Based on a true story
This story is about a girl named Aya who suffered from an incurable disease, but lived life to the fullest until her death at 25. The original story is based on the diary Aya kept writing until she could no longer hold a pen. The book that later followed entitled 揙ne Liter of Tears" has sold over 1.1 million copies.
Aya's only wish was 搕o live." By carefully depicting Aya's earnest desire to live, and the love of her family, friends, and lover, the drama, 揙ne Liter of Tears" wishes to deliver her simple but strong message: 揓ust being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing."
Episode One
The drama starts right before Aya is hit with the tragic illness, called Spinocerebellar Degeneration, in which the nerve cells of areas necessary for the human body to move and balance - including the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord - transforms and eventually disappears.
15-year old Aya Ikeuchi (Erika Sawajiri) is the eldest daughter of a typical Japanese family. She lives with her cheerful and reliable mother, Shioka (Hiroko Yakushimaru), father Mizuo (Takanori Jinnai), owner of a tofu shop, younger sisters Ako (Riko Narumi) and Rika, and younger brother Hiroki (Yuma Sanada of Johnny's Jr).
On the day of her high school entrance exam, Aya is full of energy as she leaves the house. But she falls asleep on the bus and misses her stop. She gets off the bus and starts running in the rain, slips and falls, injuring her knee. That's when she meets Haruto Aso (Ryo Nishikido), who was planning to skip the exam. He gives her a ride on his bicycle to school where the exam will be given. Aya is allowed to take the exam in the school nurse's office, and manages to pass.
When the new semester begins, Aya is elected class representative and joins the basketball team. On the boys team is someone she has eyes for, which adds to the things she has to look forward to.
Amidst her happy days at school, Aya begins to experience physical difficulties. She often drops food from her chopsticks while eating, can't pour water into a cup without spilling it, and occasionally wobbles while she walks. Aya's mother Shioka, a former nurse, is the only person that realizes these changes.
One day, Aya is about to leave home as usual. When she starts to run, she trips over her own feet and falls. She couldn't protect herself with her arms while falling, causing her to land on her face - making her bleed heavily. This injury soon reveals the existence of Aya's fateful disease.

Kazuma Yamazaki (Gori) works at a medium-sized stationary maker. Everyday, he is pushed around by his selfish wife, Sanae (Arisa Mizuki). They finally buy a house of their own but on moving day, Kazuma finds out that Sanae had changed the moving service to the 揷ost-saving" type without telling him. Kazuma now has to unpack and carry dozens of boxes on his own while Sanae is at the beauty salon relaxing. What's worse, she gives Kazuma a phone call saying, 揃e sure to take my stuff up to the 2nd floor."
The following day, Sanae orders Kazuma to go shop for their daughter Madoka's underwear. Sanae writes 搖ndies" in big letters on the back of his hand as a memo. After work, Kazuma goes to the department store to shop for Madoka's undies, but he doesn't know which design to choose. When he calls Sanae for advice, she tells him to take photos on his cell phone and send them to her. Kazuma obeys and starts taking photos of girls' underwear. Looking very suspicious, he catches the attention of the guard. 揝ir, may I ask what you're doing?" Kazuma is taken away for questioning...
Ooku: Hana no Ran (The Inner Palace: War of the Belles)

Deep within Edo Castle was the oh-oku (the inner palace)-the expansive living quarters for the wives and concubines of the Tokugawa Shogun. The entrance was under the tightest security, and the corridors were barred to all men except the Shogun himself. It is said that over 1,000 women lived in the oh-oku to serve the Shogun. For him, life in the oh-oku was like living in paradise.
Oh-oku is the story of the picturesque lives of the women living in the hidden, maze-like inner structure of Edo Castle. Inside, the women wielded their beauty and knowledge: some of them to win the Shogun's love, to obtain political power, or to climb the ladder of the oh-oku hierarchy. Their lives were filled with romance, hatred, anger, envy, tears, and persecution.
Story
The third Oh-oku series takes place during the 5th Shogun Tsunayoshi's era. Oh-oku is completely controlled by the Shogun's mother, Keishoin. Giving birth to the Shogun's two children, Tokumatsu and Tsuruhime, Oden-no-kata (Eiko Koike) is Keishoin's favorite concubine. Tsunayoshi's official wife, Nobuko (Norika Fujiwara) - who came from the famous Takatsukasa Family in Kyoto - has no children yet. Coming from a very noble family, Nobuko always stands against Keishoin and Oden-no-kata, both who come from average households.
More than anything, Shogun Tsunayoshi (Shosuke Tanihara) loves to study. Since a very early age, Keishoin valued studies rather than martial arts and provided her son with plenty of education. Especially passionate about Confucianism, Tsunayoshi was eager to follow the 揻ilial duties" (duties of a child to his parent) written in 揟he Analects of Confucius". That is why he devoted himself to his mother, and is at her beck and call.
Tsunayoshi has two close advisors that he trusts very much: Narisada Makino and Yoshiyasu Yanagisawa. The story begins when Tsunayoshi one day visits Narisada's residence.

Yutaro Minagawa (Mirai Moriyama) had always been smart and called a child prodigy. When he successfully passes the entrance exam for a prestigious medical school, the Minagawa family is filled with joy. Meanwhile, his elder sister Hiroko (Misaki Ito) - no brains, great looks - wins a beauty pageant and gets engaged to a man who works at an advertisement agency. In Miyazaki Prefecture, Yutaro's father's sho-chu liquor has received several awards, and is now expanding business. Everything was going so smooth with the Minagawa family until one incident drops the family into the depths of misery...
October 2005
Yutaro opens the door of his apartment to find someone standing there. It's his sister Hiroko, who he hadn't contacted in years. Seeing all of her luggage, it's obvious that she has left home. Yutaro gives her a disgusted look, but Hiroko doesn't seem to care. She says she wants to stay with him for a while.
When they finally settle down, Hiroko gives Yutaro the update on the Minagawa family. Their father was ripped off and lost his sho-chu brewery. What's worse, he fell sick and passed away. While Yutaro is taking all of this in, he is panicking on the inside, but pretends to act strong.
The following day, Hiroko visits the hospital Yutaro works at. While Yutaro is very unkind to her, his colleagues notice Hiroko right away and everybody in the Medical Department is talking about her. Yutaro's mentor, Dr. Takeda (Masanobu Takashima), is especially interested in Hiroko. He finds out that the beautiful girl he spotted on the plane he boarded after a conference in Miyazaki was Yutaro's sister. He believes that it's fate that they met again.
Meanwhile, Hiroko heads to a job interview at a night club. She has never worked at such a place, but her stunning looks and bright personality catches the manager's eye, and she is hired on the spot. From her first day at work, the customers love Hiroko, and gets requested for from table to table. Saori (Yumiko Shaku), the top hostess at the club until Hiroko came along is not amused.

Blogs are getting popular in Japan, as shown in the new Fuji TV drama series "Oni Yome Nikki (Devil Bride Diary)" (Tuesday, 10 p.m.), which is based on one written by a woman called Sanae. The blog's theme, as is apparent in the title, is the casual, everyday cruelty wives inflict on their husbands.
In episode two, which airs this week, Sanae (Arisa Mizuki) and Kazuma (Gori) -- of the comedy duo Garage Sale -- have finally bought a home. The family finances become tight, and Kazuma's pocket money is reduced by his wife. However, some of his colleagues at work are planning a trip to a hot-spring resort and Kazuma wants to go. He decides to dip into Sanae's "emergency" money. But Sanae seems to have her own plans for the money. A friend recommends they go to a nice hotel that is holding a special event for women.

A slightly more serious exploration of marital problems is offered on "Jukunen Rikon (Senior Divorce)" (TV Asahi, Thursday, 9 p.m.).
Kotaro (Tetsuya Watari) and Yoko (Keiko Matsuzaka) have been married for more than 30 years, and on the day Kotaro retires from his company Yoko announces that she wants a divorce.
Kotaro, who has put all his energy into his work for the past three decades, is totally unprepared.
In episode two, Yoko moves into a separate room in their home and plans to stay there until she finds her own apartment.
She tells Kotaro that while she remains in the house she will not do any housework.
The couple's two grown daughters are upset and try to think of ways of stopping the divorce.
The couple's son-in-law comes up with the idea that if the other daughter marries her fiancee, then the wedding will force Kotaro and Yoko to stay together -- at least for the time being.
Meanwhile, Kotaro is having a lot of problems with housework.

More marital intrigue is promised in the latest of Fuji TV's "O-oku" series, which is about the concubines who served the shogunate during the Edo Period.
The latest series, titled "Hana no Ran (Flower Insurrection)" (Thursday, 10 p.m.), is about Yasuko (Rina Uchiyama), a samurai's wife who catches the eye of the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi.
Tsunayoshi, who has already had his way with Yasuko's mother, has Yasuko installed in the women's quarters of Edo Castle as his newest concubine.
She is immediately made uncomfortable by another concubine, Oden (Eiko Koike), who has an advantage over the others because she has borne the shogun two children, one of whom is a boy.
Oden feels threatened by Yasuko, and so is the shogun's wife, Nobuko (Norika Fujiwara). Though Nobuko has no children and has more to fear from Oden, she joins forces with her to keep Yasuko in her place.
