Synopsis:
FujiTV is now trying to regain its reputation as a hit drama production house especially after seeing its rivals churn out hit after hit. In NTV's case, it has not been doing well in the drama arena but in the last 5 years, it had produced dramas like Gokusen and Jyoou no Kyo****su which do well in terms of ratings and critical reviews. Even TBS has managed to make hit movies like Sekai no Chuushin de Ai wo Sakebu and Ima Ai ni Yukimasu which were subsequently adapted as dramas in addition to popular works like Dragonzakura.
In order to change the situation, FujiTV is pining its hopes on the winter 2006 gekku drama, "Saiyuki" starring SMAP's Katori Shingo. The slot concerned was usually meant for romance dramas so they are taking a gamble to turn the tide around. The supporting cast is also carefully selected with Fukatsu Eri as Tripitaka, Uchimura Teruyoshi as Sha Wu Jing and Ito Atsushi as Zhu Bajie. Last but not least, other SMAP members will also appear as special guests in the order of Inagaki Goro, Kusanagi Tsuyoshi, Nakai Masahiro and Kimura Takuya.

Synopsis:
Based on the popular comic of the same name by Ryo Koshino. Satomi Ishihara will be starring in the Fuji TV winter 2006 drama, "Ns' Aoi (Nurse Aoi)" beginning on 10 January. The story is based on the same-titled manga on a newbie nurse, Aoi Mizora and the problems she encounters in medical work.
Ishihara plays Aoi who has been a nurse for 3 years but she gets transferred to a community hospital due to some problems she caused at a major hospital. This will be her first leading role and she plays a working adult for the first time too.
NEWS member Keiichiro Koyama will also be acting in the drama for the first time in his career. He plays Takeshi Kitazawa, a part-time nursing assistant who actually aspires to be a pro-musician. As such, he does not feel any passion for his job. However, as he sees how Aoi tries to change the unsatisfactory conditions in the hospital, this results in a change of his mentality towards nursing. He will also be romantically linked to Aoi in the story.
When Koyama knew that he was offered the role, he went to buy a full set of the manga so as to prepare for the filming. He commented that he had been yearning to act in a drama since last year and was thrilled at the opportunity given to him. As he is playing a nursing assistant in the drama, he went to his Johnny's Jimusho senior, TOKIO's Masahiro Matsuoka for advice as the latter had played a nurse before in the NTV drama, "Nurseman".

Synopsis:
Ryoko Shinohara stars as a female detective with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police First Section who holds the record for the most number of arrests. The winter drama starts on 10 January via Fuji TV entitled "Unfair" where she plays a police detective who is regarded as the No.1 in her unit. The story is based on a suspense/detective novel published in December last year written by Takehiko Hata who also wrote scripts for dramas like Dragonzakura.
Shinohara plays the heroine Natsumi Yukihira who is divorced and has a daughter. However, she is unable to see her child as her ex-husband cum superior has taken her away and does not allow Yukihira to see her. At the same time, she is also investigating a series of murder cases which follows the plot of a suspense novel. In order to crack the case, Yukihira uses all sorts of methods which may be seen as unfair to others. As for her character, she loves to drink and sleep in the nude. Despite this, she is secretly nursing the pain of not being able to see her daughter.
Eita plays the newbie detective, Ando who forms a team with Yukihira. |

Synopsis:
Takayuki Yamada and Haruka Ayase will be working again in the TBS winter drama, "Byakuyakou" to be shown on Thursdays at 9 pm ever since their last collaboration in TBS drama, "Sekai no Chuushin de, Ai wo Sakebu". The story is adapted from a mystery novel by Keigo Higashino and they would play lovers again in this story spanning 14 years.
Yamada plays Ryoji who finds out that his first love, Yukiho is sleeping with his father for money and kills his father in order to protect her. On the other hand, Yukiho who was forced to prostitute herself under the orders of her mother, also retaliates in the same manner. As a result of this, Yukiho suffers serious injuries. In order to protect Yukiho and improve her life, Ryoji decides to enter the world of vice and dabbles in crimes so as to support Yukiho.
According to the producer, it took about 6 months for them to persuade the author to agree to this drama adaptation from the novel which has sold 550,000 copies since its release in 1999.

Synopsis:
Ryoko Yonekura will be acting in the 2006 winter drama, "Kemonomichi" to be shown from January 2006 on Thursdays at 9 pm. The story is adapted from a novel by Seicho Matsumoto where Yonekura plays a woman who kills her husband and becomes a lover of an influential person in the political-financial arena. The novel was first published in 1964 and has sold 1.17 million copies to date. In 1982, NHK had produced a drama version of it starring Yuko Natori.
Yonekura plays Tamiko Narusawa who has a handicapped husband and she has to take care of him while working at a ryokan. However, she has hopes of being a jewellery designer but her circumstances prevent her from achieving her dreams. One day, she meets a guy by the name of Otaki who says that they can be great partners and suggests how she can change her life. Tamiko then sets fire to her house thus killing her husband. She then becomes a lover of an influential figure in the political-financial arena at Otaki's introduction where the duo try to achieve their aims.

Toshiaki Karasawa will be starring in the Fuji TV winter 2006 drama, "Kobayakawa Nobuki no Koi (The Love of Kobayakawa Nobuki)" to be shown on Thursdays at 10 pm. The story is based on the manga by Fumi Shibata (well-known for love stories/shoujo manga) and Karasawa plays a surgeon who is entirely different from the role he played in Shiroi Kyoto (The Great White Tower) 2 years ago. In this new drama, his character Nobuki Kobayakawa is a skillful surgeon who is honest and hates conflicts. As such, he shows no interest in promotions but still gets embroiled in the battle of the professors' election. In addition, he is caught in a love triangle as he falls in love with a woman he met through a bonsai class and does not know how to choose between her and his wife.
The manga has released 3 volumes to date and the main character looks similar to Karasawa himself. It is very popular among working adults as it talks about the problems between married couples and problems at work facing men. |

Synopsis:
TOKIO's Masahiro Matsuoka will be starring in the TBS winter 2006 drama, "Yaoh" on Fridays at 10 pm. He had acted in the same-titled 2-hour SP in May this year and will take on the same role, Ryoji Matoba in the full length drama. The story is based on a manga series in Young Jump which has sold 1 million copies to date and there are 10 volumes published so far.
Ryoji Matoba is an ex-gangster who enters the world of hosts and the story depicts his journey to be the No.1 in the club. After the SP was shown, TBS received lots of requests from viewers who wanted to see what happened to Ryosuke after that so the decision was made to produce a full drama. Thus, the setting of the drama will begin from when the SP ended. For each episode, a guest actress will appear as the customer in the host club.
Jikou Keisatsu (Time Limit Detective) - beginning 13 January 2006 (Fridays, 11.15 pm)

Joe Odagiri will be starring in the TV Asahi winter 2006 drama, "Jikou Keisatsu" beginning in January where he plays a police detective who investigates unresolved cases past the legal time frame. This is the first time in 2 years 3 months that he is acting in a drama since his last appearance in "Beginner". Odagiri has been more active in movies of late as he has appeared in 7 movies this year to date.
Odagiri plays Shuichiro Kiriyama who works as an information management officer in the prefectural police station. As he is very observant and has interest in the unresolved cases which have gone past the legal time frame i.e. the culprit cannot be charged even if he/she is caught, he investigates the cases without permission with the aim of "confirming" the culprit only. Some charateristics of this character would be his dark green spectacles, his wallet containing 20,000 yen at all times and he likes udon and nyuumen.
In the recent wave of adapted dramas, this story is an original script where they wish to explore the lives of criminals who can no longer be prosecuted by the law. Filming begins in December.

Noriyuki Higashiyama will be acting in the NTV winter 2006 drama, "Kuitan (Eating Detective)" to be shown from January on Saturdays at 9 pm. This story about a detective who has a huge appetite is adapted from a manga by Daisuke Terasawa and will be Higashiyama' first drama in 4 years.
The manga is serialised in the comic magazine Evening published by Kodansha and there are 4 volumes released to date. The detective in this manga can eat under any circumstances and has a record of eating 10 bowls of ramen at one go. Higashiyama himself has maintained a weight of about 60 kg since he was 17 years old and participated in a triathlon held at Honolulu where he got 53rd out of 105 participants. However, he has to gorge himself with food in this drama which is quite unlike his usual image. Nevertheless, he found the role very interesting and agreed to the offer quickly. |

South Korean actress Choi Ji Woo will be acting in TBS winter 2006 drama, "Rondo" with Yutaka Takenouchi beginning January. As compared to her usual roles in Korean dramas where she cries a lot, she will play a strong-character woman, Yuna who owns a Korean restaurant and meets the Japanese police detective, Sho played by Takenouchi where the two of them fall in love with each other. Choi came to Japan in mid-November when filming commences and will stay until the end of March.

NEWS members Yuya Tegoshi and Takahisa Masuda will also be acting in the TBS winter 2006 drama. Tegoshi plays a swimmer who was aiming for the Olympics but has to give up his dream due to an injury. Masuda plays a cheerful guy at school but due to his family background, he is actually someone who is lonely deep down. |
