Charts: Ayu, Perfume
In this week's Oricon ranking news, Ayumi Hamasaki's tenth original full album, "NEXT LEVEL," topped the charts with almost 241,000 copies sold in its first week of release. Ever since the release of Ayu's first album "A Song for XX" in 1999, she has put out a #1 album for 11 consecutive years, which extends her record as a female artist.
Following Ayu's album is Korean group TVXQ's "The Secret Code," selling 158,000 copies. This is their second consecutive Top 10 album. Also in the top ten this week were two compilations from Kumi Koda, ranking at #6 and #7.
On the singles chart, Perfume's newest single, "One Room Disco," gained the top spot with 77,000 in sales, giving them their second #1 single. They were followed by Gackt and the GazettE, while DJ OZMA's unit Yajima Biyoshitsu achieved #5 with their second release.
Former Hello! Project member Mari Yaguchi also reached the top ten at #6 with her single "Seishun Boku," coupled with AIR BAND's "Seishun Ore." Rock band 10-FEET ranked #10 with their latest single.
And for the second week in a row, Hikaru Utada's "This Is The One" held the top spot on the foreign albums chart.

Show business organizers have started taking measures to deal with the surge in swine flu cases in Japan over the last couple of days. With the flu seemingly arriving in Japan with school kids who've been studying in North America, schools have been closed in the Kansai area where the cases have been concentrated. J-pop concerts and other events where teenagers would gather in large numbers are also an obvious risk. One of the biggest record labels, Avex Group Holdings, said they would ask concertgoers to disinfect their hands at venues this week. They will also provide iodine mouthwash in toilets and provide face masks for anyone seen to be coughing or sneezing. Avex have upcoming concerts by several major artists: Hamasaki Ayumi (May 20/21) and Otsuka Ai (May 23/24) at Osaka Castle Hall, and Koda Kumi at the Kobe World Kinen Hall (May 23/24). The Kobe venue is also scheduled to host Dreams Come True and Mr. Children this month. Another high profile organization, Johnny's Jimusho, announced that they would be postponing concerts in the Kansai region. The group Kansai Johnnys Jr. were scheduled to play four shows over two days at the Umeda Geijitsu Gekijo theater in Osaka on May 23-24, but the shows have been indefinitely postponed. Johnny's say they will notify the 7,600 ticket holders when new dates are decided. Actress Fujiwara Norika was scheduled to attend a Red Cross event at her old high school in Kobe tomorrow, but it has been canceled.

Ayu didn't obtain permission for April PR event
Fri, May 22, 2009 (4:21am EDT)
Police are currently investigating a publicity event held last month by pop star Ayumi Hamasaki. She made surprise appearances in Shibuya to promote the release of her new book and new album, and it appears that her manager did not obtain the necessary permit for the event. Now, the case seems to be headed to the prosecutor's office.
The PR event happened on April 7, at the front of the 109 building in Shibuya. Roughly 8,000 people gathered to see Hamasaki, resulting in temporarily blocked roads. Before her appearance at 109, she also paid unexpected visits to a few major record shops, going from store to store by car while some fans followed her on foot.
Even though the events officially took place in stores, police determined that the scope of the event required a permit for the use of the roads. Because a permit was never obtained, authorities revealed on Thursday that they plan to send the matter to the prosecutor's office in order to further question the manager and Hamasaki herself.
Singer Hiromi Go, attending his own event in Tokyo on Thursday, offered a sympathetic comment about the case. Ten years ago, he was similarly prosecuted for holding an unannounced performance in Shibuya.

Ayumi Hamasaki's first drama theme in 6 years
Tue, June 30, 2009 (3:54am EDT)
The next single from pop star Ayumi Hamasaki, titled "Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~," will be the theme song for the TV Asahi drama series "Dandy Daddy?" Hamasaki has not done a drama theme song since "forgiveness" was used in TBS's "Kougen e Irasshai" in 2003.
Starring Hiroshi Tachi and Nao Minamisawa in a father-daughter comedy, "Dandy Daddy?" is scheduled to premiere on July 9.
Hamasaki's "Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~" will be released as a double A-side single called "Sunrise / Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~" on August 12. Included on the single is a "Special Mega-Mash-Up-Mix" that combines the singer's past summer hits "July 1st," "Greatful days," "fairyland," "BLUE BIRD," and "glitter."
In addition to the regular CD single, a CD+DVD edition will be available that includes music videos for the two title tracks and a making-of video for "Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~."

Ayumi represents Rimmel in Asia
Tue, July 28, 2009 (3:59am EDT)
Pop star Ayumi Hamasaki (30) has been chosen to represent popular London-based cosmetics brand Rimmel, joining Kate Moss, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and Lily Cole. Ayumi will be the brand's first "image character" in Asia.
Founded in 1834, Rimmel's products are now readily available in 56 countries around the globe. By appointing Ayumi as the brand's newest face, Rimmel hopes that her beauty and popularity can help capture more of the Asian market. She is already a fashion leader in Japan and has served as a model for other major brands.
Starting in early August, the singer will begin appearing in advertisements throughout Asia. In particular, the initial ads will use Ayumi's attention-catching eyes to promote the eye color product "Sparkling Gradation Eyes," set to go on sale in Japan on August 7.
"I've never been to England, so I'd like to use this an opportunity to go there," Ayumi said.
