A DECISION to tinker with Malaysia’s doubles line-up against Denmark yesterday backfired big time.
But chief coach Tan Kim Her believes he did the right thing.
Yesterday, both Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How and Koo Kien Keat-Goh V Shem failed miserably to turn the tables on Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen and scratch pair Jonas Rasmussen-Joachim Fischer Nielsen.
If only one of the pairs had won, Malaysia would have reached the quarter-finals as Group C champions. Two singles players – Liew Daren and Mohd Hafiz Hashim – won their matches to make up for the loss of Lee Chong Wei under painful circumstances, having to concede a walkover to Peter-Gade Christensen due to an ankle injury.
Actualy, Malaysia blundered even before the start of competition when they listed Kien Keat-V-Shem as the top pair ahead of Boon Heong-Thien How. The referee overturned the request because the combination of Thien How-Boon Heong are placed higher than Kien Keat-V Shem under the national rankings.
Kim Her defended his move as being “the right one for the occasion”.
“Our first pair gave their best but the Danish combination was more experienced. Our service return let us down,” said Kim Her.
“Kien Keat-V Shem also tried their best but Denmark’s second pair surprised us with a good performance.
“We decided to scratch the pairs so that we would have an equal chance in both the first and second doubles. Unfortunately, things did not go our way.
“We took a gamble ... sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.”
Asked if Malaysia would field the same line-up if they were to meet Denmark again, Kim Her said they would have given it more thought.
“We will discuss the matter and I will get feedbacks from the players. I will split them up again if necessary,” he said.
The 22-year-old V Shem, who was the target of his opponents yesterday, admitted that he failed to hit it off with Kien Keat.
“I was not nervous or scared of our opponents.
“I was more concerned with getting my act right with Koo. I could not complement him well and it was a distraction,” said V Shem.
~ OK skrg aku paham dah apa kim her nak buat .... dia nak letak boon heong/thien how sebagai 2nd MD sebenarnye .... kalau camni sebenarnye malaysia ada can menang 2nd MD .... tapi kena reject ngan umpire sbb notional ranking boon heong/thien how lebih tinggi dari kkk/v shem ..... yg peliknye apasal kim her tak kira dulu notional ranking scratch pairs ni dulu .....
notional ranking tu kiraan tuk pair yg takde ranking .... scratch pairs kan dibuat utk team event je ... dorang tak biasa main tuk tournament lain jadi dorang takde ranking .... kiraan dia camni
