혜 등은 "스스로에게도 굉장히 발전적인 경험이었다"고 꼽는다.
There are a lot of things that have been gained through those experiences. 'Different from the times when I'm involved in a project as an actress, I feel the need to take care of the staff and actors from the start to the very end in my heart. There was no hesitation to voice out when I needed help, personally it was an overwhelming experience for me.'
영 화에 대한 욕심이 점차 커지기 시작한 것도 개인적으로는 매우 뿌듯하다. 전작인 '유쾌한 도우미'가 부산 아시아단편영화제 관객상에 이어 일본 유바리 국제 판타스틱영화제, 쇼트쇼츠 국제 단편영화제 등에 초청되면서 영화에 대한 안목도 조금씩 넓혀가고 있다. "영화제에 가면 자의식 강하고 굉장히 열정적인 분들을 만나면서 자극을 많이 받는다"라며 "동시에 내가 얼마나 무식한가도 깨닫게 돼 욕심을 갖게 되는 계기"라고도 전한다.
She personally feels great that her desire for movies have grown. Her previous project 'cheerful caretaker' won the viewer's award at the Pusan Asia Short Movie Festival. She was later extended invitations for events, such as the Japanese Yoobari International Fantastic Movie Festival and the Short Shorts International Short Movie Festival, helping her widen her perspective towards movies. "I feel a strong sense of identity when I participate in movie festivals. I am stimulated meeting with passionate people. At the same time, I realize how ignorant I am which increases my desire to do well."
스스로 평가하기에 아직은 감독으로서 갈 길이 멀지만 조금씩 자신만의 스타일을 찾아가고 싶다.
Although there's still a long way for her to go as a director, she wants to find a style that's befitting for her alone little by little.
"앞으로도 여성 취향의 판타지적인 성격의 영화를 계속 만들고 싶다. 다음 작품은 뱀파이어가 된 여자들의 이야기인데 내년쯤 찍고 싶다. 그러려면 일단은 '요술'로 자리매김 할 수 있어야 하는데…걱정이다"(웃음)
"In the future, I'd like to continue to film fantasy movies that appeal to females. My next project which I hope to film next year, will be a story about women who become vampires. But first, 'yo-sool' must be able to set its mark ... i'm worried." (smiles)
