Leon Lai News Today ~ 25/06/05
Leon recently visited the needy children in East Timor as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In the 6-day trip, Leon saw the poverty-stricken situation of the local children and experienced the adverse environment there. He said, "As the water supply is limited, therefore water would only be supplied for a limited time everyday, but you do not know when it would stop. My make-up artist experienced one day that the water suddenly stopped while he was bathing. I was more lucky and had bathed earlier that day, otherwise it would be very embarrassing."
As about half of the local residents do not have clean and safe drinking water, the children had to carry water from the river up the steep slopes back home everyday. Leon said, "I personally experienced carrying the water bucket and walked across the slopes, the feeling was certainly unpleasant."
Leon also visited a 12-year-old child, Jovel, and learnt that while he escaped from the war chaos 6 years ago, he had a high fever and could not obtain medical treatment in time, resulting in brain damage, loss of speaking ability and became handicapped for life. As Jovel's mother was old and weak, she could only push her son to the field outside their door. During Leon's visit, he pushed Jovel to the riverside to see the sun, which made him very happy.
Leon said, "As I've tried pushing the wheelchair before for filming, so I know how to control it and make sure that the person sitting on it is comfortable. Therefore, when I walked on the slopes, I turned the wheelchair in the opposite direction and pulled instead, then he would not feel scared."

LEON LAI BACK IN SWORDS-FIGHTING ACTION IN TSUI HARK'S SEVEN SWORDS
This summer, fans of Leon Lai can anticipate him in swords-fighting action and costumes in Seven Swords. It will be one of Leon Lai's best attempts to put up adrenalin-pumping swords-fighting action in a movie. Leon Lai plays the character Yang Yun-chong and holds the Transience Sword, the sword that can resist the sharpest weapon in the world and a defensive weapon of the highest precision.
Seven Swords also marks a comeback for director Tsui Hark, who's previous martial arts flick include Once Upon A Time In China and The Legend of Zu. Tsui Hark has long been a martial arts fan. The fundamental quintessence of martial arts, he felt, lies in the spirit of the sword. "The sword is the 'King' of the martial arts weapon. It is very unique, romantic yet elegant. Its uniqueness lies when it strikes its opponents or defends itself from its enemies. Moreover, there is always a beautiful relationship between the sword fighter and the sword. Hence, my biggest challenge is to show this unique essence of the Seven Swords on the big screen."
The film was predominantly shot in the Xin Jiang Province in China. Tsui Hark felt that Xin Jiang has a long history of martial arts legend. The beautiful austere scenery plus the folklore is good enough a reason to shoot the film there. Seven Swords tells its story by its lyrical storytelling, sleek choreographed kungfu sequence. The artistes have to undergo a period of grueling kungfu practice supervised by the movie's martial arts director Lau Kar-leung, who also plays one of the 'swords' character. Apart from the freezing weather and bruises caused from the shoot, the artistes also has to tolerate with respiratory difficulties as part of the location shoot is situated at a altitude of 40,000 feet above sea level.
Seven Swords has completed filming in Xinjiang, China on 17 December 2004, and is currently into post-production works. The movie is slatted for release on 29 July 2005. |

Hong Kong star Leon Lai in awe of director Tsui Hark after filming 'Seven Swords'
Hong Kong actor-singer Leon Lai says he's in awe of Tsui Hark after filming the upcoming martial arts film "Seven Swords" with the famed director.
"Now I know what it's like to be fully passionate, have energy and be really serious in making a movie," Lai told reporters Monday.
Lai praised Tsui's skill in steering a film with multiple characters.
"When there are so many characters, the leader is important," Lai said. "He did a good job of taking care of our spirits and other aspects."
"Seven Swords" is about seven kung fu masters who try to evade a ban on martial arts in ancient China. It was filmed in the remote western Chinese province of Xingjiang.
The picture also stars Donnie Yen and South Korean actress Kim So-yeun.
Tsui, dubbed the "Steven Spielberg of Asia," is a versatile director whose work has ranged from comedy to martial arts. He is known to be an exacting filmmaker.
Lai recalled that Tsui asked the cast to walk with their swords up a mountain instead of riding in a car.
"He'd say, you can only do a good job if you get used to living in this environment," Lai said.
"He's keen on putting himself completely in the world of the movie," he said.

To make it more realistic, the seven swords in the film were all made with pure metal and each weighs 10 pounds. How did Tsui Hark handled the ending battle between Leon's "The Transience" sword and Donnie Yen's "The Dragon" sword, where they spent 2 weeks filming on the snow mountain?
Tsui Hark smiled and said, "Watch the movie. You'll know when you watch the movie. Leon had to use both hands to hold the sword, use all his strength, bite his teeth to fight with Donnie Yen, and film until he call for help. But he is really very professional and there isn't one word of complaint from him."
Many people said that Leon's acting is average and expressionless, Tsui Hark immediately rebutted for Leon, "Leon's performance in 'Seven Swords' is very good. He fully met my expectation. The style of the movie is more realistic, so the actors would not have too exaggerated expressions. I have watched many movies which I could not stand because the actors acted like they are on the stage. I feel that some films do not need to be so exaggerated. For example, there are many ways of expressing happiness. It's not that you must make your mouth wide open and do an exaggerated expression then it's called happiness." |
